Help me get my albums ‘Teaser Trailer’ and ‘This Is Your Life’ pressed on vinyl. Even better, back this project to allow me to take a massive step towards fulfilling my mission of being a full-time musician so that I can make more music for people like you.
Who am I and what is Adult Cinema?
My name is Mike Weston and I’m a fully DIY rock musician.
I write and record music as a solo project under the name ‘Adult Cinema’ in my self-built studio that I call ‘ACHQ’, and, for a very long time, nobody cared.
I recorded and released a debut album called ‘This Is Your Life’ in 2007 after getting very close to the promise of a record deal with a major label that never came to pass.
Even though the album got a handful of great reviews, almost no-one heard the record at the time. Luckily, as part of my failed dealings with the mainstream music business, I ended up with EMI Music touting my wares and a couple of my songs did find their way onto TV and Movie soundtracks in different parts of the world.
I kept toiling away on my own and kept writing and recording and occasionally someone from some seemingly random part of the world would somehow find me and send an email and rave about a track they’d heard on a show on National Geographic, HBO, Sky or in a movie trailer.
‘Supercool’ from ‘This Is Your Life’ on the trailer for ‘Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead’
It seemed that a handful of people loved the music I was making!
I wasn’t making any money from these few and far between uses of music from that album, but I was starting to think I might be able to do more with my music if only I could reach people and let them discover it.
So, a few years ago, following some heavy persuasion from a couple of old friends, I decided to give it another go and try this new fangled internet thing as a way of reaching music lovers.
And, damn, am I glad I did!
The short story is that I put together another set of tracks as an album called ‘Teaser Trailer’ and gave them away to anyone who was interested.
I took lots of advice and help on how to build a following by promoting my music online and slowly and surely a small group of people began to find me and say very kind things about the music I gave away.
And that pretty much brings us to this Kickstarter campaign….
Why a Kickstarter Campaign?
As I’ve started to build up a small but determined following, I keep getting asked if both my albums are available on vinyl.
And they aren’t.
I’d decided to remaster ‘This Is Your Life and re-release it this year as part of my push to build a sustainable career.
I remastered the album at the end of last year to make sure it sounded as good as it possibly could and this remastered version is going to be on streaming sites and all the digital stores very soon. (By the way, I already owe you my thanks if you bought a ‘Teaser Trailer’ T-shirt. Those funds paid for the new mastering. Thanks!)
With that release about to come out, I thought it would be the right time to see if there’s enough demand for ‘This Is Your Life’ to be pressed on vinyl. And, if it’s good enough for that album, why not ‘Teaser Trailer’ too?
So, if you’ve been asking for either album on vinyl, this Kickstarter campaign is your fault and now’s your chance to make it happen.
If this campaign gets funded, I’ll make both the albums on 180g vinyl, because that’s how it should be done!
I’ll cut the vinyl with the brilliant Nick Watson at Fluid Mastering and we’ll make sure it sounds as good as it possibly can.
That means that you vinyl lovers will get these albums in the format you love and they will sound as good as they possibly can.
As a DIY musician, I just don't have the funds to do this without the backing of people like you, so a platform that allows me to pre-sell the vinyl and to offer rewards to do it as well is a perfect combination.
I also get to do cool things that I wouldn't have done if I was just releasing these albums without asking for help. Kickstarter is the best of both worlds - it's a lot of fun to use as well as being a really practical way to fund this project.
But, is there another reason?
Well, yes...of course.
And this is the most important reason for running this campaign and it applies to you even if you’ve never bought an album on vinyl in your life.
It might sound a little overblown, but my mission in life is to make the music that I can hear in my head.
I have no choice but to write and record music - it’s what inspires me and what gets me out of bed every morning.
Of course, life gets in the way and I’ve spent most of my adult life keeping a roof over the heads of my family and earning a living. Nothing wrong with that, but now that I can see that there’s a way to reach that lifelong goal of being a full time musician and being able to have my music find an audience, I can’t let it lie.
By backing this campaign, you’ll help me take a massive step towards realising that goal. You'll be one of the few who gave me the opportunity at this turning point in my life and made it possible for me to try and become the self sustaining artist that I have worked to become for such a long time.
By having two albums on sale on vinyl (as well as the original CDs) it simply becomes easier for me to keep growing my following and build something that can last.
But I don’t want that to sound as though it’s all about me, because there has to be something in it for you, as well as some lovely vinyl!
Hopefully you’ll know that backing me to achieve what I’m capable of as an artist is as good as any of the rewards on offer in this campaign - fingers crossed!
And, speaking of rewards, let me tell you a little more about those.
What are the Rewards?
The first reward is my heartfelt thanks for helping me on my mission.
I think you get that by now.
So, what are the rewards that you can back?
Well, although the list of rewards is long, that’s only because I’m trying to make sure I’ve covered what people have already asked me for and things that I’ve seen other artists offer on Kickstarter.
First up, if you make a pledge you’ll get a high quality digital download of the remastered ‘This Is Your Life’ and 'Teaser Trailer' albums straightaway - a month or more before it’s released.
On top of that, you pays your money and takes your choice!
You can order either vinyl or both and you can get them signed as well if you’d like. I’ll gladly scribble on them for you!
