About this project
Importango is Brookyln's tango band. Now, for the first time, we are recording a full-length album of our distinctive music.
Our trio was born to host the weekly event 'Tango Thursdays' at the amazing Pane e Vino in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. It’s been an incredible three years during which we’ve formed a strong musical personality and a bond with our fans. Now we are finally listening to what they’ve been telling us all along: 'make an album!'
Real tango with a personal touch
The album will feature the traditional Argentine music we play for our fans every week - arrangements of tango standards plus original tangos with our own stamp.
We will record the music in one of the best studios in New York City and release the album next spring.
Participate and we’ll reward you
When you contribute, you will receive such awards as:
• recorded interviews with band members along with high quality video portraits
• signed scores of original music from the album
• a stylish button commemorating the album
• the album itself
• and more!
Check out our pledge options for more detail.
Thanks for being a part of this fantastic project! We look forward to seeing you on Thursdays at Pane e Vino.
About Importango: We are dedicated to importing the essence of tango music from its origin in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Brooklyn and beyond – along with tango’s rich culture, poetry, dance, and history.
Not unlike the champions of 'slow food,' our mission is to import pure, genuine, high-quality tango material, because we think audiences deserve nothing less.
All too often, tango music is oversimplified and stripped of its subtlety, richness, and context. In our experience, this fast-food version of the genre, called ‘Tourist Tango’ or 'Tango for Export' can’t compare with the authentic, musically rich and diverse genre so beloved in Buenos Aires. Our job is to bring you ‘Tango for Import,’ the real stuff…Importango.
We work to create an atmosphere of culture and interaction at Tango Thursdays, our weekly live event. We dig deep into the history of composers. We share the stage with our musical colleagues. Our friends dance, and our friends sing.
Most of all, our cultural family - musicians, dancers, drinkers, philosophers, talkers - creates the ritual, the atmosphere, and the spirit that comes alive week after week. You make us whole, you give us life, and now we are giving back.
Who We Are
In the midst of this cultural experiment, with our love of a rich musical tradition from a faraway place and time, Importango has developed a unique identity.
Tango brought us together from three countries (Japan, Argentina, the United States) to live and perform in New York. Because we believe that music is a living, breathing thing, we open up and combine our personalities and backgrounds in order to create music that is honest, unique and compelling, but is rooted in a language formed generations ago in a far away place.
The result is Importango, Brooklyn’s tango band.
Machiko Ozawa, violin (Japan)
Octavio Brunetti, piano (Argentina)
Adam Tully, guitar (United States)
