Words & Pictures is an up-and-coming print shop focused on screen printing and DIY publishing. Our mission is to support small scale publishing by providing access to affordable printing and design tools, educational workshops, artists studios, and a community meeting space and zine library. Though our efforts we aim to build a thriving community of cartoonists, zinesters, print makers, bookbinders, publishers, writers, and DIYers!
To help bring this idea to life, we have partnered with Essex Hub's Main Street Studio, who helped us find our wonderful space. We are located at 14 Main St. Unit B, Essex Junction, VT, which is 20 min outside of Burlington and is accessible from the city by bus. Essex Junction is growing as a gathering place for creatives with several artist studios, galleries, and art events already making the town their home.
Why is a community print shop important to have in the state of Vermont?
Words & Pictures was created by a group of cartoonists to meet our needs for studio space and specialized printing and publishing. Thanks to the many comics arts organizations in the state (The Center for Cartoon Studies, Vermont Comic Creators Group, The Ladybroad Ledger) and the number of notable cartoonists living here, Vermont is a cartoonist magnet. As a result, many of us are in great need for a place like this to support our work. However, the print shop will serve a broad audience well beyond cartoonists.
We seek to provide low-cost access to graphic arts and DIY publishing tools—everything from design software and digital printing to silk screening and book binding. While we absolutely value the affordability and accessibility of digital-only publishing, we also believe it’s vital to support the creation of tangible print media in the digital age. Words & Pictures will serve as a hub to inspire community members to create their own comics, prints, zines, chapbooks, t-shirts, banners...whatever graphic expression moves them! Our zine library will give our community access to a cross-section of existing self-published works to provide technical insight and creative inspiration. Our meeting space will host workshops, gatherings, writing crit groups and comic meetups.
In the beginning of February, we moved into our space and began working to fill it up with a variety of printing & book binding equipment. We've recently hit a point where we need funding to purchase the remaining equipment that will allow us to begin taking memberships and run workshops!
Our immediate goal is to get our print shop fully set up for screen printing, copying, and production. Our $6,000 goal covers plumbing for our new washout sink, fixing up our DIY exposure unit, building print and screen drying racks, buying computers and software, and all the little odds and ends that will make our print shop look and feel functional.
The rewards below were created by members of our VT comics community and all prints and t-shirts will be printed at Words & Pictures.
If this project is not funded in full by the end of the campaign, you will not be charged and Words & Pictures will not receive funds. Please share this campaign with people who might be interested in supporting the project! Thank you in advance!
Risks and challenges
If the crowdfunding is successful, we will be purchasing everything needed to get us running. If we do not meet our goal, we will continue piecing together our equipment until we get to a stable and functional place. We will likely need to shift our focus to filling studio spaces to make up for missed membership income and open the print shop to the community later down the road.
If fully funded, rewards will be collected or printed in-house at Words & Pictures, and will be packaged and shipped by us. I (Stephanie) have successfully run several crowdfunding campaigns the the past and have always shipped rewards in an organized and timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
