Wargamer, Train Enthusiast, Roleplayer this is for you!
The story so far...
Like many of you out there I like to have a good looking table when I play a wargame. I'm sure everyone out there have played with pieces of cloth (green or camouflage) cut out in organic shapes to represent trees. Then you may even put a few trees scattered to represent a forest or woods of some kind. Hell, I played just that kind of game recently. While it serves it doesn't look like a woods. Then there are the custom made pieces. These look great, but they are set pieces. They will always be what they are. If you have a stand of 5 trees that’s what it will always be. What about the train enthusiast that has a train set he can't keep up all the time, or the person who likes to change layouts all the time. These tree bases are perfect. Move them around to fit any shape you build. The roleplayer has a similar problem with ever changing scenarios.
Mine is a modular base system that will adapt to your current needs. This is how it works. There are 2 pieces involved here. The first is the base. These will come in a variety of shapes. Right now the shapes are as follows: an organic 5 tree base, 3 tree base, 4 straight base, 2 straight base, 1 straight base (also use as a single tree base), 1 corner base and 1 single base for that odd tree. See attached images below. When adding several of these together you can have any size wilderness you want. I will be producing some larger sizes for those that MUST have the largest Mirkwood forest possible.
The second part will be the insert. these are about 1 inch wide and 1/8 inch thick. These basically fall into 2 different categories. The first of these will be the tree base. This could be anything from a single tree, to a rock, a stump or telephone pole. The second part will be a wall base. These will be wall sections such as a stone wall, rock piles, fences, etc. , basically many types of liner obstacles.
Each piece, both the base and the insert, have a section where a rare earth magnet fits. Once attached to each piece you just put them into which ever form you want and they snap together. You can lift it upside down and they won't fall out, but, with a little force, easily come apart when you are done. It's that easy.
With this modular terrain system you can recreate any scenario there is. At the end of the game just snap them out and put them into any container for easy transportation. No need to have a large box for all those wall and tree stands. Bases lay flat and put everything on top of that.
Have you ever move into a static piece of forest and have to put the figures in front of it or the back to represent that they are in the terrain feature? Now, just measure and move into it just by plucking some trees out. Don't like the hole there then just put in some terrain blank plugs to fill it in. There you are; realistic, inexpensive, and adaptable.
The present scale for this project will be 15mm, 20mm and 25/28mm for wargamers and roleplayes and N, HO and S scale for the Train enthusiast
What is in the sets:
What does all this mean? Well, the following is what is available now with this kickstarter. There may be some changes with possible stretch goals, but this is the way it stands right now.
The sets will come assembled, which means they will be painted and magnets already in. All ready to go.
The base shapes:
5 stand base: Size 4" x 7" approx with textured ground.
3 stand base: Size 4.25" x 4.25" approx with textured ground.
1 stand base: Size 1.75" x 1.75" approx with textured ground.
4 stand base(straight): Size 1.75" x 10" approx with textured ground.
2 stand base(straight): Size 1.75" x 5.25" approx with textured ground.
1 stand base(straight): Size 1.75" x 2.5" approx with textured ground.
1 stand base(corner): Size 2" x 2" approx with textured ground.
Tree base and trees: The tree base will fall into many different types. Two of the bases are designed to be used with the trees I am using for this project by NOCH. I like these trees very much. They look like deciduous trees and have a very nice uniformed look to them. At present I am using just these trees for this. I will be adding fir/spruce trees, but not as part of the initial Kickstarter.
Tree base 1(TB1): designed for the larger Noch trees 20mm, 23/28mm and HO and S scale.
Tree base 2(TB2): designed for the smaller Noch trees 15mm and N scale
These have a variety of rock formations on them, These can be put into any base type or scale to represent difficult going.
Blank base: (PB): This is a simple plug with just the textured ground on it. Designed to fill in base types when you don't want any type of terrain feature there.
Stone wall 1 (SW1): This is a stone wall designed for the straight sections, approx 2.5" long ( 20mm, 23/28mm and HO and S scale).
Stone wall 2 (SW2): This is a stone wall designed for the straight sections, approx 2.5" long (15mm and N scale).
Natural rock:This is a natural rock formation with an insert to keep it looking that way or you can take it out to put in a tree.
What is in the works:
I have many different add-on's planned for this line. As this progresses they may turn into stretch goals. I don't want to promise the moon and only get you to the rocket platform. I want everything up and running in a timely fashion. below is a list of future parts of this project.
There will be different size bases designed.
The following pieces will be additional inserts for bases:
split rail fence
iron fence and gate
picked fence and gate
sandbag wall with dirt behind it.
wattle wall with dirt behind it.
barricade (crates, barrels, etc.)
mine field markers
What is needed now:
Well, what is needed to make this happen? I need some support to buy some new equipment and building materials. These pieces will be cast in a very durable black resin. Some will be straight forward pour molds and some will be done using an spin caster for additional speed and precision. I will need a new spin casting machine, molds, silicone’s, resin and magnets. Not to mention the 1,000 plus trees. I have done a lot of the preliminary work already and the test pieces look great and work great. Now I'm on to Kickstarter for funds to move onto the next step of full scale of production.
Question: Can I get these kits without the trees.
Answer: This falls into the yes and no category. No for the kickstarter, but yes when I have them on the web. This may change if enough people want just the bases and inserts.
Question: Can I get these kits not painted.
Answer: At present No. This will be different when they are on the web site.
Question: What about tree scale?
Answer: The trees come between 6" and 2.5". Basically you can get either small trees or large trees. Just pick and I'll make it happen. If you don't then I'll just give a good mix to make it look good.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
Risks and challenges
My promise to you! I will do this as fast as possible so you may wargame, roleplay or use your trains in style.
The turn around time frame once the Kickstarter is over will vary on a number of different factors. All materials I will need must be ordered of course, so I will be at my vendors mercy on how fast they will ship before I have whats needed to move ahead into production mode. I do have friends with spin-casters so the production molds will be done before I get the equipment for full scale operations. The quantity of casting materials needed as well as the trees will have to wait till the kickstarter is over. Once everything is in hand and set up I will start producing packages immediately The goal is to have everything out in less than a month. If things go crazy with this and the numbers sky rocket I do have a plan for additional help. This may take a little more set up time, but with the extra help I want to stick to my months goal.
I'll keep everyone posted on the status of the equipment and where I am at with production. i.e. When the machine arrives, I'll send out an e-mail, when the trees arrive I'll send out another. I want everyone kept up to speed on the whole process. If I'm running behind I'll do the same.
I hope to hit a few cons in the following months of the finish of this Kickstarter so I need to have as much finished as possible. I will not go to a convention to sell until all Kickstarter obligations are complete.
