About

Waterloo-Belgium, 1963. A Dominican nun, under the nickname Soeur Sourire, conquers the world with the gay song Dominique. Its simplicity attracts fans from all over the world and Dominique reaches number one in the States leaving the Beatles and Rolling Stones behind. Ed Sullivan, the famous American TV-presenter travels to the convent of Fichermont to get Soeur Sourire on his program while Debbie Reynolds agrees to star in a “fictional’ movie about Soeur Sourire.

Soeur Sourire – whose real name is Jeanne Deckers - wants to compose engaging songs and to realise her ambitions, decides to leave the convent in 1966. Together with Annie Pêcher, whom she had met during one of her youth-camps, they move into a flat in a suburb of Louvain. Besides the habit, Jeanne Deckers also parts with the name Soeur Sourire. The convent has forbidden her to use that name any longer. Because she doesn’t want to use her own name, she chooses Luc Dominique. In 1968, Deckers’ biography appears also under that name. She tells about her trip to Canada where to her dismay, she had to perform in shady nightclubs. In Belgium, Jeanne Deckers is confronted with the fact that the record company, “Philips”, is no longer interested in a defrocked nun. The contract with “Philips” had expired and they didn’t have the intention of renewing it.

In 1969 Jeanne Deckers asked the convent permission to use the name Soeur Sourire again because the name Luc Dominique means nothing to anyone. The permission is granted and later follow a few records for children under the “Hebra” label, albeit not very successful.

Meanwhile Soeur Sourire had to pay a huge amount of taxes to SABAM. The proceeds from Dominique had gone to the convent in Fichermont. The nuns had been very generous with the money earned unexpectedly and paid a radio-station with it in Rwanda, to the Papal missionary work training Priests in Zaire, to the Bishops of Chili, the Bishops of India, etc. Instead of being rich, Soeur Sourire had loads of debts. “Claire Joie” – a refuge for autistic children founded by Annie Pêcher went bankrupt and Jeanne Deckers struggled to make a come-back. With the help of record-producer, Marc Moulin, a disco-version of Dominique appears in 1982. It flopped. If the new version of the song had been successful, record companies would be interested again, but they were more and more convinced that Soeur Sourire had been a one-hit-wonder.

In the years that followed, Jeanne Deckers had to cope with her weak health and found herself struggling with a heavy identity crisis. She keeps recording and painting but each time it seems that the world is no longer interested in Soeur Sourire. In spring 1985 both women make a final decision. They commit suicide.

But the story doesn’t end there…

Many years after her death, reel-to-reel tapes and a few cassette tapes were found stashed away in the basement of her late lawyer’s office. On those tapes, Soeur Sourire had recorded a lot of songs, many of them never previously released. It was her wish that the songs would be released after her death, but they never were. After her lawyer’s passing all stuff was moved into the basement waiting for someone to discover them. And so, it happened…

There’s a lot of useful material on the tapes and we want to honour Soeur Sourire’s last wish by releasing those songs onto CD. We picked 14 songs.

Of course, there’s a lot of work involved before those songs can be released onto CD. The tapes must be digitalised, the songs remastered, then the pressing onto CD, marketing, etc. “Global Recordings Artists” in the States is busy working on this, but we do need some financial help to make this happen.

We also need to register a domain name and launch an “official” website. You can already review the website that I have put on my own free webspace. Of course, do bear in mind that some links do not work, and that the website is far from finished. But you can already have a listen to the songs in “raw” format. Many of them are home recordings.

I do hope you are as eager as we are to fulfil Soeur Sourire’s wish and release this “new” CD. Thank you very much for your generosity and God Bless!

Do not hesitate to contact us if you need further information. We’ll provide it with great pleasure.
