Background

Digital Publishing – especially publishing to the iPad – is in full swing and gaining more and more momentum every day.

However after having launched the first project we (see “about us”) often see enthusiasm followed by disillusion:
Established publishing processes don’t adapt to the new “multi-channel” needs and user acceptance is low due to media experience.

We experience that every day and thought, enough of that:
Our publishing processes need to be refined, media experiences optimized and tailored to the device.

Do we have all the answers? Probably not. But a lot of examples of successful and failed projects. And experience in many aspects of publishing and media development.

Help us to give you more than just a thought-provoking impulse. Help us to give you a book that serves as your companion to new ways of publishing, to agile publishing.

Abstract of the book

Digital Publishing is emerging into a new kind of media situated directly between print, web and motion. It combines the best of these worlds and creates a completely new kind of experience.

By doing so Digital Publishing bridges the gap between so called “classic” and “new” media. Also publishing for iPad, Kindle Fire and other tablet and smartphone devices is heavily influencing the way we look at this “other” media.

This requires a completely new approach to publishing and media production:

  • We have to reorganize our teams into multidisciplinary groups and to remodel our old-style waterfall processes into agile ways of collaboration.
  • We have to rethink the way we create our content incorporating important aspects like right storytelling and user experience design in order to shape a true rich media narrative.
  • We have to renew our infrastructure in which publishing happens into a media-independent, responsive and platform-agnostic framework.

The book “Agile Publishing” describes each of these necessary change-processes in detail, including recent real-world case studies. Written by thought leaders of the publishing industry it gives you all the strategic, creative and technical tool set in hand to transform your working environment into a place that fits the needs of modern publishing.

“Agile Publishing” is targeted to all involved in any kind of publishing: From graphic designers and advertising agencies across media companies as well as companies in manufacturing, technology, life sciences, financial services and other industries.

  • Around 180-220 pages
  • Delivered as PDF and print-on demand book (see pledges)
  • Two language versions: English and German
  • Topics cover organization, creation and technology:
    Learn about agile processes for publishing, creation of digital media, story telling, user experience design, media experiences tailored to the device, navigational concepts, technology, delivery formats that can be used (and why) for your digital publication, responsive and adaptive layouts and much more
  • If we manage to write it in the same style as our previous books, it will be informative, hands-on, comprehensive and yet entertaining to read.

This will not be a guide on how to use a specific product, it’s going to give you the right knowledge on how to organize and create your digital publication and what the technology you will choose need to offer.

How we will get rich

No, that's not the plan (at least not with this book).

So why are we doing this via Kickstarter? As we have already written some books and magazine articles, we know how much money “side services” cost. We are in the lucky situation that we can do a lot ourselves (like layout, design, eBook creation etc.):

Here’s a quick estimate (ignoring travel costs):
Royalties for images:            $500
Costs for illustrations:        $1,000
External copy editing:        $1,500
Translation costs:              $4,000
Sub total:                          $7,000
Kickstarter/CC fee                 $690
Tax                                     $1,725
Total                                   $9,415

So as you can see we will are willing to dig in our own pockets to cover travel costs (we all live in different cities, fees and tax). Unfortunately our pockets are not deep enough to pre-finance this endeavor.

Risks and challenges

Writing and thinking about publishing is 'business as usual' for us so we are all placed to create a good-written and thought book. Our main challenge will be to find time to get our collective thoughts materialized in type.
And of course it will be hard to find good proofreaders and translators skilled in the quite new field of Digital Publishing, especially in the short timeframe.
Also we will have to do a lot of co-ordination in the team since we are all working in different parts of the world.
