The Airfold Towel Bar challenges the status quo of traditional towel hanging methods with its patent pending design and cool dry technique.
Airfold improves aeration which dries your towel 40% faster, stops bacteria growth and keeps your towel fresher, longer without using any energy.
Did you know that your towel has 465x more bacteria per square inch than your toilet seat?
The combination of your towel’s ability to absorb moisture with the dark, steamy bathroom that it hangs in makes it a prolific breeding ground for bacteria.
That sour towel smell?
You guessed it: this is because of the bacteria lingering in the fibers of your towel, which not only causes this moldy smell but can also lead to skin infections and acne.
Faced with this knowledge, it is tempting to simply launder your towel after each use but this has it own consequences.
In 2005 in the U.S. alone, laundry processes used 847 billion gallons of water, 191TWh of electricity, and 225 million tons of CO2.
In a world of declining natural resources and increasing global warming, it is clear that another solution is needed to stop this bacteria growth and improve people's hygiene.
At Airfold we want to provide an elegant solution that will improve towel hygiene in an eco-friendly way so that we can keep the planet clean.
We want to get the Airfold Towel Bar into approximately 2000 homes across the world so that we can make a positive impact on your life and the world around you.
The average American household produces 2600 lbs of laundry across 400 loads per year.
With the Airfold Towel Bar's ability to keep your towels fresh for longer we hope to enable and inspire you to save 20 loads (a 5% reduction) of laundry in 2020 and in the process save:
- 500 gallons of water (25 gallons per load)
- 180 kWh of electricity (9 kWh per load)
- 66 kg of C02 (3.3 kg per load)
- 9hrs 20mins of your free time (28 mins per load)
- $50 in washing costs, drying costs, and laundry supplies ($2.50 per load)
Together with our combined efforts we can save a total of 50,000 loads of laundry in 2020 and conserve 1.3 million gallons of water , 450 MWh of electricity, and 170 tons of C02.
This is the first step in Airfold's journey in making a much greater environmental impact and we want you to be a part of it.
The elegant extensions on either end of the Airfold Towel Bar are what make it special. Instead of folding a towel over the straight portion of the towel bar, which is reserved for a wash cloth, the towel is folded in half and then the right and left edges are flipped over the ball ends and pulled toward the center of the bar to secure the towel.
A quick fluff down the back of the towel settles it neatly on the towel bar with most of its surface area exposed to airflow. We call this the “open fold” technique because upon closer inspection, the surfaces remain apart and avoid trapping moisture.
This smart design allows you to hang a washcloth or hand towel so that it maintains enough space for airflow and was designed to be compact so that while you may have to share your bathroom, you won't have to share your towel bar!
Now everyone who shares your bathroom can have their own Airfold Towel Bar to improve hygiene and help prevent the spread of bacteria and infections.
To put the drying performance of Airfold to the test, experiments using two different towel sizes (Small: 28x48" and Large: 28x53") were conducted to compare Airfold’s performance to that of the traditional towel bar.
In each experiment, two identical towels were wet evenly with the same mass of water (Small: 447g (1.9 cups) and Large: 1112g (4.7 cups)).
One towel was then double folded over a traditional towel bar and the other was hung using the Airfold Towel Bar. Finally, the weights of each towel were then recorded periodically until each towel returned to its original dry weight.
In both of the experiments, the towels hanging on the Airfold Towel Bar returned to their dry weights (409g and 618g) much sooner than the towel hanging on the traditional towel bar: 41% faster for the Large towel and 45% faster for the Small towel.
When drying yourself after a shower you can expect around 25-65g of water on your towel.
Obviously, this is much less water than the towels in these experiments were wet with. This means that you can be confident that the next time you go for a shower, the Airfold Towel Bar will have completely dried your towel and stopped the growth of any odor-causing bacteria.
That's right: no more smelly towels!
After 2 weeks of hanging a bath towel and washcloth (both wet after showering) on the Airfold Towel Bar, there was not any hint of must or odor and every day both the towel and washcloth were completely dry within 24hrs and ready for the next shower.
The key to stopping bacteria growth is to remove one of the three elements needed for it to grow: moisture, warmth, or organic material.
This means that completely drying your towel in between uses will arrest the growth of bacteria and the best way to do this is to hang your towel with as much surface area exposed as possible.
Current hanging methods do not give your towel the best chance of drying. Double-folding a towel so that it can fit on your towel bar or using a hook means that a lot of moisture is trapped between overlapping folds.
In fact, if you think about how surfaces overlap when you double-fold your towel, you will realize that 50% of your towel's surface area is closed to airflow and in contact with another wet layer.
These overlapping layers inhibit drying and allow odorous bacteria to breed and cling to the fibers of your towel. This is worsened when you cram multiple towels on the same bar both preventing adequate drying and spreading bacteria from one towel to another (typically from your dirtier hand towel or washcloth to your bath towel).
Even heated towel bars can't help because the warm environment they create actually accelerates bacteria growth as your towel dries.
The Airfold team shares the ambition of challenging the status quo and improving the world around us by evolving the bathroom towel bar and making the open fold concept a revolution for towel hygiene.
We are passionate about creating a quality towel bar that delivers, is better for the environment, easy to use and displays your towel in elegant simplicity.
