Introducing the ACE 1 Ultra-Clean Biomass Cookstove, a piece of ingenious engineering that will ignite your outdoor adventures while making a vast global impact on health, the environment and poverty. This portable stove brings smoke-free and off-grid technology to those who need it, and joy to those who seek it.
As seen on:
So this is a Powerful Stove...
Whether it’s your camp stove that runs out of gas or your bbq that’s too big to move, too slow to heat up, or too smoky, cooking outdoors is great fun but can also be a hassle.
The ACE 1’s power can ignite picnics in the park, perform soundly at music festivals, cozy up your camping trips and bring backyard parties back to life for you and your friends.
Its power can fuel outstanding cooking adventures.
The ACE 1 burns biomass and then uses the sun's energy to make it burn without smoke at an incredibly high efficiency. This speeds up cooking time, uses much less fuel and lowers carbon emissions. With its built-in battery and included solar panel, the ACE 1 also provides a convenient source of electricity in remote areas.
Easy to transport at 4.6 kg / 10.1 lbs, so your culinary adventures can continue to stretch borders.
It burns all biomass, so you can easily find or buy fuel from sustainable sources.
Because it is smokeless – unlike a fire or barbecue - everyone can gather around the chef without getting smoke in their eyes or clothes.
It's a source of power for your phone, speakers, radio or LED light (included) using the solar-chargeable, built-in battery with USB and DC port.
Quick & easy clean-up when you're done. Close to 100% combustion, so it burns fuel fully. You're left with a teaspoon of ashes, which can be tipped onto the ground as added soil nutrients. We had to do something about the part nobody likes.
Close to half the people on the planet cook their food on indoor open fires or use inefficient fuels. The smoke these cooking methods produce is critically damaging to the lungs and eyes, severely limiting health and quality of life.
In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 4 million people die each year from the effects of indoor cooking smoke – more than both HIV and malaria combined.
The ACE 1 has been developed to combat the catastrophic effects of indoor cooksmoke. Our goal is to make it available in areas that need it most. Potentially millions will have access to smoke-free cooking that provides both heat and electrical power in the household.
Four million hectares of forest are cut down each year in Africa, the majority of which is to provide fuel for cooking. That's over 5.5 million football fields. Because the ACE 1 uses up to 70% less fuel and can burn sustainable biomass, it means less deforestation and less greenhouse gas emissions.
For urban families who purchase their fuel, the ACE 1 significantly saves them money, as they don't need to buy as much of it. Women and children also benefit from the cookstove - due to its efficiency they don't have to travel far to gather fuel, saving time and minimizing the dangers of venturing outside their towns. As little as a few handfuls of twigs can be enough to cook on. Freeing up time to spend on other more valuable activities.
So we mean it when we say this is a powerful stove.
A fan blows oxygen into the chamber through holes at both the bottom and the top. Within 1-2 minutes, the fires temperature increases until it reaches approximately 1000°C/1832°F, causing the biomass to gasify. Hot gas floats up to the top, meeting more oxygen and combusting completely. This produces as much as 5kW worth of energy, while the outer cover does not become hot enough to cause injury. A fully-charged battery powers the fan for over 20 hours of cooking and doubles as a device charger or power source for LED lighting. You charge the battery using the solar panel, or simply by plugging your ACE 1 in on the grid.
The ACE 1 has been designed to use up to 70% less fuel and burn a wide variety of biomass, including collected kinds like sticks and twigs, cowdung, and corn-cobs. But crucially, it also burns processed biomass fuels like wood pellets and briquettes produced from waste materials like sawdust, forestry waste, or agricultural waste.
We are African Clean Energy, a family-owned company based in Lesotho. Learning about the dangers of cooksmoke and the enormity of the problem, Stephen Walker and his son Ruben, founded the company in 2011.
Our goal is to beat the numbers. We're taking the ACE 1 to the areas that need it most, establishing ties in countries such as Lesotho, South Africa, Kenya and Zambia. In rural areas, we can provide millions with smoke-free cooking, as well as heat and electrical power. Customers in urban areas can replace dangerous fuels like paraffin and charcoal.
We produced 35,000 stoves of our original model in our factory, and plan to set up more local production lines overseas. As a profit-for-purpose company, our production and distribution in lesser-developed countries is independent of external funders. This guarantees our future financial stability and growth as a company, allowing us to expand throughout Africa and beyond.
As an African company, we aim to benefit the local economy as much as we can. Our decision to set up manufacturing in Lesotho came easily as it’s a Least Developed Country (or LDC) rated nation, meaning job creation is sorely needed. We have proudly provided jobs for 60 local men and women so far. We can boost production, and thus employment, to over 250.000 stoves a year.
Through a mixture of micro-finance, carbon credits and sustainable biomass fuel sales, we can make the stoves more affordable; measures that will create further income and jobs. See the FAQ's for more details.

Shipping, customs and VAT are included for USA, Canada and European Union. Outside of these places, it starts getting pretty pricey to ship, so we think we found middle ground by asking you to add shipping costs of €30 / $42 to your pledge. If the costs are substantially higher to your region, we might ask you to add additional shipping.
We are always happy to answer questions and get in touch with fans of the ACE 1. Please do get in touch by visiting www.africancleanenergy.com/contact/
In Lesotho we want to donate the stove to families that have been devastated by AIDS, where often the head of the household is a teenager. Please check out www.africancleanenergy.com/lesothoorphansproject
