Animals Eat Their Veggies Too! is a whimsical rhyming children's picture book. It aims to make vegetables fun, and a normal part of a child's everyday diet, through imaginative story and humorous animal illustrations.
One evening a little boy named Harry is playing and pretending to be a lion before dinner time. His mummy calls him to come eat a meal of vegetables which his daddy has cooked. But Harry only wants to eat meat like a lion. So his mum and dad think up a story about which animals like to eat their vegetables, hoping to encourage Harry to not only eat his veggies but enjoy them too.
My name is Adele K. Thomas and I'm an Australian based illustrator working mainly in animation production and children's books. I have provided animation and design for production companies including Cartoon Network, Nelvana and Working Dog and illustrated books for Pearson Education and Murdoch Books Australia.
As a child I was brought up as a pescatarian - someone who only eats fish and vegetables - until the age of twelve. Although now I have some additional meat in my diet (like chicken), I do not find it hard to return to a vegetable based diet due to my upbringing - one of the reasons which lead me to write this book.
I have been working on Animals Eat Their Veggies Too! on and off for about four years around my work, and during that time I have researched the publishing options. Self publishing is the easiest route for authors and illustrators to have their work out in the world. It can take a long time just to get someone at a publishing house to glance at your story, or even receive a reply from them. Working as a children's book illustrator is not an open door to publishers.
Instead of prolonging my finished book even further, I am using a crowd funding campaign to self publish Animals Eat Their Veggies Too!
Collected funds would help with:
- Book printing, need to meet the bulk minimum order amount.
- Shipping requirements (postage, packaging, labeling etc)
- Getting Animals Eat Their Veggies Too! out into the children's book world and creating longevity after the crowdfunding campaign.
- Self Publishing packages which include ISBN registration, listing within libraries and ongoing promotion by the publishing company.
The book is complete, so there will be no funds required for further production of the book in regards to art or writing. Layout may have to change slightly depending on the publishing company's specifications.
At $6600: Stickers added to all backer pledges over $23 (Baked Potato).
What is the target age for Animals Eat Their Veggies Too?
This book is aimed for preschool and early primary/elementary school, ages 3-8 years old, but I completely welcome adults to buy it if they would like to look at some quirky illustrations, or buy it as a gift for their friends or family members.
Is this all your own work?
Yes, all the story and images are written and illustrated by myself. I worked on the book in my spare time.
Where are you getting the book published?
This all depends on how much I managed to raise (if I meet my target amount), as different self publishing companies have different minimum bulk order amounts.
Will the book look like the book in the video and photos?
This is a dummy copy I had printed through Blurb. The final look will depend on the amount of funds I manage to raise, The layout, paper quality and cover colour will vary between self publishing companies.
Can we have our name in the acknowledgements?
All backers have the opportunity to have their name as a “thank you” in the Acknowledgements. Should I meet my goal amount, I will send out a survey asking for the name to be printed into the book. I will only be accepting real names; no alias, fake names, email addresses, profanities or fictional character names. It can be your name, your child's name, your family member's names, those who you are giving the book to as a gift.
Why is the Potato Gem Three Book Reward only for Australians? The shipping costs from Australia to worldwide is far too expensive. I recommend the two book option (Mashed Potato) for international backers.
Risks and challenges
The book is complete and only has to be layed out and printed.
This is my first time crowd funding and self publishing, so there are a lot of challenges ahead. Please be patient with me and I accept all words of encouragement and advice if you have them. Thankfully I have had some advice from some artist friends who have had their own successful crowd funding projects.
I have chosen a reasonable approximate delivery date. It might seem quite far away but this is to allow time to choose the right publishing company, the book laid out correctly and all rewards to be completed. Anyone choosing the Roasted Potatoes reward level must allow additional time for the artwork to be created.
In regards to shipping costs, I have checked with our postal service within Australia and based on approximate size and weight, these are the quotes that have come back to me and sadly there is nothing I can do to make it more affordable.
Please help spread the word and get as many people to see my project. If you know someone with children that might like this book, let them know about it or fund on their behalf.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
