We are working on a couple of wireless sensor projects for building automation and were exploring opportunities to incorporate more and more of the wireless radios. Around the same time my 3 year old daughter was just learning to switch on / off the TV, Lights etc and would jump at any opportunity to use the switches. Although out of her reach and done under careful supervision we never felt safe about a child using the conventional switch. When the two problems were merged together we found that there was a great opportunity to develop an Ultra safe Switch, which is also Remotely operable and to top it we decided to incorporate the Best in class User Interface. Thus the Touch based Switch with Connectivity - Adora Touch was born.

Our modular enclosure is designed to customize. Users can change the faceplate with ease to suit their wall colors and decor. We are currently producing the Black and the Grey faceplates. Our switches and dimmers are designed for worldwide use. We will build and ship switches according to the geographical preference. For convenience we will call it Portrait (US) and landscape (other places). The pictures and description below will throw more light on how this is accomplished.

The enclosure is designed to mount on a single gang box in US and similar boxes in other places. The mounting frame which houses the complete electronics, with the back cover, is mounted on the Single gang box using the mounting holes provided.The face plate snaps on to the mounting frame. The size of the faceplate is the same as the size of the 1 gang Decora wall plate. Below is a picture of Adoratouch faceplate placed on a Decora Wall plate
Our electronics (circuit boards) are designed and cut to form a perfect square (symmetrical). This enables us to mount the same board either in portrait or landscape mode. Below are pictures of how they are mounted in portrait and landscape
Similarly the boards for the touch switch and the wheel are also mountable on the same frame for portrait and landscape orientations
This design concept helps to use the same enclosure, faceplates and boards for both the portrait and landscape orientation.We have different touch plates (glass with icons) for landscape and portrait.
We have verified that the enclosure mounts on a few different makes of gang boxes. We will further do a detailed testing with as many available gang boxes as possible and accommodate any changes required (more mounting holes) or any other changes required to make it universally usable.
We will release the final dimensions after this test and accommodating any changes required.
To achieve the touch based interface, capacitive touch is the way to go. In a nut shell our keys continuously measure the ambient capacitance and a touch is detected when there is a change in capacitance. With some market research we figured that there is a need for switches which can be used individually or in combination with several switches. We also found that the dimming is also a very desired feature both for lights and fans. All this meant that we needed a micro controller powerful enough to achieve all these features along with being small enough to have a modular design.
Since we needed a powerful controller for the touch and connectivity we stretched a little bit to accommodate a host of power saving features and incorporated the Timer, Light Sensor, Door Bell, Motion sensor along with connectivity using WiFi / Zigbee / Zwave. Connectivity is achieved using an external module along with the main controller. This modular design helps us cook several fantastic variants of the products using a few basic ingredients.
To add the icing on the cake we came up with a customizable modular enclosure where the faceplate can be changed to suit the users wall color and decor.

We have 3 basic hardware platforms, the Switch, Slider and the Wheel (Dimmers). Each of these is a sandwich of 2 boards. We have been through several iterations of the switch and the sliders. The Wheel which was developed after some lessons learnt from the switch and the slider has been through one iteration with satisfactory results. The Wheel which is similar in functionality to the slider was a later addition which incorporated the lessons learnt from the switch and the slider. This first version just works great.

Universal Power Supply
An Universal power supply was developed to power the switches. This works either on 230V AC / 50 Hz or on 110VAC / 60 Hz. This is designed to withstand wide voltage fluctuations, noise & to consume minimum power even under no load conditions.
Firmware development is one of our key strengths. Firmware for all the switches and dimmers are functional, Due to the common hardware a good portion of the software is also reused across variants.
We used an off the shelf switch panel and boxes to assemble the prototypes. The switch / slider / wheel hardware fits on commonly available switch panel. The panel along with the boards is glued to a piece of glass or acrylic panel which has an appropriate icon printed on it. The icon is aligned in line with the LED providing back light on the touch board. When the LED lights up it illuminates the icon giving an elegant appearance
We have designed a modular enclosure which can accommodate multiple combination of switches and dimmers with a customizable faceplate. We got a 3D printed model of the same. Below are some snaphots of the CAD and the 3D prototype
We have developed an intuitive Android app for the connected switches. Monitor and Control anything, anywhere at anytime. Create, save and retrieve different scenarios to suit your mood and comfort.

