(First things first: Thank you in advance for your time. I'm thrilled that you stopped by and I hope that after after reading about DISTRICT 7, you'll want to become a sponsor [a fundamental part] of this project.)
WELCOME to THE DISTRICT:
I'm producing a one-night show highlighting the work of 12 artists from the Jackson/Ann Arbor/Flint, Michigan area. These artists are producing innovative and exciting work and the exhibit (entitled "DISTRICT 7") will expose the public to their collective talents. An amazing venue has been secured for the event - one that represents the industrial nature of Jackson, MI (where the show will be held) and celebrates the grit and edge true to street art. The space is 6k square feet and will be filled with sound from underground DJs, spinning house/dubstep/jungle and hip-hop.
In an area greatly affected by the struggling economy, DISTRICT 7 is out to prove that its residents can triumph, thrive and produce beautiful sounds and images in the face of adversity.
I moved to Jackson, Michigan from a Detroit suburb about a year ago. With the move came a lot of adjustment beyond just changing my address - since I'd already left my old job behind, it finally made sense to follow my passion and pursue painting full-time. Fast forward four months and I'd completed almost a dozen 3x4' - 5x5' canvases. I had already begun contemplating finding a gallery that would be interested in showing my pieces as a culmination of my months of work, but… where were the places to show? After visiting galleries and showrooms, nothing felt like it fit.
I began brainstorming my version of a "perfect event": what it looks like, what it sounds like, what the vibe is. And if the goal is to expose the public to new work, I want to do it on a larger scale - and I want the work to not just be my own. So, I posted ads and I asked for submissions of artwork and the work I received BLEW ME AWAY.
Suddenly, I was curating a show.
I recruited a small army of ex-colleagues, professors, working artists and friends to use as mentors. I talked to my PR contacts about writing press releases, promoters about marketing techniques, attorneys about required permits, print shop owners about print collateral, electricians about wiring requirements… I could fill page after page with the questions I posed, the advice I asked for, the favors I called in and the kindness, time and patience shown to me.
Cutting-edge art lives HERE.
This is where we introduce the community to our sound.
This is when we band together to create something new.
DISTRICT 7: This is where we LIVE.
Please check our Facebook page for updates and info! We'll be unveiling one D7 artist/DJ name + bio every few days from February 6 until the week before the event.
