About

Now and Then is a board game experience for 2-6 players. Like many classic board games, you take turns rolling the die and exploring the board. As you do, you will unlock a series of sixteen challenges.

These challenges take you on a journey through your past, present, and future – deepening your relationships with the other players and helping you develop your vision of the legacy you hope to leave.

objective

Try and collect Challenge Tiles that appear on your Mission Cards. If you collect all three Challenge Tiles that appear on a given Mission Card, it is worth three points. At the end of the game, everyone will reveal their Mission Cards and tally their total points. Each Challenge Tile can only be used toward one Mission Card.

The player with the most points at the end of the game is the winner. The game ends when all 16 challenges have been completed.

gameplay

Each turn is made up of three parts:

1. Trade in Tokens for a Power Up - To start your turn, you may trade in three of your tokens for a Power Up card. You do not need to share which Power Up card you drew with anyone. You are free to choose whether you want to play the Power Up card this turn or save it for later. You may only trade in for one Power Up card per turn, and you may only play one Power Up card per turn.

2. Roll the Die and Move your Piece - Unless you play a Power Up card that says otherwise, roll the die and move your piece the number of spots that appears on the die. You may move in any direction, but you must follow the maze, without jumping over any walls (gold lines). You may not reverse direction mid-move. Try and make your way to the available Challenge Tiles that appear on your Mission Cards, landing on as many Wild Card and token spots along the way.

3. Action!- There are four kinds of spots you can land on:

challenges

Challenges are for all players. Distribute the contents of the Challenge Envelope. All the cards in the envelope are identical. Each player should receive one. Read the instructions aloud. The timekeeper then flips over the 5 minute timer and all players have time to quietly complete the challenge (this is when you might want to put on some music). Once the 5 minutes are up, everyone goes around and shares what they wrote. Once everyone has shared, all players collect one token.

ending the game

Once the last challenge envelope has been completed, each player calculates how many points they’ve earned. They should flip their Mission Cards face up and place the relevant Challenge Tokens on each card. Each Challenge Tile can only be used toward one Mission Card. The player with the most points at the end of the game is the winner. Congratulations!

Risks and challenges

We believe this is the exact kind of project that Kickstarter was made for – edgy, playful, deep, and directly pushing the frontier of what is currently on the market.

This will be our first time releasing a board game and already there have been a huge number of learnings. Given that there are still unknowns to be resolved between where we are now and final delivery, it would be irresponsible to not acknowledge the inherent risks that exist for us, specifically with regard to our assumptions about cost and production timeline.

That said, the game is relatively straightforward from a production perspective so we don't anticipate many complications. We're also very pleased to be making it available at what we believe to be a very affordable price, one that should make our game widely accessible but still bring in a good enough margin to fuel further growth down the line.

The last thing is that we've set out goal relatively low ($15,000). Our aim is to hit that goal in the first 48 hours. In fact, we have our sights set on much larger numbers. The decision to set the goal lower is mostly to appeal to the fact that fully funded campaigns are more likely to be massively successful over the long run. So please keep spreading the word! We want to get Now and Then into every home and workplace!
