We have entered into a new paradigm of what is technologically possible with the internet and the advent of BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY.
Follow My Vote is pioneering Blockchain Technology by developing the world's first open-source end-to-end verifiable blockchain-based voting system for use in elections worldwide.
Since the dawn of democracy, elections throughout the world have been plagued with accusations of illegitimacy. As democratic societies across the globe are beginning to adopt technology to improve the efficiency of the election process, many people are discovering that certain types of technology can be extremely vulnerable, which may have the potential to unfairly influence the outcome of elections.
Although many people remain unaware, one should know that Blockchain Technology exists, and it has the ability to solve both of these critical issues:
1) lack of transparency in our elections
2) lack of security of our election systems
Using Blockchain Technology, we will be able to gain transparency into our elections, without compromising voter privacy, to ensure that our election results are accurate.
Let’s face it. It's practically impossible for any single individual to independently verify the results of a paper ballot election. The auditing process simply doesn't scale.
The way voting is conducted today, we must put our faith and trust in the hands of election officials, volunteer poll workers, and vulnerable paper ballot scanning technology to ensure our votes are counted correctly and are reported accurately.
In today's society, Millennials are finding it tough to trust in their government to do what's best for its citizens, according to the Boston Globe. This being the case, it comes to no surprise that more and more Millennials are choosing not to vote in elections, as many find it hard to believe that elections are honest and, as a result, have lost faith in the political process:
In contrast with the voting systems currently in use today, voters that vote using Follow My Vote's verifiable blockchain voting software will be able to follow their vote into the ballot box to ensure that their vote was safely and securely stored without being changed or altered in any way. They can even audit the ballot box for the entire election to ensure that the election results being reported are true and accurate.
Typically, when cutting edge technology is introduced to the world, there is an increased financial burden placed on early adopters who are willing to pay the higher cost in order to take advantage of the additional benefits the new technology provides.
Contrary to this trend, Blockchain Technology would drastically reduce the costs of our elections and free up taxpayer money to be spent on other important aspects of our society, such as improving the quality of our education systems or rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure.
Online voting has been tried before and failed due to the technological approach that was used. This only proves that online voting can be done wrong. Follow My Vote is here to prove that online voting can be done right, conducted safely and securely, when using Blockchain Technology.
If we can overcome the common misconception that online voting cannot be done safely and securely, we could encourage a whole new wave of voters to conveniently cast their vote online from anywhere in the world.
Why introduce a new voting system to the world that could cut costs, make voting more convenient and accessible, ensure elections are honest, and reassure voters that their voice was heard by their government?
Because we can. We now have Blockchain Technology to make all this possible. And, with a successfully funded Kickstarter campaign, Follow My Vote can complete our blockchain-based voting system and make honest elections possible worldwide, once and for all.
What's even more exciting is that, inclusive of the micro-nation of Liberland, we now have organizations interested in beta testing our voting software at every stage of development:
The core team at Follow My Vote is fully committed to fulfilling our mission. It's what we live for. We are sacrificing all that we have, our lives, to ensure this project's success. No matter what happens in the days ahead, we will see this project through to completion.
The question remains...
...what are you willing to sacrifice for this project to be successful?
We are asking our fellow Millennials to make a sacrifice, to cheat on your vices, if only for a night. #CheatOnMe
Whether you are a sucker for Starbucks coffee, a social smoker, a beer drinker, a wine connoisseur, a liquor lover, or a trend setter, all we are asking you to do is to sacrifice your vice for a night. Instead of spending your hard earned money on something you can live without, please consider spending it on the one thing the entire world needs now more than ever.
REWARDS FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION
Regardless of the amount you contribute, we will honor your sacrifice by putting your name on our website for the world to see!
If you are willing to contribute more than $1, we will reward you with the number of MERITs that corresponds to the price of the vice you are choosing to sacrifice.
We will also send you a picture of that vice, as well as a Follow My Vote refrigerator magnet, so that you can post it on your refrigerator in honor of the sacrifice you made for the world to have an honest voting system.
Enter Follow My Vote’s open-source end-to-end verifiable blockchain-based voting software...
Upon selecting their candidates, voters can use their unique Voter ID to open the ballot box, locate their vote, and ensure it was cast as intended and counted as cast.