UPDATE 14/2/18 : Thanks to all the support so far I've rejigged the figures and I can add something that a lot of people have asked for - coloured vinyl on both albums. Yellow for 'Teaser Trailer' and red for 'This Is Your Life' - available unsigned or signed as with the standard 180g black vinyl. Check out the new rewards on the right for these coloured vinyl. If you're backing one of the packs priced over £60 you'll automatically get coloured vinyl unless you want standard!
I’ve decided to have the CDs of both albums in this campaign as rewards so that you can get a full set of signed albums should you like both vinyl and CD.
Then, I’ve noticed the trend for offering ‘Test Pressings’ of vinyl albums on a lot of projects by other artists and since these are limited by nature, I thought I’d offer those as well. If you buy a Test Pressing (signed or unsigned) I’ll send you a standard finished copy as well so that you can keep your Test Pressing pristine and unplayed.
Then there’s a few bundles where you can humour me by buying all the formats and I’ll pop to the local art shop and print out an A2 art print of each album cover and sign it on the back.
There’s one of these ‘Collector’s Packs’ with or without the Test Pressings, and right now, that’s the only way to get these Art Prints.
So, this time around the campaign is all about the music and getting it onto vinyl.
But it’s about you having a way to support me even if you don’t have a turntable and will never play the vinyl. I know there’s a lot of people who will back this who just want to help me on my journey - thanks again.
Adult Cinema Executive Producer Credit
This one is another idea that I’ve seen quite a few artists do on Kickstarter and it’s a nice way for you to have your name linked with your support for my music for all time!
If you’d like me to add your name as an ‘Executive Producer’ in the credits of the vinyl pressing of either ‘Teaser Trailer’ or ‘This Is Your Life’, then simply select the pledge and you’ll be credited on the vinyl of your choice - either ‘Teaser Trailer’ or ‘This Is Your Life’. (Both if you fancy it!)
I’m limiting the Executive Producer credits to only four per album to recognise the extra contribution to my career that a pledge like that means.
Your credit will only be on the vinyl editions of the album, but it will remain in place for any and all future pressings. And I will owe you big time!
Want an Add-On? Here’s How To Do it
Offering ‘Add-Ons’ seems to be a bit of a Kickstarter tradition, so I’ve added this one below.
Add-On T-Shirt + £20.00
Basically an Add-On is an extra reward that you can add to your order just by increasing your pledge as you go to the checkout page.
If you want to add this T-Shirt to your pledge, simply add the amount. The sizing for the T-Shirt gets sorted out after the Kickstarter campaign ends (I’ll email you and you’ll tell me the size you need at that time - it’s called a Kickstarter Survey and it’s how this thing works!).
As with my first ever band T-Shirt this will be on a premium quality T-Shirt, only available in black and with a high quality print. Those who bought the first Adult Cinema T-Shirt can assure you that I’ll only make the best quality merch!
What about a Stretch Goal?
There’s one thing that I could do if this campaign far outperforms my expectations.
I’m not currently able to make a CD of the remastered version of ‘This Is Your Life’.
That’s because there’s nearly 700 copies of the 2007 original CD sitting in boxes in ACHQ and I have to sell those over time! If and when those (possible collector’s editions!!) do sell out, I will make a new CD of the remastered album.
But, I figure that if I set the stretch goal for this campaign at £4500 and, if we get there, I’ll make the CD of the remastered ‘This Is Your Life’. Then everyone who has backed this campaign will get a copy of the original and the remastered version of the album on CD in a specially designed slipcase.
I know that this is a big stretch, but I think it could happen and, if it does, it just about makes this the perfect campaign.
I’ll be doing my utmost to get the rewards manufactured and out to you, provided of course that I reach the goal.
If that happens, here’s the timeline I’ll be doing my best to stick to:
You have my heartfelt thanks for supporting this campaign and helping me in my mission to be a full-time musician making great music.
P.S. If any of you are new to my music, you can check out the 'Teaser Trailer' album below in it's entirety.
Risks and challenges
I’ve done my best to minimise the risks and challenges for this project.
Since both the albums are already recorded and I’ve already done the remastering for ‘This Is Your Life’, there’s really only one risk - that this campaign doesn’t raise all the funds needed to get the vinyl into manufacture!
ALL your pledges will help with this initial outlay for the pressing of vinyl and packaging of both the albums.
Although timelines are often a concern for Kickstarter projects, I’m confident that I’ve carefully prepared for any potential delays, especially as regards the actual manufacturing time of the vinyl. I’ve laid out a realistic manufacturing timeline (see the schedule above) and included extra time to allow for issues that may arise along the way - although hopefully there won’t be any.
Therefore, there are no risks to you as the backer. If I get the funding, you get the album or albums that I’ve promised to you. You also put me in a position to make more new music.
The risk to me is that this campaign might not reach its target. I have put so much passion into creating this music and restarting my career (entirely with the help of people like you) it seems right to make these vinyl releases a beautiful thing to cherish. If I don’t reach the target then these albums will remain solely digital and CD releases at this stage which would be a great shame for those that want them and are looking to help me on my quest to deliver more great rock music for those of us that need it in our lives!
Most importantly, as you’ll know if you’ve ever emailed or messaged me on Facebook, I am committed to open communication. All the backers of this project will be the first to know if anything comes along that may affect this timeline. I am committed to being honest and transparent should any problems or delays occur along the way. I’m fully prepared to make sure this project happens in the stated timeline.
