Every thousand years, the stars align in a way that heralds the arrival of a new Witchqueen. Someone who can guide the magical community into the next age of sorcery, enchantment, and magical drama. How to decide who could possibly carry such a burden? The way witches have for millennia: throw a ridiculous party and show off your very best outfit.
Be Witching is a tabletop story game for four or more players. Each player represents one of the esteemed Witch Houses competing for favor at the millennial Witches' Prom. They'll do this by drawing rad witches and playing mini-games that let them show off their witch's outfit, magical powers, and sparkling personality.
It's a role-playing game for kids, adults, or both at the same time that celebrates the magic of femme expression and the power in being your most authentic self.
NOTE: Images are of the original version of the game. This Kickstarter is for a total revamp of the rules and game content!
How it works
Be Witching is made up of bunch of smaller mini-games. Players will play mini-games to create Witch Houses, to compete in magical duels, and to draw beautiful outfits.
Once players decide on a theme for the prom, each player picks one of eight witch character templates to start with. Then they get drawing! Players grab markers or crayons (or magazines and scissors??) and draw their witches' amazing prom outfits. Each player will get a chance to introduce their witch by narrating her dramatic entrance to the prom.
Over several rounds, players will make their claim to witchqueendom by showing off their magical abilities, asking each other interview questions, and winning fantastic awards. And at the end, someone (or someones) will give an acceptance speech and rule the prom.
It is a magical game packed with fun little ideas I can't wait to share.
Inclusion and representation
The original Be Witching included six character templates by artist Solomon Fletcher that serve as starting points for players' drawings. The new version of the game will include two completely new character templates.
We're queer creators and we've tried to create body- and size-positive art that celebrates all kinds of femme bodies, including disabled, trans, non-binary and male witches.
(There's even a furry template!)
Be Witching was one of the first games I made when I was starting to work on tabletop story games. When I first made it in 2015, it ended up a little bit closer to a board game than to the amazing imaginative story game it was meant to be.
Now that I've gained confidence as a story game designer through a bunch more role-playing projects, I feel ready to revisit my earlier creation and update it into something really special.
This Kickstarter will fund:
- The design and playtesting of completely revamped rules and content.
- Two new character templates by Solomon.
- Layout, design and printing for a brand new zine of the game.
Be Witching is a game about being arty, beautiful and DIY, so it's always been designed with the zine format in mind! When the staples are removed from your Be Witching zine, you're left with four sheets of character templates (two per sheet) and a neat four-page rulebook.
(You'll be able to print out more templates via free online pdfs -- or draw your own!)
Who am I anyway?
Hi! I'm Anna Anthropy. I've made a whole bunch of games, both analog and digital. I've also written books -- my newest is Make Your Own Twine Games, which will be out in March 2019. It's the first in a series of books for kids about how to make video games with free software! My day job is teaching game design at DePaul University in Chicago. I am a powerful femme witch, and my familiar is a little black cat named Encyclopedia Frown.
Thank you for supporting magical games!
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is...I've never run a Kickstarter before! But this seems like a pretty low-stakes one to start with. The biggest hurdle is going to be printing and folding and stapling all those paper zines, which is why I capped physical zine rewards at 500.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
