About this project
In this Kickstarter we offer two ways of hacking your running stride and speed. The Airia BioSpeed Insole is an easy way to make your favorite pair of running shoes faster. And the Airia RAW speed hacked racing flat. Both products are fantastic for beating of personal bests and become faster.
Kickstarter is an all or nothing platform. If the campaign doesn´t succeed in raising 650.000 SEK (about 75.000 USD), then nothing of this will happen. Fund us, help us spread the word and eventually become a faster and more efficient runner.
We are very proud to present this new and unique product that makes the BioSpeed concept accessible for all runners, without switching from your favourite running shoes of choice.
The Airia BioSpeed Insole is made of two different high rebound polyurethane foams with different thicknesses and different density. The thicker and more dense foam is located in the lateral, outer panel, creating a functional drop towards the medial side of the foot. The drop guides the foot during the ground contact phase of the stride, from stance to toe-off.
The faster rolling of the foot through the stance reduces ground contact time and increases the force of the foot propulsion. Two important factors that give small but significant gains in running efficiency and speed. Please refer to other sections of this case for more in-depth presentation of the BioSpeed concept.

After 10 years of R&D, our team at Airia has developed a new recipe for creating the fastest possible road racing shoe. The result is a trimmed, light weight shoe with exceptional performance, proving its efficiency in all tests conducted. A no- compromise shoe for a raw speed, record-breaking 5 or 10K.
Over the years our design team has refined the Airia Raw, based on four fundamentals scientifically proven to affect running performance. We reduced the weight, increased sole rebound, shaped the outsole to guide the stride, and last but not least, made them feel great on the run.
The shoe combines these four fundamentals in a unique way, and gives you a real edge to smash personal bests or break records.
Speed and quality are important for runners, but style and colors have their place too. That's why we will make the Airia Raw in two colors, to begin with. As we raise more funds we will make more colors available.

