Starting in January of 2014, artist and queer rights advocate Nic Adenau will journey across the West Coast and share the stories of 20 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender bullied teens. The project is titled “20” and it documents the experiences of 20 LGBT youth across the West Coast through the mediums of photography and verbal interviews. The final products will be a website and an art book. The website will be a virtual space for LGBT and straight youth, as well as parents and school administrators, to understand and empathize with the everyday lives and challenges of LGBT youth. It will also be a place for bullied teens to identify with others and realize they are not alone in their challenges. After the website is launched, the art book will be released featuring photos from the process. All proceeds from the book will be donated to combat teen bullying.
Note: All Kickstarter funding will go towards camera equipment, film, train tickets, plane tickets, hotels, meals, webspace, and web design. Only proceeds from the art book, produced after the project, will be donated to combat LGBT youth bullying.
Art Book: The Kickstarter funds raised will go towards the website not the art book. The art book will available through self publishing services so the set up fees are virtually free. However, the funds will go towards the support the film and equippment which essentially supports the production of the art book. The book will be available as a reward in August!
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk I see having to overcome during my project is finding participants who feel comfortable sharing their story. However, over the past 3 years I have built a network of LGBT organizations and advocates through my last LGBT project (which I funded successfully on Kickstarter and found 21 participants for). I am confident that with the connections I have made, I will find 20 participants to fulfill a successful project!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
