What is 'Smash/Cut'?
Smash/Cut is a sound-art podcast that produces audiodramas, soundscapes, and other sonic treats for the public at no cost with the purpose of exploring new methods of creating sonic-specific storytelling. With every episode, the team works to find a new perspective--either in production or with the topic of the actual story--in how we compose and release these stories. We've created a drama set within a dating app, the sonic manifestation of inkblots, a tribute to the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting, a drama out of real voicemails, and much more. We want to explore more storytelling modes and devices while providing you with interesting and unheard stories from the underground of podcasting.

What Am I Supporting?
This campaign is to help us upgrade our equipment (as we currently record everything on one Zoom H5) and provide us with a fund to pay writers, give honorariums to actors, and cover what we've spent on making the past two season and miniseries. Those costs where website hosting, first equipment, software, bus tickets, and business cards. If we can close this gap and get to our goal, we can approach more artists in different communities with financial backing for them to work with us. This is crucial to our growth and the exposure of our audience to stories other than our own.
Why Support the Audio Resistance?
Our present and future are in jeopardy. We are all kind of being torn apart or smashed in too tight to be comfortable and explore. For two years we have created pieces that challenged the failure to communicate, that challenged ourselves to create new ways to express our values, and challenged you—yes you—to come with us. Now, we must ask you to join us. We are Smash/Cut and we are joining the resistance. We are resisting one-sided conversations, a lack of diversity, single- interest diplomacy, and—above all—the idea that we must hate each other to disagree.
Why Support Now?
Smash/Cut has run on a platform of reinvention and experimentation for two seasons. The podcast received support via recording space and equipment from various institutions. However, for this upcoming year, we are working independently to create a season of audiodramas and sonic art on resistance, subversion, and "going underground" to reflect our current political moment (from all perspectives).
Who Makes 'Smash/Cut'?
Well, we must be a little careful, shouldn't we? Of course, you could go to smashcutthepodcast.com to find out.
Risks and challenges
In moving forward, we have come to find it difficult to recruit volunteer actors, rent equipment, and freely distribute our work all while keeping in our high standard for excellence in quality. With the money to pay actors, buy equipment, and advertise the podcast, these challenges would be replaced with new, more exciting ones. With the success of this kickstarter we could then look forward to asking exciting questions like, what will we do next to keep the show relevant and unique? Without the help of backers, this challenge, one we'd very much like to tackle, might not exist.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
