What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About this project

 

 

GET FIT on your bike through adjustability and FLY thanks to improved aerodynamics!

This is our company's core concept and our new adjustable stem will be the key to achieving this goal for pros, amateurs, and teams as well as fitting specialists themselves.

But only with your help!

Our components focus on the perfect fit because we want to transform YOU, the biggest component on your bike, in to the most aerodynamic version of yourself!

We have a whole chapter on "the importance of bike fitting" as well as all of the product details including specifications further down below!

We have listened to our backers, fans and supporters - We are releasing a medium-length (tip-tail length: 195mm) stem first! It has a total of 50mm of handlebar adjustability giving you a range of center tube to center bar adjustable lengths between 80mm and 130mm.

A shorter (tip-tail: 165mm) and a longer (tip-tail: 215mm) version of the stem will be released as well, if this Kickstarter is successful. So stay tuned for the next steps after this Campaign! Visit our website here to sign up to our newsletter!

We are confident that we will pass all necessary ISO testing. We have 3 companies of ISO testing experience on our shoulders and with Oval Concepts, we have already passed ISO testing on a lightweight carbon fiber 150mm stem, so we are very familiar with the process and the standards it is based on.

Also, Bruce Eddington - head of carbon forming at Force India F1 - is only one of many people involved in this project and thus we place our utmost confidence in bringing this product to the market being perfectly stiff and durable!

Our Stem has a range of benefits for both cyclists and teams/shops, including a solution to the important inventory issue that teams have. Rumors have it that team SKY brings up to 90 stems with them on tour! That's ridiculous but luckily can now be solved with the Aero Design Swiss Stem!

Our primary focus

We focus on creating products that have the ability to easily move any single rider into their optimal cycling position, exactly what we've done in developing this stem. 

This way you will no longer have to precisely measure your optimal riding position before ordering components or change your handlebar position frequently as you progress and get fitter and more flexible.

If you're a young aspiring athlete and grow a little or if you increase flexibility throughout the season you can now just adjust the stem instead of buying a new one. You can also adjust your bar position as needed to get the fit you want for TT’s, crits, or adventure/endurance racing using one stem.

Because you know, it's much easier to adjust the bike to the rider, than to try to adjust the rider to the bike.

And if you are a bike fitter, save a lot of time by just quickly moving the handlebar instead of having to install multiple stems until you find the correct fit.

Our stem is easy to use! You won't have to go to the bike shop to adjust your position on the stem, you will be able to do it comfortably from your home!

Another focus of ours are the add-ons that will be compatible with the nosepiece clamp. So you will be able to remove the nosepiece and attach a bike computer or a bicycle light for example. Read more about that further down below!

 

Our stem’s unique design allows for a great number of add-ons. 

As you can see, the nose-piece of the stem can be removed. Wondering why? We will be releasing special nose pieces which can easily substitute the original one:

  • Aerodynamic nose piece with halogen headlight and sidelights
  • Bike computer attachment nosepiece
  • UCI-inspired, rubberized aerodynamic nose piece for additional safety while group riding

Additional add-ons:

  • Top plate to securely hold your Garmin, iPhone 6 (67x138mm), or 7 and Samsung S8 (more models will be added to the list)
  • Aero bar extension mounts with fore/aft adjustability
  • Aero bar arm rest mounts with fore/aft adjustability

Our quest towards the "Get Fit To Fly" concept will not end with the delivery of our stem. If this campaign will be successful, we will work on producing another set of new revolutionary bicycle components.

First on the list? Aerodynamic frame, fork and handlebar!

These products are also currently in development phase, they are already designed, tested, patented and pending UCI official approval. You can look for sneak-peaks in our video!

When will I receive my stem?

We plan to ship the first products to our backers in March 2018. Until then we're mainly going to run through testing and production phases.

 

For many years we have worked closely with the world’s best professional athletes.

In road cycling with athletes such as Mario Cipollini, Gilberto Simoni, Damiano Cunego, Roberto Heras, Alberto Contador and Cadel Evans, Chris Horner, Luiz Leon Sanchez and Eric Zabel.

In triathlons with Michellie Jones (IronMan World Champion), Torbjørn Sindballe (IronMan World Championship Bike Course Record!), Belinda Granger (12-time Ironman Champion), Dede Griesbauer, Justin Granger, Jozsef Major, Fabio Carvalho, Nils Goerke, Andreas Niedrig and Marcel Zamora.

On track with Leontien van Moorsel (Olympic Gold Medalist), Joan Llaneras (Olympic Gold Medalist), Sarah Hammer (World Champion) and Taylor Phinney.

We also collaborated and consulted with mechanics, technical editors, factories, university professors and designers from other industries.

 

Carbon Fiber

Over the years we have accumulated vast experience in working with carbon fiber and material specialists, therefore for us, it was the obvious material choice for the body of the stem. Carbon fiber is strong, lightweight, durable and it’s stiffer at a lower weight than almost any other material.

Unlike metal, carbon fiber’s stiffness can be finely manipulated; its stiffness properties apply only unidirectional, or along the long axis of the fibers themselves, so stiffness can be tuned based on how the carbon-fiber composite is oriented in the mold. 

Plus, let's face it, it looks really good!

3M™ Glass Bubbles

While final ISO testing needs to be completed, injection molded 3M™ Glass Bubbles is our high tech material of choice for the essential adjustment blocks. They are lightweight, high-strength, low-density, low-shrinkage, hollow glass microspheres made from soda-lime borosilicate glass. This material is engineered to withstand the temperatures and pressures of injection molding to precisely lock your handle into place. 

While there are other lightweight, high-strength, low-density, low-shrinkage, low compression options, 3M’s hollow glass microspheres made from soda-lime borosilicate glass is our first choice.

The correct fit on your bike can produce many benefits: aerodynamics, power, comfort and better health. These benefits are strongly correlated and are all extremely important to delivering a successful bike ride.

Many athletes take only one or two of these aspects into consideration but the ultimate cycling position can only be achieved through the balance of the four.

If your focus is directed only towards aerodynamics, you might not be able to maximize your power, you might be uncomfortable and therefore won't be able to sustain the position for hours or you might compromise your health for years to come.

Our stem will give you the ability to experiment and slowly adjust to a new improved position!

Morgan Nicol

Following his B.S. in chemical engineering at the University of California Davis and 5 years at 3M, he pursued his career in the cycling industry. His passion for the sport (and for a certain brilliant, beautiful, Swiss-Italian woman) led him to the Italian-speaking canton of Switzerland where he learned how to combine Swiss Quality and American Technology with an Italian Flair.

After more than 30 years of experience in the cycling industry and driven by his passion for innovation and continuous improvement, Morgan Nicol is taking the next steps to revolutionize the world of bicycle aerodynamics.

Risks and challenges

There are a few challenges that we could encounter along the way and we want to be transparent and share them with you:

1) We are currently negotiating official UCI approval for this innovative product but initial reaction during multiple visits has been positive.

2) The stem measurements pass FEA strength analysis but passing physical tests to meet the ISO standards do not always follow perfectly. The test results could force us to adjust some of the measurements (especially thickness and weight) and there could be some delivery delays as a result.

3) Our costs may increase 10-20% but we should have accounted for this variance in our budgeting.