Follow My Vote's voting software also supports real-time results, meaning that voters can watch the election progress in real time as votes are cast.
Imagine watching votes coming in from all over the country on election day with the vote totals adding up directly within the same software that was used to cast the votes. When the election ends, we would immediately know who won the election!
What’s even cooler is that Follow My Vote’s voting software allows for early voting. It will even allow the voter to return to the system and change their vote at any time before the election closes on election day.
Depending on where you live, most voters currently have an opportunity to vote early using a paper mail-in ballot. But, what happens if an early voter should learn of new information that changes their opinion of the candidate they voted for via their paper mail-in ballot? At this point, they have no way to change their vote, as their vote has already been cast and can't be taken back. In this scenario, not only does the voter not get to cast a vote for the candidate they want to win the election, they end up voting for a candidate they no longer support.
With the above scenario in mind, one can see that the concept of early voting is nothing new. However, the ability to change your vote, coupled with the ability to observe the election in real time, is a breakthrough that has major implications for the current two-party system.
Third-Party candidates rarely get elected, as many voters fear that voting for a third-party candidate is essentially wasting your vote on a candidate who is not likely to win. In this scenario, voters aren't voting for who they want to win the election, they are voting for the lesser of two evils.
Follow My Vote's voting system levels the playing field for third-party candidates in that it allows voters to vote for their candidate of choice, in the days leading up to the election, and see whether or not others vote for the same candidate. If it becomes clear that their candidate of choice truly stands no chance in winning, the voter can change their vote to another candidate. But, in this scenario, if the majority of people vote early and vote in support of a third-party candidate, there will be no need for voters to change their vote and the third-party candidate will end up winning the election.
Millennials, or America’s youth born between 1982 and 2000, now number 83.1 million and represent more than one quarter of the nation’s population. Their size exceeds that of the 75.4 million baby boomers, according to new U.S. Census Bureau estimates. Overall, millennials are more diverse than the generations that preceded them, with 44.2 percent being part of a minority race or ethnic group. With this in mind, when the candidate that truly has the most support among a diverse group of Millennials wins, we all win!
In the United States, millions of dollars of taxpayer money are spent on line items such as printing ballots and mailing voter information alone.
Follow My Vote’s voting system will drastically reduce the cost of hosting an election. Our software works on mobile devices and stores voting decisions in a blockchain-based ballot box that acts as a publicly verifiable digital paper trail, eliminating the need for expensive paper ballot printing and scanning hardware. These are unnecessary costs that can be reduced by transitioning to voting online, over time, as Follow My Vote is advocating.
As a member of the Open Source Initiative, Follow My Vote is also advocating for all election systems software to be developed as open source software, so that anyone can audit the software’s code to ensure it can be trusted. To this end, Follow My Vote's software is developed under the GPLv3 open source software license.
"I'm not sure if I believe in all this Blockchain Technology hype. Can Blockchain Technology really be trusted?"
Let's hear an explanation of how blockchain technology works from Follow My Vote's CTO, Nathan Hourt:
Satoshi Nakamoto first developed Blockchain Technology in 2009, as the underlying technology behind Bitcoin, which already secures billions of dollars worth of value for people all over the world.
Blockchain Technology is decentralized database storage that holds a ledger of transactions that are viewable by the public. All transactions that occur on a standard blockchain are verified and cryptographically signed to ensure privacy and security.
As illustrated above, a traditional processing network has one point of centralization, which is the point a hacker would attack to corrupt a system. In a decentralized system, there is no single point of weakness. This creates a system that is extremely low risk of being compromised.
To date, the Bitcoin blockchain has never been hacked. As a result of Bitcoin's success, Blockchain Technology has also achieved recognition worldwide as one of the most secure database management technologies that exists today.
How Follow My Vote Utilizes Blockchain Technology
Simply put, Blockchain Technology adds ballot box transparency and secure ballot storage to Follow My Vote's end-to-end verifiable voting system. By incorporating the security of the Blockchain into our voting system’s design, Follow My Vote has become an industry trailblazer:
Follow My Vote has also been recognized by the Huffington Post as a global leader in Blockchain Technology software development.
Follow My Vote's system further improves the security of their voting software by using asymmetric cryptography for secure ballot casting, as well as elliptic curve cryptography for digital signatures.
