When National Geographic Traveler of the Year, Christine Gilbert, had children, she didn't stop traveling. She strapped that baby to her chest and headed out into the world. Over the years, her family has explored India, biked across France, road tripped across the United States, backpacked through Turkey and lived in over 40 countries.
After her third baby was born, Christine was looking for ways to answer her questions:
- How do you do a multi-day hike with kids?
- Keep babies safe in countries with bad water?
- Go winter-camping for the first time?
- Bike-camp across Europe with different aged kids?
- Sail in Asia with a toddler?
She soon realized there still wasn't a publication that addressed the unique needs of adventuring parents who want to keep doing the things they loved pre-baby—with some sensible adjustments. She knew if she had these questions, other parents must have them too. Enter Almost Fearless! Christine’s popular travel blog almostfearless.com was a success for years - and in 2017, she transformed the website into a full-blown magazine. Almost Fearless magazine is a cross between the travel writing of Afar, the outdoor adventures of Outside and the thoughtful parenting advice of Brain, Child.

Risks and challenges
The fall issue is completed, the winter issue is on schedule. The funds raised on a per subscription level pay for the cost of printing, shipping, writers, and our small staff. Going off schedule is the only risk, either with issues with our printer or staff leaving. We've tried to mitigate any delays in the future by planning, not just for the current issue, but for the entire year. We have several guidebooks started (almost completed) and by having the editorial calendar set this far in advance we can get submissions from writers months ahead of schedule.
The biggest risks are illness (editor-In-chiefs have sick kids too) and staffing changes, so we have two managing editors who can jump in at any time. We're a very small team, so staff changes have a big impact. We're aware of that and have created documentation systems and redundant training, so another team member can keep things going.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
