Despite being the best leaders and designers I know, many women in my network lack the highly toned self-promotion muscles of their cis-male counterparts. So I chose to thank them, publicly on Twitter, in a year-long series of tweets under the hashtag #ADaysNotEnough.
This is the book of that series. It features talented and passionate leaders, thinkers and practitioners from across service design, product management, user research, org design, transformation, corporate strategy, and more. Everyone included has in some way influenced who I am, how I think or inspired me in some way to be better.
I’d like to publish it for the many people who asked me to - because they want a copy for their intern, for the students just starting on their degree, or for the bookshelf in their design studio.
The smallest print run I can run is for 250 books - so I'm asking backers to pledge money, in return for a copy of the book, in order to fund the printing costs. This will not be profit-making, any extra books will be gifted to design students.
This is quite literally the print version of the #ADaysNotEnough series of tweets about awesome women influencing folks like me. So it is a compilation of images of said women, and the tweet about them in the series. I’ve also written a short back-story to the project and shared a few interesting observations from the project.
Cat Drew very generously designed the prototype for me. The dimensions of the current prototype are 120mm x 154mm x 4mm. It is perfect bound with lovely thick off-white sheets with a colour photos and pistachio-coloured inserts to help you navigate the book.
The prototype only includes 30 women - the final version will contain 10x as many pages so will be much, much more substantial than in the video. I think adding the extra pages, at their current width, will make browsing through it a tad fiddly, so we'll probably make the pages wider. Perhaps it’ll end up square? We'll let you know about any changes we make through project updates.
Thanks - Want to support the project but not fussed about getting a book? Instead you'll have thanks from me for helping raise the profile of these amazing women, and you'll receive project updates.
Book collection - If you can collect the book in person at our launch event, select this option. You'll get a print copy of the book and an invite to the #ADaysNotEnough launch event - but you won't have to pay any shipping costs.
Book + shipping - We'll post you a print copy of the book once it has been printed - Kickstarter will add shipping costs to your pledge.
Book + shipping + helping the next generation - As well as a copy of the book, the invite, and some neat #ADaysNotEnough stickers, you'll get warm fuzzy feelings knowing that you’re supporting the next generation of women at the start of their career in design. Some of the amazing women featured in this book have promised, if this book gets funded, to give their time and energy to support young women designers.
Supporting the next generation: pledges for the book
- From Francesca Allen - (Her)story posters to show how women are driving service design
- #ADayIsNotEnough for uni design briefs showing influencing for social good
- From Joanna Choukier - a lean-in circle session with experienced designers networking with students
- From Cat and Gemma - a Data Outliers group session focused on support students and early-career designers
- From Lauren Currie - a session for young designers wanting to build their public speaking skills
Get in touch if you'd like to make a pledge here too.
When will you receive your rewards? The book is written, obviously, as we’ve reached International Women’s Day 2019. But it's a time-consuming process getting consent and high-res images from everyone featured. We’re hoping to have this finished by the end of the Kickstarter campaign. I’d like to to have all the proofing, printing, binding, inspecting and packing done in time to send out before June. If we’re done sooner, I’ll send them sooner.
If you've selected one of the options that includes shipping, then Kickstarter will add the cost of shipping to your pledge based on where you live.
In some countries customs duties may be applied to print shipments. I have no way of predicting if they’ll apply to yours - customs inspections seem rather arbitrarily applied and most shipments slide through without any extra duties. A few of you may find a customs fee has been slapped on - sorry, there’s nothing I can do to predict or avoid it. Also - we may or may not have Brexit-chaos at the UK border by the time we come to ship. If you want to back the project and have me ship later in the year - once the whole customs mess has been untangled, I’ll happily do that.
Updates and progress reports.
Sponsors of this project will receive periodic updates through Kickstarter as the project unfolds, but not so much that you feel like I’m spamming you. If you feel I’ve got the balance wrong, let me know.
Questions? Send me your questions and if I know the answer I’ll add the question and answer to the FAQ section of this project page.
Risks and challenges
Let's be honest, this is quite a niche offering - it's entirely possible that we won't get to 250 backers. If we get to something near 250 I can probably cover the shortfall myself, but if we're miles away than we'll switch to a different model. We've got Amazon's print-on-demand service in mind as our contingency plan - the books would cost nearer to £30, but you'd be able to order them as singles.
What else? Consents and images - I want to get consent and a high resolution image for each person in the book. I'd like to try and get 365 women in here, so as a contingency I've tweeted a few more than 365 so that some can decline without it dropping below 365. I'll hit publish as soon as we've heard from everyone, or as soon as we hit 365, whichever is sooner. I won't let it go past mid-May without us hitting print, so if at that point I have to drop it to 340, then so be it.
Finally - Brexit. It's a wild card. Besides shipping outside of the UK, there aren't any obvious risks. But if the printer hasn't stockpiled ink and paper, or if the packaging company is shipping the packing materials from Europe, then I might need to respond quickly.
I'll keep you informed via project updates. I'm not expecting any problems though.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
