Here's the mandatory pre-update to remind you that I'm working on the next big update which is becoming a sort of Halloween special. Yes, I can definitely guarantee it will be equally epic, tragic, cyclic, and of course, pontifical (whatever that means).

So the plan is to go live on October 31st. with a really big piece and lots of news. I've been working non-stop to surprise you with more cool stuff! Stay tuned!

I was hoping for the lithium or thorazine, but morphine would suffice. or the electro shock treatment.. tis always beneficial. Or just a swift kick to the nads. that usually would shut me up for.. a while.

Sounds like you have your hands full. I hope whatever update you choose, it is equal parts epic, tragic, cyclic, and of course, pontific. Anything less and we'll be calling for a new president of the facility!

In the meantime while you work on things and slave ver a hot toaster strudel.. I shall do my best to while away the time in my padded cell discovering the beautiful intricacies of asynchronous leather gnawing. omnomnomnomnom

It's 30 days already?! Aaaarrghh! Someone please invent that bottled time thing from Chronomaster.

Still working on that "Really Huge Update With Brand New Exciting In-Game Content" but I might release an interim one like this (which you seem to have enjoyed anyway) in the coming days.

Or I could just administer some more morphine to keep you at bay. Your call!

it has been 30 days.. it is time for our medicine, doctor Agustin. Where is my shot?!

Excellent update and totally happy with all of this awesomeness. If you need any filler texts or entries I have a feeling you could outsource some book entries from this large group of inmates. I imagine if you had a list of topics you'd like to see short entries for we'd be more than able to help provide these. Might help cut down on some leg work on your end and let people feel a bit more involved.

Just a thought, perhaps I shouldn't be allowed out of the hydrotherapy room as much any more... Too much thinking...

Cleo, oldfonts.com is a pretty excellent link, thanks for sharing! However, it's true that readablity should be more important than having an authentic font, at least when it comes to videogames.

Evolutionary, that's unlikely at this stage, I'm deeply sorry, though backers should be able to try a sizable build with plenty of interaction this year (not just walking around land ooking at things).

TrentJaspar, keep in mind these videos are virtually spoiler-free. Perhaps the text I reproduced is more spoiler-ish, but I'm still keeping most of the story in Asylum under wraps. It's guaranteed that everybody, including backers who have played the alpha, will be surprised when the game is released. And thanks for the support, as usual -- indeed, we have set some high (make that astronomical) standards for ourselves and we're glad backers understand that. Also, Cordes Jr. is doing great thankfully, can't complain :)

ThomasN, yes, I'm aiming for an average of 500 words per document, which amounts to a short 3-4 minutes read. Some key documents may contain up to 1000 words, about 6-7 minutes reads, so I think we're OK. Like I said, the most important thing is that the contents are interesting and thrilling, but overall I'm including more scattered, shorter books instead of a small bunch of dense volumes.

    7. ThomasN on

Cool! Remember to keep the text short like in the vein of The Longest Journey or spruce it up by making drawings in it like in that book in Fran Bow. Also, make sure you place books where a soothing music is played :-)

Hi, Agustín. Thank you for another nice update. TBH I don't watch most of the vids because I'm ridiculously spoiler-averse (this game is about a mental institution, right?) but I think it's great that you send updates to your loyal backers. I know you must feel tremendous pressure to deliver a perfect product (pressure mostly brought upon by your own high standards, I suspect), but just know that the majority of us are more than happy with the level of effort you've put in and are just happy to be a part of your chef d'oeuvre. I hope Agustín-junior is doing well and that he hasn't put you in your own mental institute...

It's good that there is progress. Earlier there was a indication (assurance actually), there the game would be done 2016. So, given it's September of 2016 now, are we actually going to see it released before December 31st, 23:59?

Great update, Agustin! I really like those richly illustrated book covers. Gorgeous.... in a creepy way, of course.

I have also been puzzling over fonts --- mostly trying to find fonts that look like authentic handwriting while still being easy to read. Fontcraft (fontcraft.com) has some nice historical fonts for books. The best "handwriting" fonts that I've found are Old Fonts (oldfonts.com) Historical Pen Fonts. I hesitate, though to use them, as they might be troublesome for the player.

Gregory, you might want to check out this interesting link about the irreplaceable art of typography circa 1800: http://www.selfpublishingreview.com/2009/12/deconstructing-bembo-typographic-beauty-and-bloody-murder

A very good article explaining why old school fonts will never go out of fashion. Like I said, the test above was temporary and we still need to do a proper layout for pages and improve the font. There's not even kerning right now :)

A thoroughly decent update. Nice to see some meaty in game shots, and as a designer, I very much appreciate the attention to detail put into the typography of these old tomes. I grew up with a great many early 1800s books in my parents old house.

An update with words and the occasional video works for me ;). I don't mind waiting for kickstarted games as long as there is communication by the creators, and you do an amazing job at that Agustin, thanks so much.

Billy Joel is a must, preferably with huge dashes of JD. Should speed up the creative process. Take my word for it.

Snake, no, we didn't do that. We're not that crazy.

Benjamin, thank you for the nice message. Always making sure Asylum lives up to every promise we made!

Mental note for next update: imitate Billy Joel.

So I've never actually left a comment before on a kick starter I've backed before. I've backed probably about 7 projects. This and 4 others are still in the works. The others are pretty major projects. Shenmu 3, Bloodstained, yooka laylee, and one obscure Zelda like game that I can't quite remember the name of right now. Anywho, just wanted to say keep up the hard work. Love all the artwork and the demos I've played. I do still have faith in you all. I've got plenty of other games to tide me over while waiting for this. I genuinely like your updates as well. Really look forward to playing it in the future.

The readable books you are inserting in the game are not actual complete, 100+ pages-worth-of-content books... or are you?

nope. no sir I don't like it. i didn't see a video of you playing piano and singing the words for this update to several billy joel tracks. I didn't see a neo 1980's music video of you and youtr crew lounging in a decrepit old rotting asylum telling us about whats been going on. and i CERTAINLY didn't see any physical prototypes yet for the Hanwell Do-it-Yourself Shock Therapy Machine I was promised with the collector's edition... FOR SHAME... I may be forced to give up and use my patented pocket sized lobotomy kit and just forget the whole thing.... *laughs insanely*
