Now, back to the original campaign......
This new patent-pending product, the Compost Chopper, aids in creating usable compost in a shorter amount of time with more efficiency and uniformity. The compost chopper is a four-bladed tool that works with a circular chopping board designed to fit within a standard five-gallon bucket. Kitchen scraps are tossed into the bucket and chopped between the board and the chopper.
By creating uniform, smaller pieces, composting time is greatly reduced and the quality of the compost is increased. This occurs because the total increased surface area of the smaller pieces allows microbes to more quickly digest the scraps. The increased surface area also aids in moisture retention and air movement, both of which speed up the digestion process.
The uniform nature of the small pieces also helps with even composting, eliminating the need to screen your compost prior to use. The compost chopper works with all composting methods and every composting bin, It is even suitable for tower garden systems and vermicomposting methods.
The complete Compost Chopping system comes with a chopper, the chopping board, and a standard 5-gallon bucket. However, the chopper and chopping board will work with any standard 5-gallon bucket.
The Compost Chopper used in all the photos and videos you see is the working prototype made over 3 years ago. I've left it outside for a majority of that time, and have used it extensively for all my traditional composting, as well as for my vermicomposting. The edges are still sharp and it works as perfectly as the first day it chopped. Your chopper will differ in appearance, but will function exactly the same.
What else can the Compost Chopper do?
- It can prepare feed for small livestock such as chickens.
- It can prepare fruits and starches prior to processing ingredients in mash for wine and spirits.
- It can break up large chunks of soil when preparing a garden bed.
- It can stand on it's own!! Yes, a garden tool that stands. This is worth it in itself!
Progress to Date
We have already begun producing an initial run of 100 Compost Chopper systems in anticipation of fulfilling sales. This is also a way for me to record vital data on production times, to better understand the costs associated with producing the choppers.
We also have in-stock the buckets, rivets, and tooling required to complete the choppers.
Helping Each Other
As you can see, we are well on our way to producing the finished final product. So, why do we need you?
Our Kickstarter Goals:
- To help people who compost achieve better and quicker results.
- To get the Compost Chopper in the hands of consumers and elicit feedback for product improvement.
- To prove enough demand exists for this product to take it to the next level.
- To catch the eye of a national yard and garden tool manufacture and turn this into a successfully licensed product with a nationwide distribution network.

Risks and challenges
I anticipate the primary challenge to be shipping the chopper system. The size of the box will require a higher-than average shipping fee, which effects our slim margin, but won't be a deal-breaker. If I have a large shipping order, I hope to be able to negotiate a better deal.
One of the other challenges will be to secure the proper man-power to meet any high order volume. I do not see this as a major problem, since there is a large labor pool in the City of Radford and surrounding areas. Positions will be granted to students from the local universities, as well as members of the community who need work. I often hire people on a part-time basis to meet demand with other projects, so I know what to expect.
Since I have already begun to build the first run of 100 choppers, I am aware of the time necessary to produce the product, as well as which vendors can supply the materials in the correct quality and time-frame.
If ever there is a delay in the fulfillment of any of the reward levels, I will immediately notify those effected and keep the entire community of Compost Chopper enthusiasts up-to-date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
