A Grape Night In launched back in March 2012 in a bid to make wine more fun and accessible by hosting tastings in people’s homes and offices. We have since had loads of fun popping-up all over London through Secret Wine Suppers, Sunday Skool’s and #WineWednesday residencies.
The time has eventually come where we want to settle down and create our very own space! Whilst it will be permanent, it will be ever changing with a rotating calendar of chefs, themes, and topical tastings. We’ve always been based in South London, and think Tooting (and moreover the market) will be the perfect space for our new home!
Once a pop-up, always a pop-up and although we are building our very own home we're not looking to go super high tech. We want to build a home, somewhere that is rustic, comfy and inviting. For this we aren’t asking for big bucks, as we are investing personally ourselves, but we do need a little extra to help us fit out the shop and get us started! It would mean so much to us to know that it was our friends, family and followers (including future followers!) that helped us get the home we always dreamed of!
A little bit more about our new home...
We have always been a South London based; keen to get South London involved in the pop-up scene. Over the years we have explored the area through lots of different events, but we have always had our eye on Tooting. It's the home of the UK's largest lido in the UK, the enormous and lush Tooting Bec Common, and the iconic 85 year old Tooting Market with it's eye catching art deco facade. What we love most about Tooting is that it is such an eclectic blend of great offerings; authentic Indian food, unique pubs, seriously tasty Lebanese, trendy burger and chicken shops. All that is missing is wine! We couldn’t be more excited that we get to have our wine bar in the area, and more specifically, in the market!
Being a pop-up business means we have been constantly changing, coming up with new offerings, moving to new locations and discovering new customers. Although we are now looking to set up shop in one place, we still want our concept to be evolving. Not only will our featured wines change monthly, as will our tasting and supper themes, we will also be inviting a different pop-up chef to take over our kitchen.
Taking the snob out of wine
We talk about wine a bit differently and this will be embodied both in the space and through our quirky but accessible wine selection and monthly themes. The space will be comfy and relaxed, somewhere you can sit back have a glass and enjoy wine with out fuss or formality!
Wine with FOOD
We are big fans of both wine and food, and tend to have a plate of food next to our glass of wine and so we will continue to keep this in our concept. We think wines first, food next and want to prove wine can be paired to all kinds of cuisine from comforting Italian, to aromatic Malaysian or even spicy Ghanian food! So we'll be challenging the monthly chefs to create a menu paired to our featured wines.
Bang for your Buck
We not only believe that wine doesn’t need to be expensive to be enjoyed, but by simply trying something new and drinking off the beaten track you get more bang for your buck. All our take away wines will be priced between £8.00-£15.00 a bottle, and a simple corkage fee will be added on if you want to drink in.
We are using Kickstarter because A Grape Night In is not a big corporate business, but a small one born out of passion. So far we have grown our business organically and we therefore think it would be apt if it was you that could help make this happen.
Please note that we are not allowed to offer alcohol as a reward, however the experiences we have offered as rewards are restricted to persons over 18 years old.
Risks and challenges
As with any project there are a few unknowns that might set us back a little but we've spoken with the experts and are pretty confident that our bar will be up and running by early July.
Although some may say Tooting is not an obvious place for a wine bar, it is what attracted us to the area in the first place, as we always wanted our wine bar to be the unexpected, even location wise. We have been operating in South London for three years, and have hosted pop ups in Clapham North, Clapham Common, Brixton and Balham so we know we already have a local following. And we know the Tooting community is supportive of new businesses in the area and we look forward to meeting the locals!
Another challenge we face along with other traders of Tooting Market is promoting it as a night market, as currently it only operates as a day time market. Though there are precedents of other markets in South London which have successfully achieved this transition and we're confident the same will happen for Tooting Market.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
