A haunting revelation of our final stretch goal...

And so we reveal the mysterious final stretch goal of $166,666, which is a complete rework of Asylum that will be distributed as an expansion. Whereas the original game is gritty, dark and oppressive, the additional content which we are dubbing Asylum: Memories will be dreamy, melancholic and *gasp* even beautiful. Fans of Scratches will feel right at home with its similar atmosphere of decaying beauty and sadness. I mean, look at these early screenshots:

Full version: Courtyard.

Full version: Solarium.

Full version: Chapel.

The expansion will have a completely different story and gameplay, so it’s fully independent from the original Asylum. While the first game takes place within one night, so it’s always dark and has a very distinct mood, the new story will have another protagonist delving into Hanwell in broad daylight: an urban explorer trying to realize what became of a long-lost family member who is called Michael (hint, hint). There will be an even stronger emphasis on past inmates, their individual stories, and scavenging, in addition to a whole new breathtaking mystery. It’s the ultimate Asylum ride: one gigantic virtual building, two drastically different ways to experience it.

Asylum: Memories would retail at $10, but we’re going to give it for free when available to every backer who pledged $15 and above. We’re estimating around 6-8 additional hours of gameplay, almost a brand new game, so that’s at least 20 hours combined with the original game. A bargain!

But it’s not about the hours, it’s the experience what we care for the most, so let me show you this quick video with the mood we have in mind:

The $166,666 stretch goal is enough to get us started building this ambitious expansion. Keep in mind its release date would be around mid-2014.

Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller

You guys were amazing this past weekend, rallying to support Days of Dawn like that. It’s safe to say that you played a huge role in saving that project! I’m going to ask you one more favor: our Kickstarter campaign couldn’t have made possible without the extraordinary help from our friends at Phoenix Online Studios. They have been working closely with us since the beginning of the year to make this happen. Unfortunately, their adventure game series Cognition is having a hard time on Steam Greenlight. This quality game should have been Greenlit already so, please, if you have a Steam account consider voting them because not only they make great games and are strong supporters of the adventure genre: they’re also really cool people. It’s just a quick vote!

Even More Kickstartering

Finally, here’s another Kickstarter project ending soon that has been supporting us: ZOMBIE HUNTER. Horror movie with zombies and Danny Trejo. Yum! It looks really cool, so make sure you check out their project page.

Thanks for the heads-up for Cognition, looks very cool, Greenlit it!

You could say so, yes ;)

Agustin, considering your plot overview for Asylum: Memories, is it safe to say that Scratches and Asylum are set in the same fictitional universe?

      Which tier? Please, do say!

    5. BigD on

Looks great. Now I'll have to beg to update a tier to help this along!

I've just upped from $15 to $30 too. I'd love to see the expansion, but it's already worth it for the soundtrack and record book.

      Very Nice Expansion!

Steam is free; check it out here:

@Atarun: Thank you! We can do this ;)

Basically, if you played Scratches: Director's Cut, this like a far more ambitious The Last Visit chapter.

Yes, S.D. is correct. It's not a *full* new game, but something very different based on the Asylum world and assets. And we're certainly planning some references to the original Asylum story, so this expansion would be closely connected to the Hanwell universe.

Let me clear again: this expansion won't be required to enjoy and understand the original story. Both "games" are fully independent from each other.

Palindrome Bob: Except that none of the "greenlight BASS2" funds could actually got o BASS2, but in this case, since it's actually a huge content expansion for Asylum, the funds *would* go toward it, though not necessarily pay for the entire work. Notice he said "practically like making a new game", no "exactly like making a new game". In practice, it will go through pre-production/art & concept design/production/testing like a second game. I'm assuming that it will be released for sale at a later date for a price that one would expect to pay for an expansion (30-50% of the price of a full game), and that an edition combining both for a modest discount would also occur.
[all speculation based on earlier statements, not to be taken as fact... I don't work for Senscape!]

    14. Atarun

Upped from $15 to $30 as a modest contribution towards reaching that awesome stretch goal. :)

I was hoping for Cthulhu, but this is better. :)

    16. Korg on

I would really love to see this happening, maybe with paypal account help we can reach the goal :)
And already voted cognition on steam and make a lot of friends vote them, best of luck for Phoenix Online Studios

So, in essence, it's like the 'Greenlight BASS2'-stretch goal in the Broken Sword-kickstarter.

Here's the thing: the $166,666 isn't enough to cover all the expenses. I'm not joking when I'm saying that this is practically like making a new game.

Of course, we're planning to reinvest sales from the original Asylum to make it happen, but reaching the stretch goal would ensure we can do it. If we don't, I can't guarantee anything as it would depend on sales.

Much can happen until Thursday though, and this update has already been VERY well received ;)

    19. Anaxphone

Sounds promising! this would almost (ALMOST) make up for not getting the "Summon Cthulhu" stretch goal.

      SquigPie on

Wait, so is this potential expansion stretch goal only or will we get it anyway, but at a later date?

Because I'm not sure if we can manage 59,000 in 65 hours.

    21. Michael Beyl on

So say we don't make that final stretch goal, would this expansion still see the light of day (get it? Has to do with LIGHTS!) or is this just a stretch goal only?
