Airpaq upcycles airbags and seat belts into backpacks. These materials are designed to perform in extreme situations, making Airpaq a sustainable and quality product. By collecting materials from different car models/brands/years we encounter a huge variety of materials, which make each Airpaq through little details unique.
Airpaq finds a great balance between functionality and style, making it the ideal companion for urban adventures. The body of Airpaq is available in four colors (black, blue, red and yellow). The rolltop is always left in its original airbag-white. The lining of the Airpaq changes with your color choice and offers a beautiful and exciting contrast. One key aspect of the Airpaq’s design is its individuality, resulting from the wide variety of slightly differing airbags, seat belts and buckles found in cars. Our backpacks have for this reason always some details like buckle shape, bar-codes, textil pattern etc. that are not found on any other Airpaq in this combination - making them truly unique.
The recycled materials used to produce one Airpaq are approximately two airbags, for seat belts and one buckle. Both, the colored body and the white rolltop are made from airbags. An old car's buckle serves as closing mechanism and seat belts are reused for the straps and the back. The material map below visually shows which part of Airpaq is made from which materials. // Ein Airpaq besteht aus circa zwei Airbags, vier Sicherheitsgurten und einem Gurtschloss.
- If we manage to unlock the 70 000 € mark we will incorporate an extra quick-access zipper-pocket into the upper interior of the rolltop. This pocket will have room for smaller items that you want to access quickly, however prefer to store on the interior side of the backpack (Keys, cards, money).
- If we manage to unlock the 80 000 € mark we will have a high enough quantity to add 'Green' as a 5th color choice. Check out the picture of a green prototype below, it also looks awesome!
If you are excited about Airpaq and our stretch goals, you can help making them happen by sharing our campaign on your Facebook page and by telling your friends/coworkers about Airpaq and our campaign!

We are Adrian and Michael, two good friends from different backgrounds with one shared vision: We are passionate about the idea of creating alternative uses for things that otherwise would end up in the trash. Our passion stems from two motives. First, we are convinced that sustainable actions such as upcycling/recycling are essential for our life on this planet. Second, we are fascinated by the charm and the singularity that products of upcycled nature exhibit. Our goal for Airpaq is to combine these motives by creating products that convince our customers ethically, ecologically and aesthetically.
Everything started as a small student project in September 2015. To gather inspiration for an assignment we visited a scrapyard and stumbled over airbags and seat belts. Still the same night, the very first prototype was created and the idea of Airpaq was born. Since then we did not spend any day without working on Airpaq.
Sharing our story and the values of Airpaq with the world is something that means a lot to us. We hope that we have created something that people will appreciate, because for us it is much more than just a backpack.
We are confident that we can deliver all Airpaq rewards latest by November 2017! // Wir sind uns sicher bis spätestens November 2017 ausliefern zu können.
*For international shipments outside the EU please be aware that covering possible import, duty, VAT, and customs charges will be the buyers responsibility. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause!
Risks and challenges
Making Airpaq reality is what we have been working on for almost two years. We know what difficulties our venture may face, and we have prepared thoroughly to minimise the most likely risks and challenges before they occur.
After a successful campaign, there is much left to do. The most important tasks for us are the following:
Getting our Material (supply chain)
Producing our backpacks
Delivering our products
Meeting your expectations
Supply Chain: To get our material we do not leave anything to chance. We already started collecting material and building a stock. Currently we are cooperating with 10 scrapyards, so the risk on this end is diversified. Furthermore we are in contact with a supplier of automotive security systems. This contact may enable us to substitute some of our scrapyard material with the supplier's production waste. This will enable us to keep on producing, even when the demand on Kickstarter skyrockets.
Production: In total we have already spent probably more than six month at our production site, developing the processes, the product and the network necessary to get things done. We have produced a first batch of more than 100 backpacks and it worked out just perfect. So in terms of technical/production related issues we face almost no risk. Also in terms of production quantity we are very flexibel. We chose our production period (August/September) in the low season of our partner. This means that there is much idle production capacity at our partners site, giving us the opportunity to increase our quantity on short notice.
Delivering the product: With a functioning supply chain and production we have set a good foundation of managing to deliver the product to you within the planned schedule. Your order will be handled by UPS or DHL up to entry of your country. Once your order enters your country your order will be handed off to your local post office for final delivery. So as long as you don’t want us to ship to the Mt. Everest summit, we should be able to send you an Airpaq.
Meeting your expectations: We believe that we have done everything we can to create a product that meets or exceeds your expectations. In fact, the first batch of Airpaqs we produced helped us not only to test our production but also to have Airpaq itself tested. A group of over 40 people is currently using Airpaq on a daily basis, to give us valuable and hands on feedback on how Airpaq performs on their everyday life. The input we receive from this group is used to make further improvements and to detect possible teething troubles.
We have done much to minimise and control our risks. Nevertheless, when engaging in a project like Airpaq it is impossible to plan for everything. We therefore want to promise you that we will do everything we can (also if it involves much coffee and little sleep) to deliver on our promises. Why? Because it is our dream to make Airpaq reality and we have been working long and hard to get to where we are today. If we have learned anything in the development phase of Airpaq then it was solving problems.. so don’t worry, we are very committed and will work through any and all challenges that come our way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
