She is the lone passenger of a slowly dying train station. As a practical young adult, she doesn’t see why her family couldn’t have just moved closer to the high school she is attending. She is rather embarrassed by the whole situation and the attention it garners her. She just wants to graduate and go to a university in the big city.
However, life in the sticks isn’t all that it seems. While riding the train home, Mariko ends up at an unexpected stop, which changes her life forever.
Inspired by the real life events of a train station in Japan, we decided to give the story a real life spin and this is the result!

The visual novel featuers animated background art by PyriteKite which we hope will certainly immerse you into the beautiful world the story is set in.
Please note that the GIFs may not loop seamlessly here, but rest assured that it actually does loop in-game. You can view a playlist of our animations below!
Additionally, the game features unlockable content and a glossary.
Our Sprite art by Melow fits perfectly with the story. We hope you enjoy her designs as much as we do. We'll be releasing a new character profile along with our updates. So stay tuned!
Try a small part of our story by playing the demo. It isn't terribly long, but we hope it holds your interest.
The main story is short, but rest assured - we have side stories and an after story for you. A popular bit of feedback given to us for our project, Forgotten, Not Lost was that people hoped to see what happened afterwards, after the story has ended. We've got you covered!
A fast reader will complete the full game in about 3 hours. We tested this with eight readers.
Following A More Beautiful World's success, which is still in development, we have also released Forgotten, Not Lost, an extremely well received kinetic novel on Steam that currently holds a 95% positive rating.
We've also worked with other several other indie game projects, having advised them on development and marketing, such as Queen's Crown and A Foretold Affair, as well as Mystic Destinies.
Afterthought Studios strives to create the best possible project given our resources, and this time we need your help to bring this small project of ours to its maximum potential.
At first we had decided to simply work with creative commons music, in which we could find quite a few good pieces that could work with our project.
However, seeing that A More Beautiful World had a full length OST, we hope to be able to do the same for When Our Journey Ends as well. We would like to bring the project to the full creative potential.
Not only can we achieve this goal, but with your funding, we can license vocal soundtracks as well.
All in all, we'd like to use the money that you pledge to us to hire a composer.
Based in Singapore, Ming Yan is a musician, designer, and entrepreneur. He has been involved in various entrepreneurial and corporate projects, and has worn many hats in each of them, from music producer to graphic designer and project manager.
Ming Yan's music is inspired from composers such as Joe Hisaishi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yoko Shimomura, and Nobuo Uematsu. He hopes to one day have his own movie and game soundtrack. Ming Yan strongly believes that Action Trumps Words (no pun intended).
Our lead author, Morgana Harp has assisted in the writing, programming, and other various tasks for several visual novels. She feels strongly about visual novels and is also passionate about video games in general, especially indie games. When it comes to creating video games and visual novels, she likes to think of herself as a jack of all trades.
Our second writer, Darren Kwok has assisted in the marketing and greenlighting of several visual novels. Having written, A More Beautiful World and Forgotten, Not Lost, he seeks to continue bringing the magic of reading to others.
The logo and User Interface for When Our Journey Ends was made by and designed by Camille Arana, our resident UI artist.
Risks and challenges
We are currently still diligently working on our other project, A More Beautiful World. The speed of that project has not been slowed due to the slow pace of work but rather the fact that we hit an additional stretch goal that required us to lengthen the story significantly.
A More Beautiful World's backers' only demo was released and has been well received - Our promise to other backers to release a public version has also been done and is currently on the Steam store.
When Our Journey Ends is almost done, lacking just a couple of CGs and hopefully, with your help, an entire OST.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
