About this project
Liferaft is currently being made by Mike Boxleiter and myself (Greg Wohlwend).
Right now we are working on the alpha version of the 1st episode of Liferaft. We plan to develop three episodes as a way of breaking down the game into more digestible bits. Each episode will be $5, though if you pre-order the game you will get all three episodes for $5. If you wait until all three episodes are out you'll pay $15. Though, that may change depending on how development goes. Nonetheless, those changes won't effect anything with Kickstarter.
This budget is only for the 1st episode, though if we meet our goal we will keep funding open and continue to support the backers with new content and updates as we develop the next two episodes. We plan to have the 1st episode completed by November 1st, 2009 and the 3rd (the entire game) by March 1st, 2010.
Game Synopsis The entire game takes place over the course of one day in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi kind of universe. The main character, eg. the player, is a young woman (Goss) who's found herself forgotten at the bottom of an abandoned testing facility. For decades she has lived off of lichen-type substance, bioluminescent creatures and the light of friendly fireflies. The start of the game begins with an enormous squid creature crashing through the ceiling of a neighboring room which creates a pathway for her escape.
Liferaft is about her story. The first episode: her escape; the second episode: her revelation; the third episode: her resolution.
We don't want to spoil the game's story too much here which is why we're being so obtuse with the synopsis. There is a great deal more to the backstory of Goss and Liferaft though simply dumping it here will only soil the game when you actually play it! :)
Current Development As said earlier, we are currently in development of the game. We have a log of progress screenshots as well as a live and playable build of the game. We also tend to a devLog over on TigForums that you can check out.
We are using Flash to build the game so we can share the latest demo of our game with anyone who backs our project pretty easily. No installation or anything required.
On Spoilers Our game is somewhat story based so giving you up-to-date versions of the full episode isn't something we really think will be great for backers. We will be sharing and updating the demo version (first 15-20 minutes of gameplay) with all backers, though at some point in development that will become solidified (and stagnant) while we work on the rest of the episode.
Music Our music is being composed by the untamable DannyB who has worked on myriad of other indie game projects including Cortex Command, Blush and the upcoming Super Meat Boy.
We hope to release an OST once all three episodes are completed, or perhaps will release mini episodic EPs of the soundtracks if there is enough content there.
Money Well, we'll use it to live to be quite honest. We work on games full time with no other source of income other than what the games bring us. Kickstarter is a way for us to launch a more interesting pre-order option for Liferaft and also give us a little peace of mind that the game won't completely flop when we release it.
Right now we live just below the poverty level, though we're not complaining. We love what we do and wouldn't trade it for anything. Though with something like Kickstarter we might be able to afford some of the following (in order of extravagance):
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Locally raised meats, eggs and cheeses
- A hotplate
- More sleep
- Time with family
- Equipment for sports and outdoors activities
- Movie theater tickets or concerts
- Christmas and birthday gifts for loved ones
- Meeting new people, having a beer with friends
- Travel and lodging expenses for award shows and other professional invites
- Move to a city and interact with culture
