About this project
Who Are We?
A Far Cry is a small orchestra based in Boston, making waves nationwide. Started by a group of musicians ten years ago, the Criers aimed to answer a simple question: What if we could make an orchestra that operated and felt like a string quartet? With no conductor, and every single musician a full artistic partner, the result is a huge variety of programming, a high standard of excellence, and national and international recognition that the Criers are demonstrating the future of classical music.
What Are We Doing?
We're making an album! A new release from A Far Cry is a major event. In fact, our previous full-length "concept album" was funded on Kickstarter and went on to be nominated for a GRAMMY award. We couldn't be more excited for the follow-up. Visions and Variations includes some of our signature pieces, and besides sounding really, really great, they make a deeper statement about the nature of collaboration, A Far Cry, and humanity.
- Benjamin Britten: Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge
- Ethan Wood / W.A. Mozart: Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman
- Sergei Prokofiev: Visions Fugitives
Britten's set of variations sits high in the pantheon of all-time great string orchestra works. Each variation explores a different aspect of Britten's teacher Frank Bridge, and the variety and sheer creativity of the music always leaves audiences asking us, "when are you going to record that?" The answer is: NOW!
When we asked Ethan Wood to arrange a simple set of Mozart variations on the theme we know as "Twinkle Twinkle," we never imagined the explosion of color, boldness, and humor that would result. Ethan's vision invites Mozart into a madcap world full of compositional and instrumental virtuosity, a place we're sure twenty-first century Wolfgang would have felt right at home. We are proud to now bring this piece to more listeners with this world premiere recording.
Prokofiev's Visions Fugitives were originally character sketches for solo piano, and A Far Cry's performances of the 15 Visions arranged by Barshai have become audience favorites. Here A Far Cry completes the set, adding the final 5 Visions, arranged by Criers, for a world premiere string orchestra recording of all 20.
Our incredible team of performers and composers is joined by the multiple-GRAMMY-award-winning producer Jesse Lewis, and we are thrilled to be working together. This project has been in the works for three years now, and we have pooled our energy and resources to make this a lasting project. We invite you to join us!
Visions and Variations will also offer new ways for our audience to go deeper inside the music. Along with the album, we will make additional behind-the-scenes media available, such as video interviews with the players and producer, recording footage and photos, and sneak-peaks into the composer’s creative process.
We have a vision and a plan. All of the pieces are in place. Help us bring this important music to everyone.
But Wait... There's More
We've had a leadership donor step forward to offer an unprecedented challenge in order to support both Visions and Variations as well as to support the limitless artistic potential of A Far Cry as it continues to trailblaze into its second decade. Once this fund drive meets its goal of $25,000, every dollar we raise above and beyond the goal will be matched dollar-for-dollar by this donor, up to a total of $20,000.
In other words, when your amazing support allows us to blow past that $25,000 goal and raise a cool $45,000 through Kickstarter in this campaign, the entire above-and-beyond amount ($20,000) will be matched, putting a grand total of $65,000 to work bringing A Far Cry's incredible spirit and music-making to more and more people.
We can't thank you enough for being a part of this. Let's make it happen!
Risks and challenges
There are very few risks associated with this project. It's already recorded, and simply awaits funding for musician expenses, post-production, marketing, and PR. Forming a unified final product can be challenging for a group of our size, but we have a system of team-leadership in place to make sure that every musician's voice has the chance to be heard and to shape the final result, while still staying on course and keeping the whole group's vision in mind.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
