Finally a breakthrough!

Dear Friends and Backers,

My sincere apologies for disappearing off the face of the earth for the better part of a  month! Due to very unfortunate circumstances that materialized in October, Adapteva as a company and the whole Parallella project were suddenly in a very critical condition. For entirely non-technical reasons, the whole manufacturing pipeline was completely stuck and we were not able to ship the first 200 boards by November 15th as promised.

We still can't disclose anything concrete but I can say that we'll make a major announcement next week and that the Parallella project is 100% safely back on track!!!

Below you will find a detailed schedule of the delivery and post milestones going forward.

Delivery schedule:

  • December 2nd:   200 Parallella PCB boards back from factory
  • December 11th:  Assembled boards back from contract manufacturer
  • December 15th:  Send out ~200 boards to backers
  • January 1st:        All PCB fabs back
  • January 31st:      All boards shipped to backers

Kickstarter Post Updates:

  • December 4th:    Picture of the new fabs
  • December 6th:    "Announcement"
  • December 15th:  "Live" fully featured Parallella demo bringup video
  • January 1st:        Fab delivery post
  • January 8-31:      Weekly shipping status updates

It has been fifteen months of virtually uninterrupted work since we started the Parallella project but we now have our second wind and are ready to sprint to the finish!

Sincerely,

Andreas

The good news is that the new boards are on schedule and will arrive tomorrow.

The big "announcement" has been delayed by a few more days, unfortunately the timing is largely out of our control...

    2. Creator Chris Naeger on December 9, 2013

Did I miss the "major announcement" of Dec 6th ... or are we once again behind schedule?

    3. Creator Michael Hewson (deleted) on December 4, 2013

Oh yeah, those cases look way cool ! :-)

For those of us who ordered cases, they're looking pretty sharp :) Nice!

Thanks, and glad to hear things are back on track! You've taken on a big project, not for the faint of heart. As they say, "pioneers catch all the arrows" :) Hang in there ... you have a lot of fans rooting for you at the finish line. Looking forward to checking out the finished product.

    6. Creator Kurtis Mullins on November 27, 2013

Thanks for the update! Keep this up and I'll be happy for a while :)

    7. Creator James Kennedy on November 26, 2013

my mom used to say, "better late than never!" I'm keeping the faith; you will help make my new year happy! peace and god speed!

    8. Creator Paul D on November 26, 2013

Great to hear things are back on track. You're attempting to achieve incredible things on an amazingly small budget, so I think hiccups were to be expected, whatever their form. You have my full support and I look forward to receiving my Parallela when it is ready.

    9. Creator Adapteva on November 26, 2013

@Brooks, @Paul: A small number of the "high rollers" will get preference to the access boards but the majority of the boards will ship by backer number. Check your backer number from the email survey in September. If it's <200 or less you have a good chance of getting a board in a few weeks. Many of the $499 pledges received the early version Gen0 board back in July.

Thanks for the kind words and continued patience! We'll work hard to prove to you and everyone else that we are back on track over the next couple of weeks. We really can't wait for the day when everyone opens up their boxes and powers up the board.

    11. Creator Patrick Siegl on November 26, 2013

@PaulTsai: I would also like to see a new survey, because I will move too ...

    12. Creator Daniele Tesema on November 26, 2013

Thanks for your commitment and dedication, It worth every bit of the wait to get a piece of technology on my hand. until then, my ZedBoard will do.

    13. Creator Jon Nebenfuhr on November 26, 2013

It's cool. I have other boards to play with until you guys get back on track. Cheers!

    14. Creator Brooks Moses on November 26, 2013

Paul Tsai: I had thought the 200 boards that would be shipped out first were the ones from the $499-and-above pledges that mention a "limited early version Epiphany-III based Parallella board" -- but I only see about 80 backers for those. Perhaps I'm missing something....

    15. Creator Gregor Wilson on November 26, 2013

@PaulTasai - same - a new survey is required for sure.

    16. Creator Paul Tsai on November 26, 2013

I just remembered, my lease is up the 31rst and I'll be moving, will they send out another survey?

    17. Creator fmotta on November 26, 2013

@Will Rempel: I have backed a few that were on time and even early.
@Adapteva: I'm glad to see that you have found the resources to set schedules again. The manufacture of an SoC can be expensive and challenging when you have the money and the team on-hand. I've been involved in several in the past. Luckily, this SoC is not really complex so timing closure and yield are probably not a major part of the challenge.

    18. Creator Alessandro Barracane on November 26, 2013

Parallela is a great idea, with a potential wide market, hope in a long life project.
Appreciate the update, I'm looking forward to the new year, but who will receive the first 200 boards?

    19. Creator Paul Tsai on November 26, 2013

I'm a bit confused, which 200 backers will get the boards first?

    20. Creator Willy Rempel on November 26, 2013

Hofstadter's Law on all engineering Kickstarter's. Guaranteed. The biodiesel one I backed is over a year late. Show me one that's on time.

Thanks for the update, keep on going guys!

    21. Creator Adapteva on November 26, 2013

Case is ready - will ship with the boards

    22. Creator Nathan Malinoski on November 26, 2013

      Any news on the cases?

    23. Creator Vidya B on November 26, 2013

      Great news.

    24. Creator renepilz on November 26, 2013

      Thanks for that update.
I guess, thats a good point to see, that Kickstarter is Risk-Capital. We (Backers) can get a reward, if anything goes well, but it is not a must. There can be (and will be) risks.

But for now, I'm happy to see that Adepteva made it "back".
So, I'm looking forward to get mine at Jannuary (or sometime around that).

    25. Creator Dacian Herbei on November 26, 2013

i guess I'm the only one dark around here... but is one year later... now the only thing missing is a take over and a burying of this high potential technology like they did with alpha... and of course never get back the money invested...
But you can always change my mood if I get the board :)

    26. Creator Symonty on November 26, 2013

Appreciate the update, and good luck. Looking forward to moving forward on new projects on this platform.

    27. Creator Mike Field on November 26, 2013

      This is great news.

Thanks for the update - I'm looking forward to the new year when I get my new board.

    28. Creator Evgueni Baldin on November 26, 2013

      Good news.

During this year I wrote as coauthor series of articles about Parallel programming for russian Linux Format. A week ago I put them with permission of the publisher in open access (only russian): http://www.inp.nsk.su/~baldin/Parallel/

There is an mini-interview about Parallella with Roman Trogan in the first article of series. So I wait Parallella board to write the next article :)

    29. Creator Michael Hewson (deleted) on November 26, 2013

Jeez Louise ! I honestly thought you'd gone belly up .... or AWOL .... is my face red, fortunately. :-) :-)

      Great Cheers, Mike

Good news. Can't wait for it.

    32. Creator Fedor Rusak on November 26, 2013

      Great news!

Thank you for your updates! They are like a breath of fresh air in our parallella-motivation. And as one of backers said in forums - I hope you have good health, because it is more important for you and family than any project.

We count on you and wait for you cool boards to experiment!
      Best regards,
      Fedor

    33. Creator Andrew Clausen on November 26, 2013

Glad to hear it! Well, not glad to hear that something happened, but glad to hear that you overcame it! I work for a technical company too, even though we are small we are still not immune from the occasional and terrifying hiccup. Cant wait for the live demonstration!

    34. Creator Roberto Arias on November 26, 2013

      God first!
