Aether and Steamworks is highly unique. It creates aspects of many interesting fantasy ideas and has a flavor all its own. Each individual character has quirks, unique aspects of race and class that create a variety of options far beyond base character class ideas of other games and provide limitless self expression.
Magic/Inventions and ability use in this game is imaginative without feeling restrictive and bogged down by mechanics specifically designed to give everyone exactly the same experience. A character is rewarded by clever thinking and interesting use of their character's strengths, and capable of fitting in to any team dynamic rather than need a set type of party in order to accomplish tasks.
Also, it's neat. Read about it and Trust me on this.
The game takes place in a contained solar system, with opportunities to create wild west fantasy in the lawless wastes, corporate fantasy in the massive ancient Monarchy and Empire cities that stretch from horizon to skyline, the downtrodden civilian masses scraping by in the under-cities while the rich and magically connected noble houses laud their wealth and privilege over the others. Or a game may move into the Shamanistic and brutal wastes of Rulo, the Frozen world of Eris to study unknown Aether effects at the edge of the 'Sphere, Into the low magic realm of Silvershield and trying to fit into the pecking order of the Empire itself, to a Void campaign in space as a pirate, freighter, or explorer trying to reach the edges of the known 'sphere to see what they can find, avoiding the Aethalium (necrotic energy fungal lifeforms that take over living tissue in a deadspace-like zombie fantasy setting). The opportunities are both endless and considered.
