In Hero, players take the role of ordinary people with different trades who must prepare a champion to fight the ferocious dragon. Using transparent clear cards, players recruit different heroes throughout the game and equip them with any kind of supplies.
Although the main theme is medieval fantasy, Hero is not limited to any age or theme. The funniest combinations come from mixed topics, and of course, the stats of the heroes will be affected by the supplies and equipment you provide.
Take a look at some combinations:
Want some more? This is how the early prototype looked like (Art is outdated):
With this 2-week campaign, we are seeking to fund the artwork for Hero and be in touch with board gamers who like this game as much as we do.
As a backer, you will become a Hero ambassador; if you wish, you can be involved in decision-taking for different aspects of the game's development. Any idea for a card will be included in the game – at least 1 per ambassador.
The Kickstarter campaign for the production of Hero is scheduled for July 2018. On June 2016 we launched our very first Kickstarter campaign for Hero; although that campaign didn't reach the -high- funding goal, we have learnt a lot since then. Now, after having worked in several Kickstarter campaigns, we want give Hero another chance.
We are VERY EXCITED to start working on Hero again. And if you decide to be part of it, you should be too:
t's important to note that funds raised on this Kickstarter campaign will go entirely for the art rework, but it doesn't mean the total price for it is $2000 MXN. We are committed to produce Hero and we will place most of the money from our pockets. Art is expensive, though, so every bit of support counts.
- Heroes (i.e: Fairy, skeleton, mantis-man, alien)
- Animal companions (i.e: pomeranian, chicken-army, gorilla)
- Weapons (i.e: butter knife, oversized frying-pan, greatsword)
- Items (i.e: balloon sword, red cowboy boots, helmet, cloak)
- Titles - Hidden easter eggs (i.e: Hero of High Rule, The-lord-who-must-be-named)
- Prophecies - Consist of three parts (i.e: Legendary Dragorider/with an explosive love for/fainted koalas)
- Aspects for heroes (i.e: Ninja, winged, huge)
- Attributes for companions (i.e: Fire-breathing, spiked, farting)
- Essences for weapons & items. (i.e: flaming, invisible, magnetic)
Backers pledging for a higher amount will receive something extra, in addition to the perks for becoming a Hero Ambassador. So here are some extra rewards we prepared:
This collage will include the finished full-color artwork. A printed copy of this collage may be included in the final copy of the game with the name of the backers and their corresponding card submissions.
There will be a special section to thank you, our ambassador, who believed in this project since the beginning!
For the extra support, you can actually be part of the game. We will work with you until you are happy with the result. Your name will also be included on that character's mat. Maybe a blacksmith, a breeder, an alchemist, a courtesan, a merchant, a storyteller... we will let you know the available roles (Assigned in a come-first, pick-first basis).
This project is part of Kickstarter's Commissions initiative where backers become proactively involved in the creation of the product. Please feel free to comment your ideas and/or exchange them with other backers :)
At the beginning Hero was a cooperative game. Now we are adapting the game to offer a semi-cooperative variant (in addition to the fully co-op, which will meet some changes to eliminate the power player factor).
The mechanics are finished and the game is completely playable. However, it is likely that we will try out some tweaks to improve the game.
Here's the game in a nutshell:
Objective: Recruit and equip heroes and send them to kill the dragon. If the dragon destroys the kingdom, the players lose. In a coop game, players win if the dragon is slain. In a semi-coop game, the player who equipped or recruited the best heroes, wins.
Mechanics: Action taking, resource management, tile placing
Win condition: Kill the dragon; place enough tiles to fill the grids.
Lose condition: The dragon destroys the kingdom; Kingdom deck has no cards left.
Players take actions during their turns to get resources, recruit heroes, equip heroes, help other players or change the conditions of the game. There are common actions which any player can do, and role-specific actions.
When all players have taken their turn, players may send heroes to battle.
Heroes have a life total and a courage factor. A useful hero can target different sections of the dragon, deal damage, distract him from attacking the kingdom and activate some special player powers.
During the combat phase, the dragon decreases the heroes courage, deals damage to them and to the kingdom (discarded kingdom cards can be used as actions for the next round). Then, heroes who have not fled or died can deal damage to the dragon.
The damage is dealt with tiles (we called them Tetris tiles). And the life of the dragon consists of 4 grids. When they are filled, the game is over and the dragon lose.
At certain points of the game, disasters will trigger, causing players to become hindered or face other challenges.

The following videos have outdated art and production quality. They are here to show you more about the past of Hero.
Hero first Teaser (April 2016)The art used for this teaser was intended for the prototype. In this teaser, the core idea of the game is introduced. Recruit heroes and prepare them for battle!
