UnMosqued is a documentary film which aims to highlight the growing need for reform in many of the mosques found in America.

What is UnMosqued™?

UnMosqued is a documentary film which highlights the growing need for reform in many mosques throughout the United States. The goal is simply to create a conversation. This documentary can engage groups of people who have been disconnected from their local mosque and connect them with current administration by exploring the various reasons that have led to this sentiment. In order for the mosques to survive and thrive in the upcoming decades, they will need to be inclusive of younger leadership, more diverse and equitable in their service, fiscally transparent, and open to change. Individual communities will win when they can talk honestly and agree on the level of change they can support.

UnMosqued is the story of the mosque in North America. Through humble beginnings and struggle, Islam has taken root in the West. However, the current climate ruthlessly destroys irrelevant places. UnMosqued is a chance for us to rewrite the next chapters so that mosques become true lighthouses.

What is the budget for?

With the script done and 90% of the footage shot, we are ready to edit. We have over 50 hours of footage that is ready to be cut into a feature-length film. Your support will help turn a good documentary into an epic documentary. Seemingly small things such as animation, professional sound, and color correction make a huge difference. Those items costs money and take time. We want to complete this in 2013.

Please help us help hundreds of communities across the nation become more relevant. We love the mosques and with your help, we can help drive these overdue conversations.

Why UnMosqued?

Here are some reasons:

Does context matter? Maybe, but if you are a woman interested in learning about Islam and went to this mosque for the first time….

Who are we?

We are a team of 3:

Ahmed Eid, currently works for the Huffington Post and is a documentary film maker. Ahmed grew up in mosques around Northern New Jersey.

Marwa Aly, former Muslim Chaplain at Wesleyan University and Trinity College. Marwa grew up in the mosques in New York.

Atif Mahmud, currently a Change Management Consultant. Atif grew up in the mosques in Houston, TX.

What have we done in the past 9 months?

Since the release of our first teaser, we have traveled to 12 different states; documenting UnMosqued stories and visiting various mosques.

January

UnMosqued Inc. was born. We hired a lawyer, created a logo, and interviewed a few Imams and friends in the NJ/NY area.

February

We release our first teaser for UnMosqued, and almost overnight, it gets 43,000 views on YouTube. The message clearly resonated with thousands of viewers.

March

In March we planned out the rest of the year and visited both Texas and Boston.

April

In April we traveled to Maryland/Virginia. The NUR center in Maryland is an up and coming "Third Space", which we discuss at length in the film.

May

In May we visited many mosques in California.

 June

In June we went to Cincinnati, Ohio and to Dearborn / Detroit, Michigan.

 July

In July we transcribed all the interviews thus far and logged all of our footage. We developed script sections and started outlining the script.

August

In August it was Ramadan, so we took a small step back from shooting and started to focus on the ideas/themes in the film. We visited MakeSpace, a relatively new "Third Space" that is attracting many UnMosqued young people in the Washington DC area even though they have no physical space and are renting out a restaurant's banquet hall temporarily. Brings up the question: what is more important, a multi million dollar mosque expansion, or the community itself?

We were also invited to speak at ISNA on a panel. Reflection here by our very own Marwa Aly.

"Eighty percent of South Asian mosques and 70 percent of Arab mosques have a divider. Only 16 percent of women from those mosques attend Jumuah. On the other hand, 30 percent of African American mosques have a divider and 23 percent of women attend the Jumuah prayer regularly. There seems to be a correlation with the idea that if I’m not listening to a disembodied voice, then I’m more likely to attend, feel connected, and contribute to my local masjid." - Marwa Aly

With the script done, we are ready to go into editing. However, we need to work with animators and professional sound designers and color editors to bring the film to the next level. We have contacted a few of them and they have pre-committed, and are waiting on us to raise the funds.
