We launched the Adaptalux Studio here on Kickstarter in 2015, raising over £107,000. The Adaptalux Studio is a fully adaptable and modular design, allowing you to create thousands of different combinations of Lighting Environments.
Adaptalux Studio allows you to easily control the following lighting characteristics all under one product:-
- LED & Xenon Flash Lighting
- Number of light sources
- Independent light source brightness control
- Beam angle control
- Light source colour
- Light source direction
- App Control
The Flash arms expand upon this system, opening up the system to photographers who would also like to use flash as well as continuous lighting.

The Adaptalux Flash Arms have been designed and developed in tandem with the Adaptalux Studio. They work in harmony with our existing products and are backwards compatible with all of our pods. The Adaptalux Studio is now not only the most adaptable LED studio for macro photography, but also the most adaptable Flash studio as well.
The Flash Arms have 5 output levels, which control the power and speed of the flash. Each arm can be controlled independently from the Pod or the app. Select from full 1:1 to 1:100 flash output modes, allowing you to capture those fast moving subjects. You can also turn off any connected Lighting Arms independently, if you only want to fire on one side of a subject for example.

The Flash Arms have been designed to work seamlessly with the Adaptalux Pod. This means the Flash arms can be independently controlled remotely using the Adaptalux app, available on iOS and Android. Wireless bluetooth control is perfect for when you don't want to interfere with a lighting set-up, disturb a subject or your composition or just would like that fine element of control.
Use the App to independently control the speed of each connected Flash Arm by simply adjusting the slider. You can also simultaneously control any other connected Adaptalux Lighting Arms at the same time. Watch the video below as Sam shows how the app control works with the Flash Arms.
The Flash Arms are fully adaptable just like all of our Lighting Arms. Our Flash Arms have fully adjustable light direction control due to our flexible arm design. This means you can freeze motion with extreme accuracy as each Flash Lighting Arm can be positioned exactly where you need it to achieve ultimate control.
The Adaptalux Flash Arms can re-charge in 0.2 seconds at its fastest output! This ensures the Flash Arms are always ready to fire, ensuring you to never miss a unique shot.
We have designed and incorporated intelligent battery saving software into our Flash Lighting Arms. Therefore the arms will only charge when required, saving the battery life in the Pod and giving a battery life of up to 18 hours on 1 charge. The Arms can also be directly powered via USB cable through the Pod. There is also a discharge button, which fully discharges the Arms when no longer in use.
A key goal of ours was to make the Flash Lighting Arms open to not just new customers, but all of our existing customers as well. Therefore, our Flash Lighting Arms work with all versions of the Pod since we launched on Kickstarter in 2015. We always try to design and manufacture products that are compatible with existing products for the studio.
The Pod 1.0 has output level 1 available, which is a general all round macro flash. The Pod 2.0 has all 5 output levels available for selection. Both Pods have bluetooth control for the Flash Arms.
The Flash arms are triggered using InfraRed light. Our Flash Arms are designed for macro photography, therefore long range is not a high concern and IR is very reliable when used over shorter distances, making it an ideal solution for close-up photography work.
The Flash Arms fully integrate into the Adaptalux studio system, so they can be used alongside all of our current Lighting Arms and products. This means you can use White Lighting Arms as pilot lights for example, or add subtle hints of colour to the edges of the image using coloured Lighting Arms. The only limit is your imagination.
Add an assortment of provided colour gels and diffusers to the Flash arms. Simply push on to add and pull off to remove. Each Flash Arm pack comes with a set of 9 filters. Take your creativity to the next level.
The Flash Arms can be mounted to a camera, tripod, stabiliser and just about any photography equipment you can think of with a standard 1/4 - 20" thread!

The Adaptalux IR emitter has been designed as an extension to the Control Pod, which can reliably trigger the Flash Lighting Arms whilst having the studio mounted above it. It emits a powerful burst of IR light when your camera's shutter is released, which is synchronised to work effortlessly with our Flash Arms.