Right from a concept we have designed, manufactured and tested multiple versions of the switches and variants. A lot of improvements and fine tuning has gone to the latest version. Currently our switch and dimmer is a sandwich of 2 boards plus a power supply. In the next version we plan to develop a 2 board solution including the power supply. This will help us further separate the low voltage touch electronics and the high voltage switching circuitry where all the dimming and power control is done.
We plan to use these next version of boards for a wide variety of testing and validation
We currently have a fully functional software for the different variants of the switches. In the next version we will incorporate several features to further reduce power consumption, several diagnostic functions, incorporate feedback from user and field testing, facility to do factory testing and calibration etc. These changes will be incorporated before shipping the rewards.
Samrt Phone App
We have an Alpha version of the Android app. We are adding a whole lot of features and customization options to the smart phone app.
Work is in progress for developing an app for iOS and windows. We plan to release the first version of the iOS and the windows equivalent of the Android app before shipping the connected switches and dimmers.
We are passionate about developing a superior product, continuously measure and improve consumer satisfaction. To achieve this we will leave no stone un-turned during testing. We plan to produce a good number (a few hundreds) of these switches and subject them to a wide variety of testing. Below is a small list of the testing planned
The main goal of the testing is to push the product to the edge, check its breaking point and fix / improvise until all known issues are resolved. We have scheduled 14 weeks for testing the switches before mass production.
All the products will be certified by UL, FCC before delivery. In the next phase we will get it tested to comply with CE and other international standards
Although we have many variants of switches we have designed them to reuse the same core components. In most cases just the PCB and the software are different. This helps us with managing the logistics and procure components at an increased quantity translating to a better price
Hardware: We have finalized our suppliers for all the critical components. This vendor has a global presence and can help us with supply and support of the parts just in time .
PCB: We have been working with a PCB supplier for a while, for all our prototypes and other projects. They have worked with us through the development cycle and we plan to continue with them for production. Located about 30 miles from Bangalore, India, they are fully equipped to produce good quality PCBs and have a long track record of supplying PCBs globally.
Plastics: We are working with a plastic parts manufacturing unit based out of Bangalore, India. They are a major supplier for a wide range of Automobile OEMs and other electronic goods. Their knowledge, experience and inputs have helped us design the 3D model. We plan to get the tools developed by this vendor and also source the production parts from them.
EMS: We are currently using an EMS service in Bangalore, which supports low volume builds. They can support up to a few thousand switches every month. We will continue with them for the initial production. They offer a complete one stop shop form procurement, assembly to packaging under one roof.
We have identified another EMS provider in Taiwan for greater volumes and better pricing. The plan is to switch over to the Taiwanese EMS as soon as the volume ramps up or for high volume switches.
Tools: Our plastic vendor is a reputed toolmaker with a number of successful products. We have the pricing and other commercial information to proceed further. Proceeds from Kickstarter will help us kick start this activity to a great extent
Test Equipment: We have planned for an End of Line Tester which does a complete functional testing of the mass produced products before it is shipped out. Kickstarter will give us a big boost to speed up the process of completing this test equipment.
Quality: We are planning on hiring a Senior Quality Engineer who can help us develop and implement a thorough quality control process, at every stage of manufacturing. Every part, assembly and the final product will have to pass through several check points before it is shipped to the customer.

Electrical Switches are subject to adverse electrical conditions caused by a wide variety of equipment in the real world. The Touch switch is a very sensitive touch sensor, yet has to resilient to all the electric noise. Our initial tests show that they are very stable when deployed in the field. However we have to field test a reasonable sample in a wide range of test locations and applications. Challenge is to thoroughly test the switches for all kinds of environments and resolve any possible malfunction. Our test plan is very intense and we will leave no stone un-turned to produce a world class product.
Building a product from concept to mass production is a huge challenge.
We have a wide range of products and building small quantities of several will be a difficult job logistically. To mitigate this risk we have designed modular boards which will be repeatedly used in different combinations to produce the different variants.

Yes, Adoratouch is designed to work from less than 100 Volts AC to more than 280 Volts AC or anything in between, 47 or 60 Hertz. It is designed to work anywhere in the world.
Our enclosure, electronics, faceplate, touch icon are designed in such a way that they can be built in a Landscape (shorter edge vertical) or portrait (longer edge vertical) mode. We have multiple mounting holes, paired such that the switch can be mounted on all types of gang boxes anywhere in the world.
We will verify the mounting with available types of gang boxes (also called switch boxes in some places), make any necessary changes in the design and release the dimensions.
Yes, Dimmers can drive either a fan or dim a bulb.