Hero launch trailer If you were with us since the beginning, you will recall this video. Maybe you will get nostalgic and excited like us...
We payed for 3 pieces of art. They were intended for promotional use and selected one of them for the box. However, this misled some backers and they were disappointed when they met the actual prototype images. In this video you can also learn more about how the game works.
How to play (Basic rules)Here you can see the basics of the game. The advanced play mode features different character mats and Kingdom cards are played face-up (more possible actions and options for players). Disaster cards resolve after certain rounds to affect players or empower the dragon. Different resources requires players to manage better their resources. We are very sorry for the shaky camera.
As you can see, the game was finished in terms of gameplay. However, we want to tweak some mechanics:
- Simpler and faster way to get resources.
- Eliminate the power player factor on cooperative mode (1 player can tell other players what's the best strategy).
- Incorporate semi-cooperative mode where all players lose if the dragon destroys the kingdom but players have different scores according to their participation. Maybe having different colored tetris tiles.
- Change the path to get supply cards into your hand and then equip them to Heroes.
- Overall, we want to change the tedious parts.
This is a short 2-week campaign. At the end of it, you will receive a survey so you can tell us how you want your name displayed on the credits section and you may submit your final choice for a card idea.
We are committed to produce this game regardless of the result of this campaign. Unlike other campaigns where we post an update only when there is much information to share or important news, in this campaign we want to share every bit of progress for Hero. Most of the time, asking for your opinion, feedback or to vote for an option.
If you do not wish to receive updates, you can always turn them off for this project. Go to your profile settings to do so.
William and Juan (the guys in the video) are the founders of Aether Tower and full-time employees of their own company. They met Iván a year ago today via Kickstarter when Tricksters and NecronomiCORP were launched from Kickstarter México.
The Publisher: Our company was born from this game. Back in December 2014, we decided to create a game together and see where it all ended. After 18 months of work, we launched Hero on Kickstarter (June 2016) but it did not reach its funding goal. We were not prepared.
Three months later, on November 15th (exactly one year ago), we launched Tricksters and it reached its funding goal in 6 hours! Since then, we have done a lot of things as Aether Tower...
Aether Tower is a board game publisher & fulfillment partner in Mexico. We are crowdfunding consultants and manufacturers for other board game projects in our country. Recently, we partnered up with La Caravana to open the first Board Game Club in Mexico City.
We are currently producing Cooking Rumble and soon, we will start working with another publisher, Detestable Games, to bring their games to Kickstarter.
Tricksters was key to accomplish all of this, but Hero was what ignited Aether Tower's fire. Hero is on the scope again, let's bring it to your table together.
- The Artist: A year ago, on November 15th, NecronomiCORP was launched in Kickstarter too. We have been in touch with its creator, Iván Escalante, to exchange ideas, experiences and even to work together for the fulfillment of our projects. His illustration studio is Gnomosapiens.
Ivan's style fits perfectly for the mood of Hero. It is fresh, funny and attractive. We decided to work together for Hero. Hopefully, it will be the first of many games brought to you collectively by Aether Tower & Gnomosapiens.
Take a look at some of his work:
Please feel free to comment any inquiry or start the conversation about this game :)
We would be very grateful if you could share this project with a friend who might like Hero too.
Stay tuned with the rest of our projects:
Risks and challenges
Regarding this campaign for artwork
As previously noted in the campaign description, most of the money for the art will come from our pockets. We are committed to turn Hero into a reality because it is a very meaningful game for us. All of our heart and effort is deposited in it.
The illustrator, Ivan Escalante, is a friend who earned our trust and admiration for his talent, speed, and imagination. There's always the possibility for delays but at least our past experience with Ivan has taught us that we can trust in having everything as scheduled.
A big challenge from this campaign would be having many backers for the highest tier. The core game of Hero had 8 main playable characters. For the relaunch we are planning to simplify the base game and include expansions. If more than 8 backers take that reward, we will have to offer the possibility of appearing in expansions or as Kickstarter exclusive alternate characters. We thought deeply about the possibility of limiting that reward but we really want this campaign to be inclusive, that's why there are no Early Birds or limited rewards.
The community behind Hero will be yet another thing that will make this game the best it can be.
Regarding the campaign for production (Summer 2018):
Right now, we are swamped with projects, so a big challenge is to meet the deadlines for each step on all of them. However, we quit our jobs 2 years ago and dedicate full time on Aether Tower, so there is no excuse for delays. At least from our part.
As far as we value local manufacture for our games (Tricksters was made in México and Cooking Rumble's portable version too) for production we consider going with China; either Panda GM, Whatz Games or Eastar.
This game deserves the best production with an approved manufacturer.
