In A Far Cry, there's nothing we love more than bringing the music we love to the people we love!
We have 6 recordings out on various labels, but now for the first time, we wanted to take things a step further and create an album that follows one thread from start to finish.
We wanted to make an album that is an extension of who we really are: from the program to the playing and the sound concept, all the way to the program book.
Dreams and Prayers
Dreams and Prayers explores music as a passageway between man and the divine, as experienced through religious mysticism. The album, which was born last year as a vividly moving and spectacularly-reviewed live concert, is comprised of music spanning nearly 1000 years from deeply rich and varied spiritual traditions.
- Hildegard von Bingen: The Origin of Fire
- Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol: Vecd
- Osvaldo Golijov: The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind
- Ludwig van Beethoven: Heiliger Dankgesang, op. 132
A Far Cry has teamed up with the amazing David Krakauer to perform and record the world premiere of Osvaldo Golijov's The Dreams and Prayers of Issac the Blind in its new version for clarinet and string orchestra. We have re-imagined a work of Hildegard von Bingen, written for monophonic voice, here played by violins in unison. Beethoven's Song of Thanksgiving from his string quartet op. 132 is his cry of gratitude to the heavens after being healed from illness, and a new commission from Turkish composer Mehmet Sanlıkol drawn from the Sufi tradition completes the program.
Our incredible team of performers and composers is joined by the wonderful Grammy award-winning producer Jesse Lewis, and we are thrilled to be working together. A year ago, we performed this program and discovered an exciting chemistry that we wanted to continue and share with more people. We have pooled our energy and resources to make this a lasting project and invite you to join us!
Dreams and Prayers will also offer new ways for our audience to go deeper inside the music. Along with the album, we will make additional behind-the-scenes media available, such as video interviews with the players, recording footage and photos, sneak-peaks into the composer’s creative process, and windows into the cultures and traditions inspiring the music.
We have a vision and a plan. All of the pieces are in place. Help us bring this important music to everyone.
Special Note: If we're able to go above and beyond our goal, we would love to do some extra special things. Releasing as an SACD, on vinyl, in binaural...all things we can and would love to do, and will do if possible!
Risks and challenges
Once we have recorded the album, forming a unified final product can be challenging for a group of our size. We have a system of team-leadership in place to make sure that every musician's voice has the chance to be heard and to shape the final result, while still staying on course and keeping the whole group's vision in mind.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