Extra low power consumption means our IR emitter can be powered by just 2 x AAAA batteries. These give a battery life of over 4 days continuous use. The batteries are easily replaceable by simply removing the battery flap. There is a on/off power button located at the rear.
Our IR emitter will fit and work with any standardised camera hot shoe. Standardised hot shoes are used on 95% of cameras today. It's easy to attach and secure to your camera.
Designed to compliment the Adaptalux Studio Pod, the IR emitter fits neatly underneath and acts as an extension. This means it can be secured to the camera alongside the Pod so the Adaptalux studio can be used on camera with the Flash Arms.
If you would like to add any of our colour filters or diffusers to any pack based rewards. Please add £10/$12/€11 to your pledge award per filter. We will send a survey out at the end of the campaign to ask you which colours you would like with your pack.
Sam pours his passion for Photography and Product Design into all of the Adaptalux products. The Flash Arms were actually highly requested by backers during the 2015 campaign, and Sam started developing them in early 2018.
The software and electronics were fundamental to making the Flash Lighting Arms a desirable product. Sam has worked tirelessly developing these aspects from scratch to ensure they are backwards compatible and work seamlessly with the rest of the Adaptalux Studio products. It is a core belief that both new and existing Adaptalux users can use the Flash arms alongside their existing kit.
Our Flash Lighting Arms are made out of premium materials, which are durable and strong. Based on our existing core Lighting Arm design, the Flash arms share all of the same high quality standards that we adhere to.
We use aerospace grade aluminium for all of our metal parts, which are then anodised to make them scratch and corrosion resistant. This means we can manufacture light weight parts that are extremely durable in all environments.
The flash housing has been designed to be super strong and safe by utilising Polycarbonate, which is reinforced with carbon fibres. This makes for an extremely strong plastic housing, which looks and feels good.
Daylight filtering polycarbonate has been used for the bottom casing of the Flash Arm and IR emitter. This optimises the products to let invisible IR light through to ensure a reliable triggering system, but blocks out any nuisance daylight and other visible light sources.
Our Lighting Arm gooseneck is made out of spring steel and aluminium. We work hard with our suppliers to make the gooseneck feel natural to move and hold its position in any shape. Our gooseneck is coated in a unique coating to make it silky smooth when been bent into a shape and finally it is also coated in a special silicone, giving it a dynamic and tactile feel. Our Lighting Arms are rated to last over 200,000 bending cycles.
Adaptalux was founded by inventor Sam Granger and brought to life in 2015 on Kickstarter by 540 backers. Adaptalux Studio was then developed and launched, making creative and truly adaptable macro lighting available to everyone. Since then we have continued to improve and develop the final product and we have also added new products, to give even more lighting options to our users. Our products are now in every corner of the world.
We also exhibit at the Photography Show in Birmingham NEC every year. Our stand is always extremely busy and we often get comments about having the "most interesting and useful" products there!
The Flash arms are a major product release for us, making the Adaptalux Studio accessible to both the continuous lighting and flash photography markets. For such a release, we believe our roots, Kickstarter, is the best place for us to reach out again to the photography community.
Our dream is to make macro photography lighting easy to use and adaptable for everyone. The Adaptalux Studio achieves this dream and by opening it up to the flash market, it allows for even more lighting options and makes it more accessible to even more photographers.

Risks and challenges
We are aware of the many challenges surrounding Kickstarter campaigns. We have 3 fully funded campaigns under our belts since 2015, when Sam launched the original Adaptalux Studio campaign.
Our first Kickstarter campaign came with many learning curves, which we feel we have learnt and grown from hugely. We are well rehearsed with the processes involved after a Kickstarter campaign. If problems do occur, we will use our experience to make the right decision to ensure you ultimately end up with a high quality product.
To date, we have now delivered over 2,500 Adaptalux Studio's to customers all over the world. The Flash Lighting Arms are based on the core Lighting Arm design we use today. All of these parts and assemblies are well established in our production line and we manufacture over 9,000 Lighting Arms a year.
We will have to scale this up again after the success of this campaign. We have 5+ year relationships with our suppliers and they are already on standby to work with us to bring this product to you.
The Flash Arms have already been vigorously tested and refined during the design and testing process, and further work and testing will continue during and after the campaign. We will make small batches as soon as possible, to test the Flash arms further. After more testing we will then ensure the Flash Arms and IR emitter fully comply to all FCC, CE, RoHS and FDA safety certification standards. We do have some further IR testing to do for IR emitter and we plan to optimise it even further, for smooth and reliable triggering of the Flash Lighting Arms.
