HERO: Prepare your champion with transparent cards!
A cooperative boardgame with transparent cards. Players must prepare Heroes to defeat the dragon. Thousands of combinations!
A dragon has arrived to your kingdom with a promise for disaster and destruction. But there are no heroes or warriors strong enough to defeat it. The common townsfolk must find and prepare a hero to confront the dragon.
It's time to stop some bad dragon business! Hero is a cooperative game where the whole party gets to win... or lose. First, players get to pick their favorite character among the available playable characters.
- Academic : Provides mystical properties to the belongings of the hero (Electrifying, Invisible, Flaming, etc.)
- Blacksmith : Provides weapons... or at least tools that can be used as such (Axes, Shields, Frying Pan, etc.)
- Breeder: Provides animal companions (Griffin, Pig, Horse, etc.)
- Bureaucrat : Provides nobility titles (Hidden easter eggs on the titles)
- Sensei : Provides combat techniques of different styles. (Punches, Kicks, Wedgies, etc.)
- Gatherer : Provides items with different purposes. (Waterskin, Bracers, Boots, etc.)
- Storyteller : Provides extraordinary prophecies. (By combining 3 fragments to get a full prophecy)
- Merchant: Provides any supply for other players. (Weapons, Companions, Items, etc.)
The search of a volunteer has begun. Playable characters will have roles that are not precisely adapted to confront a dragon or a similar menace. Everyone will have to search for volunteers that want some fame.
Volunteer Heroes won't risk their lives so easy. Make an exquisite offer to persuade them: Give them some gold, for they are risking their lives!
Once you have a recruit, equip it with everybody's best effort. It is crucial to think what is convenient in which situation.
Each character has its own unique way of helping the Recruiting Hero. Players take the corresponding supplies matching the character's role. (The Blacksmith will forge weapons, while the breeder will domesticate some fine beasts, etc.)
After suffering some damage from the dragon, and teaching it a good lesson, the game will come to an end.
Hero is a game thought for players who like a different experience each time it is played. By having a large variety of Roles, Supplies, or even Invaders, the game promises a lot of replay value.
The dragon is only a type of invader. One of the stretch goals will unlock a new menace for the core game: The hydra! (Further expansions will include other new invaders).
Help us making this game bigger! For each Achievement reached with a GOLDEN frame, 1 Bonus card will be added to the game.
Some of these Bonus cards will be taken from the community's ideas, so you can also submit your ideas here.
Hero is a cooperative boardgame for 1 to 6 players. However, we are currently developing a Free-for-all mode (PvP) with the same components where players will prepare their champions to fight in the Arena.
You can see here the first draft for the instructive, if you want to read it all
The following video shows the basic mechanics of the game (using the Quickplay components). We will stream a Full Game session soon and will upload the video afterwards.
The following images were taken using an earlier prototype of the game that does not reflect the final quality of the product. The final game has cardboard counters and dragon mat (Like the components in the video above).
Players choose 1 of the 8 main characters of this core set. Each one has unique abilities and can provide a certain type of supplies to the hero.
The first to take its turn will be the dragon, who invaded the kingdom and will destroy part of it by revealing an amount of cards from a Kingdom Pile. Some of those cards can be taken as actions during the next round.
Players will take actions during their turn to collect resources, gather supplies, recruit heroes, equip stuff, etc. Some actions require them to pay resources. Some other actions will give players Zeal, which counts as a special resource. The point of the game is to make the correct decisions with the limited amount of time and resources that the party has, before the dragon annihilates the whole kingdom.
All characters can Recruit a Hero by paying gold. Heroes are conformed by two cards; one card determines their race or profession (Faerie, Werewolf, Fighter, etc.) and a second card, called Aspect, will give them some personality or other trait (Super-smart, Chubby, Gladiator, etc.). The Aspect card is the 1st transparent card that the hero will receive. Then, players will try to equip other cards to make the hero stronger.
By giving Zeal to the Recruiting Hero, players will encourage the Hero to confront the dragon and it will become a Confronting Hero.
After all players take their actions, the dragon and the heroes will fight. Heroes will inflict damage to the dragon in the form of "Tetris" tiles and the dragon will damage Confronting Heroes with damage counters. The dragon will also destroy part of the Kingdom again.
Players win if their heroes deal full damage to the dragon by completing all the dragon grids.