Weight is an extremely important aspect of the performance of running shoes. From scientific studies and our own tests, we've seen that 100 grams per shoe in weight reduction equals at least a 1 % performance enhancement.
The weight reduction can be done in two ways; either by using materials with less density or by using less material. In the upper of the Airia Raw we went both ways. First, we selected the absolute lightest materials we could find. Then we stripped the upper of any unnecessary weight. We chose to go with a single layer mesh with a very low weight per unit area and then worked hard to eliminate all non-essential mass. The Airia Raw upper ended up a beautifully clean and efficient, no seam construction influenced by our Nordic design heritage.
The outsole was another challenge, since sole materials with the desired rebound properties are heavier. Rebound was the most important priority next to low weight, so we had to work around the slight weight increase. We gradually trimmed and removed material from the sole and ended up with two breakthrough solutions, removing the superficial rubber layer and removing sole material from under the arch of the foot. From our field tests we learned that the chosen high rebound sole didn´t wear faster than the upper, eliminating the need for protective rubber. Reducing the material under the arch didn´t affect the other properties of the shoe, as this area simply is the least important in racing products.
As a result, we achieved lightweight shoes paired with high rebound outsoles; a unique combination.
Final choice of rebound sole material
Increased sole rebound results in three major shoe advantages; minimal loss of foot impact energy, better responsiveness, and a more comfortable shoe. That’s why we spent so much time searching for the material with the best rebound per weight ratio. M-Bound was our final choice. It is a wonderfully soft and responsive polyurethane (PU) foam.
The bonus is that M-bound is fairly durable compared to our other materials of choice. That helped us decide to remove the heavy superficial rubber to save extra weight from the sole construction. Since the rubber also stiffens the sole, reducing the comfort of a soft and bouncy midsole, eliminating the rubber also resulted in a shoe with less weight and better comfort.
The fact that increased comfort has been shown to enhance performance in running shoes is not so surprising. But the quest for comfort can compromise the other performance-enhancing factors. Manufacturers resort to adding more cushioning material for better comfort, resulting in increased weight and decreased responsiveness.
Our development and design work is a delicate process, balancing the different desired properties of the shoe into a series of prototypes. Then we take the prototypes through a trial procedure with lab tests and test runner field testing. From our previous models we've learnt to value the comfort aspect more and set out to build a forgiving shoe without compromising the other performance fundamentals.
The Airia Raw has proven to be a really good combination of design and materials that balance the performance-enhancing properties with the need for comfort, as illustrated by the valuation from our test runners:
We asked 10 runners to tell us what they feel about the comfort of Airia Raw. The results were unprecedented: 84 % feeling of comfort, 89 % fit, 86 % run feeling and a whooping 90 % on lightness.
That’s why we did not make any compromises on the inside of the shoe even though we could have shaved a few grams by sacrificing our superior comfort. The forefoot has room for the toes without losing the ability to carefully lock the foot in an optimal position.
The insole is made of the light Aureright® material. We choose it because of the lightweight and comfortable feeling it gives. The holes in the material helps to keep your feet dry and also minimizes the weight. It is also soft and follows the the pressure of the foot, giving support where needed.
Airia was originally founded on a series of inventions from Swedish inventor Svante Berggren, based on decades of research on mechanisms to improve the biomechanical running patterns. The most prominent - the inwards slanted forefoot sole - has become our cornerstone in performance enhancement and has been shown to increase running speed and running efficiency in various kinds of tests.
Biospeed works from a change in the geometry of the outsole. A thinner inward side of the outsole guides the natural rolling of the foot during the ground contact phase of the stride - from impact to kickoff in less time with a more powerful propulsion from the medial side of the foot. The measurable differences have been shown to be a decrease in ground contact time and a higher cadence, resulting in a more energy efficient and/or faster running.
The Airia concept works by making the sole thinner on the inward side of the foot compared to the outward side of the sole. You always land on the outward side of the foot but take off is started when the body leans on the inward side of the foot. The concept of removing material on the inward side of the sole helps the foot move from landing to takeoff in less time. This also creates a more forceful takeoff which helps to raise foot higher and flex the knee more. This movement reduces the energy cost of moving the leg and foot forward into the next stride.
Proofs Of Airia BioSpeed
In the course of Airia’s brief history we have done several tests and studies to challenge the BioSpeed Concept. We are never satisfied, and are always looking for things to improve or rethink.
5K Time Trials
However you put it, the best test of the performance of a running shoe is to race in them. That's why we initially used 5K time trials to compare performance between shoes. We had 10 runners do two max 5K runs with different shoes; one Airia prototype and one reference shoe. We then compared the results between the different shoes on the group level. We have done tons of these tests to find the exact right characteristics for the Airia BioSpeed sole optimization. This work still continues to deliver better and better properties from our products.
MotionMetrix is a Swedish system for realtime, markerless 3D scanning of runners. The system calculates the mechanical energy the runners use to move at a certain speed. We took the system to the Berlin Marathon to test it out. The results were amazing. Of 70 test runners doing one run in a shoe based on the Airia BioSpeed and one run in their ordinary shoe, they spent almost 2 % less energy when running in the Airia shoes.
When doing a small sample study on the Airia Raw we observed test runners with up to 5% superior energy efficiency compared to other racing flats. The average improvement for the whole group was about 1%.
The latest study is still in the making. From early R&D we learned that the Airia BioSpeed seemingly gives a lower heart rate response when running on a treadmill on same speed compared to running with comparable shoes from other brands. That is what we are currently investigating through a crowdsourced project hosted at www.saveheartbeats.run. A smaller study on the Airia Raw racing flat shows reductions of heart rate responses with up to 5% on 30 minutes of running, with an average decrease for the whole group (10 test runners) of about 1%.
The Airia Raw racing flat is a stripped shoe. Everything we could remove has been removed. Even the customary rubber has been stripped. This allows for a shoe with excellent performance while keeping comfort intact. But there is a price. The shoe won’t last the 1500 K you would expect from most running shoes. The Airia Raw racing flats are primarily made for running speed, not durability.
Airia running shoes run in true size, that is, if you usually wear US10 in running shoes, then Airia Raw US10 will fit you perfectly. A good sample shoe to compare the Airia size with is Nike Free.

Risks and challenges
We believe there are few risks with this project. We have the production sample made, all we need to do is to grade the shoe for different sizes and start with construction molds and tools for serial production. This is not the first time we have done this, and the factory we work with does this several times a month. Since we sell products globally and online, we have all the necessary partners to deliver products in a timely fashion. We work with Shipwire, which has 9 logistic centers in Asia, North America, Europe and the Pacific.
