"The Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, and the Old Ones shall be." —H.P. Lovecraft, The Dunwich Horror
The Book of Three Gates compiles newly edited editions of H.P. Lovecraft’s public domain stories of eldritch horror, edited and produced by Simon Berman, and illustrated by renowned deific and fantasy artist, Valerie Herron (The Book of the Great Queen, The Book of Starry Wisdom).
Accompanied by essays and musings by some of today’s premiere Lovecraftian scholars, writers, and devotees, The Book of Three Gates will be a luxurious 11.25" x 8.5", approximately 180 page hardback tome, featuring a leather textured cover with gold foil pressed symbols of significance to the Opener of Ways, 12 interior B&W illustrations, end papers displaying a map of the Township of Dunwich, as well as other features to be unlocked as the Kickstarter meets its stretch goals. This premium volume is a companion to The Book of Starry Wisdom and will be a stunning addition to the library of any enthusiast of H.P. Lovecraft or worshipper of the Old Ones.
The Book of Three Gates centers upon three of Lovecraft's stories in which the ways between worlds have been shattered, transgressed, or violated:
The Dunwich Horror
The Dreams in the Witch House
The Haunter of the Dark
These iconic tales are accompanied by newly unearthed essays and mad ravings that blur the line between fact and fiction, science and madness.
The Book of Three Gates, like it's companion volume, The Book of Starry Wisdom, is meant to provide an immersive experience. Lovecraft's stories are full of hideous tomes of forbidden knowledge, and my hope is that these editions will make the reader feel that they are delving into those unspeakable horrors just like the protagonists of stories like The Dunwich Horror, or The Dreams in the Witch House. It's to that end that I've paired these stories with a selection of superb writers tasked with eroding the fourth wall between Lovecraft's fiction and fact.
Gorgons and Hydras, and Chimaeras—dire stories of Celaeno and the Harpies—may reproduce themselves in the brain of superstition—but they were there before. They are transcripts, types—the archetypes are in us, and eternal. —Charles Lamb, Witches and Other Night-Fears
Adam Scott Glancy (Delta Green)
Orrin Grey (Never Bet The Devil & Other Warnings, The Cult of Headless Men)
A.S. Koi (Honor & Sacrifice (Tribes of Heaven))
Evan Peterson (The Midnight Channel, Producer; SHRIEK: Women of Horror)
C.A. Suleiman (The Lost Citadel, Mummy: the Curse)
Don Webb (Overthrowing the Old Gods: Aleister Crowley and the Book of the Law, Uncle Setnakt's Night Book)
Bryan Thao Worra (Demonstra, On the Other Side of the Eye)
New to Lovecraft?
When a traveller in north central Massachusetts takes the wrong fork at the junction of Aylesbury pike just beyond Dean's Corners he comes upon a lonely and curious country. —H.P. Lovecraft, The Dunwich Horror
If you're new to Lovecraft's work this collection contains three of his most iconic stories and provides an excellent entry point into the nightmares of the Cthulhu Mythos. The three stories that anchor The Book of Three Gates are all set in Lovecraft's beloved New England, and are connected by the pantheon of blasphemous Great Old Ones that comprise his celebrated Cthulhu Mythos. Though Cthulhu himself does not appear in these stories, the other Old Ones loom large. Yog-Sothoth, Azathoth, and the nameless entity bound to the Shining Trapezohedron threaten the frivolous world of mankind.
The Dunwich Horror is the quintessential tale of the Mythos. The ancient and forgotten village of Dunwich Massachussets is home to the depraved Whately clan. Wilbur Whately, the eldest son, and sole surviving heir to the family, sets out to gain access to Miskatonic University's copy of the infamous Necronomicon. Should he do so, he will fulfill a dire prophecy that threatens the end of all things in the name of Yog-Sothoth.
The Dreams in the Witch House explores one of the most ominous locales of the city of Arkham, Massachusetts. Miskatonic student Walter Gilman's studies into mathematics have always been unorthodox, but after taking a room in the fabled witch house, his understanding of non-Euclidean geometry takes a sinister turn. Are his insights the result of mere fever dreams or gifts from the witch Keziah Mason and her familiar, Brown Jenkin? If so, what price will he pay for knowledge, and what will be the cost to the people of Arkham?
The Haunter of the Dark begins, "Cautious investigators will hesitate to challenge the common belief that Robert Blake was killed by lightning, or by some profound nervous shock derived from an electrical discharge. It is true that the window he faced was unbroken, but Nature has shewn herself capable of many freakish performances." Did Robert Blake truly die of such freakish, but natural causes, or did he delve too deeply into the history of Providence, Rhode Island's Starry Wisdom cult? The secrets of the Shining Trapezohedron beckon, and with them, the three-lobed burning eye...

Shipping will be charged after the Kickstarter finishes based on actual costs incurred to ship. We will collect shipping from you when you receive your survey from Backerkit in early 2017. The following shipping estimates are for your general information at this time. You will be charged for shipping via the survey later in the year, so please do not add shipping to your Kickstarter pledge!
At this time international shipping is unavoidably expensive. We're sorry we can't do more but for a small press publisher international distribution options are unrealistic.
Shipping estimates are based on projections for the 11.25" x 8.5", 180 page book. These estimates are subject to change based on final book weight, dimensions, and pledge information.

Risks and challenges
Any publishing endeavor carries with it certain challenges, particularly when dealing with overseas printers. Last minute typographical errors during final proofing or shipping delays caused by weather can result in delays. However, having produced the similarly formatted Book of Starry Wisdom, we have learned a tremendous amount and are very prepared to bring this book to press. We expect no significant problems in the production of our print run. As well, I, as owner of Strix Publishing, have several years of experience with Kickstarter both in terms of campaigns and rewards fulfillment, and am supported by a team of professionals with decades of experience in printing and publishing. I have previously overseen six ambitious Kickstarters with thousands of satisfied backers. While I am very confident in my ability to fulfill your pledges, I will maintain transparency throughout the process and keep you informed as to any delays that may arise. I understand that you are placing not just your trust in my hands, but your hard earned dollars, and I am committed to making good on my promises. Thank you so much for your trust and support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