Players lose if the dragon manages to discard all the kingdom cards.
We want to share with you that a Free-for-all game mode is in our sight. But first we want to focus on launching the game as it was originally intended to be played: a cooperative game.
After hearing feedback from the community and restructuring the campaign, we decided to offer the game's components with the best quality rather than reaching them with stretch goals. So, the game will include cardboard mat and tokens, and all transparent cards will have the protective varnish. The NEW stretch goals will include tons of more content for the game!

We playtested the game about 30 times before we considered it was ready to be played by other people. In total, 18 boardgame-fans and 8 casual players tried it and gave us excellent feedback. Some of them even gave us a couple of great ideas which were added to the game afterwards. Here are the comments from the last players who played the game before launching the campaign:
Our project is USA-friendly, Canada-friendly, Euro-friendly, Australia-friendly and New Zealand-friendly. We will be supported by 3 different shipping companies located in Mexico, Europe and USA, letting us deliver all rewards in time. We will use Jamey Stegmaier of Stonemaier Games bulk-shipment method to achieve all this.
Our HQ are located in Mexico city, where the production will be held. However, all product deliveries will be sent worldwide.
These are the fees when it comes to sending physical rewards: North America for €8 (or $9 USD) ; Mexico for FREE (yes, free shipping!) ; Europe €12 (or $13 USD) ; Australia and New Zealand €14 (or $16 USD) ; South America €29 (or $35 USD) ; Asia and others €44 (or $52 USD). *** These are approximate parameters *** (Detailed shipping costs will be displayed on your pledge manager during each transaction that involves a physical reward)
We are still covering a part of the shipment costs, so they are now accesible for everyone. That matter is one of the main reasons why we had to raise our actual funding goal.
A good option, of course, is to send the rewards to the address of a friend or family member in North America or Mexico, where shipping costs are the lowest.
In Kickstarter it is possible to include people in a project. When you back us, it doesn't matter with how much, you are part of this project, and the main reason we want to do it as best as possible. We think that people who believe in designers and developers (like us!) should be awarded with awesome ideas.
In the beginning, the project was thought to be a new and fresh idea. A cooperative game where players felt the possibility to make a character wield and wear anything they crafted. Exploiting the possibility of transparent cards, this idea could come true.
Since clear cards are not common components for a boardgame, the production is not necessarily easy to achieve. Also, the risks implied for not being an already tested idea may deceive normal boardgame players.
So we decided to reach people willing to surpass boundaries and who are excited to try a new experience.
We made a deep research through a bunch of crowdfunding platforms before deciding to go with Kickstarter. We all came to the same conclusion: Kickstarter is simply the best platform to back our project; its community is definitely the fondest with our idea.
Since you are already a part of the game, we would love to share with you how the project will be held in numbers. This is our funds destination graph:
Production is our most important concern, for it explains a lot of the quality reflected in the final product. The numbers are based in calculations that take into account the effort, time, cost, difficulty, merit, and some other relevant factors.
If you are reading this, then you know the extraordinary stuff that the Games Community of Kickstarter is capable of, so let's make this thing real!
Welcome aboard and thank you for being here!!!
- By believing in this game and backing us.
- Choosing multiple HERO reward tiers to get additional copies of the game for someone you think that would like it.
- Sharing on social media like Twitter or Facebook.
- Sending feedback or ideas to firstname.lastname@example.org (we want to make this project for everyone, not only for us)
- Helping the community to get a lot of Achievements, so we can make the experience more enjoyable.
Risks and challenges
This campaign was originally launched on June 17th; but since the first hour, many interested people asked us to make the game more accessible and lower the shipping fees. We decided to subsidize a good part from each shipping, but they were still high. So we made a lot of research and found the way to send rewards with friendly shipping costs for USA, Canada, EU, New Zeland and Australia. However, the funding goal changed because of all of the reestructure. We sent word of it to our backers, with whom we are still very grateful for believing in this project since the very beginning, and cancelled the previous campaign.
This campaign is the result of restructuring the previous one. Every pledge is more accessible as well as the Achievements and the Stretch Goals. We found another provider for the transparent cards and now we can offer the whole game at a lower price, but we need to make a lot of them (because it will be a large scale production).
So, our Funding Goal might be slightly higher than the one in the previous campaign, but the rewards are more accessible for everyone, and our commitment with every old and new backer is stronger.