When we sat down to design the world's first verifiable voting system, we threw out all preconceived notions about how voting is done today and imagined how it should be down tomorrow.
It was immediately clear to us that an honest election needs to be verified from end-to-end, so there was no choice but to bring in online.
We also realized that, in order for our software to truly be end-to-end verifiable, our system must include ID Verification as a step in the process, prior to issuing voters their ballots in an anonymous way.
When designing our ID Verification and Anonymous Ballot Issuance processes, we had to be extremely careful to ensure that, once a voter casts his or her vote, there is no way that anyone else can tell how he or she voted.
By leveraging Blockchain Technology in combination with elliptic curve cryptography, we have broken open the ballot box to allow everyone to count the votes, all without compromising privacy or security.
Spring - 2016
We wanted to have a way for our contributors to provide us with feedback to ensure our voting software evolves they way our contributors want it to over time. Therefore, it's only natural that the first voting system that Follow My Vote will release is a blockchain-based stake-weighted voting system.
When people contribute to this Kickstarter Crowdfunding Campaign, they will be rewarded a MERIT for each dollar they contribute.
As a holder of MERIT, you will help set the direction of Follow My Vote’s software development. When Follow My Vote is deciding what features to add next, or which direction to take with their products, we will run stake-weighted polls within our voting software to prioritize development based on market demand. These polls will be weighted in MERIT, meaning that votes from MERIT holders will be weighted proportional to how many MERITs each holder owns in comparison to the other MERIT holders.
Our stake-weighted voting system will be released in the Spring of 2016, as a private beta.
Summer - 2016
We will be releasing a mobile ready version of our stake-weighted voting system over the summer of 2016. This version of our software will be an open beta, meaning it will be open to the public.
Fall - 2016
We will be adding support for the more traditional one-person one-vote style of voting to the mobile ready version of our stake-weighted voting system in the Fall of 2016.
Once our one-person one-vote voting system has been completed, we plan to demonstrate our solution to the world by hosting a mock election in parallel to the 2016 United States Presidential Election!
To ensure that everyone is properly identified prior to casting their vote in Follow My Vote's 2016 Parallel Presidential Election, we will be integrating with at least one of the leading ID Verification Providers, such as:
Follow My Vote's 2016 Parallel Presidential Election will be unlike any election that has taken place before. We will allow voters to vote early and even change their vote in the days leading up to the election.
As we approach election day, our real-time results feature will allow voters to see which candidates gain traction early on versus which candidates truly stand no chance of winning the election.
We plan to invite members from academic community to cover our 2016 Parallel Presidential Election. They will be developing a case study that analyzes our voting system software from a usability standpoint.
While our demonstration is underway, we also plan to host several penetration tests at various universities to see if any students have the hacking skills to steal/tamper with votes or manipulate the results.
But, we don't want to stop there. We'd like to extend an open invitation to anyone in the world to try penetrate our blockchain-based voting system.
In regards to collegiate participation specifically, students from the following universities have already expressed interest in getting involved:
We will also be inviting professionals to try and hack our system and will be offering a bounty to any hacker that is successful.
So far, the following companies are currently being considered:
Q1/Q2 - 2017
In 2017, we will be adding support for the variety of voting styles and counting algorithms to our voting software, such as Proportional Representation Voting Systems and Mixed Member Voting Systems, which are used in various countries throughout the world.
We'll also be making our blockchain-based voting software into an application available for download from the leading app stores:
Apple App Store
Our CEO, Adam Kaleb Ernest, invested his life savings into Follow My Vote in order to get the business off the ground. When that wasn't enough, he cashed out his 401K to extend Follow My Vote's lifespan.
At this point, we have early stage investors and venture capitalists from all over the world knocking on our door to try and get a piece of the action. However, being that we are striving to build a company of the people, by the people, and for the people, we'd prefer our funding come directly from the people themselves, as opposed to private investment.
With this Kickstarter campaign, we are looking to raise $3.2M to scale out our team and bring our product to market much faster than is possible with our current team.
How We Plan To Spend The Funds We Raise
Below you will see a breakdown of how we intend to spend the funds we raise from this Kickstarter Crowdfunding campaign.
Follow My Vote's offices are currently located at the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center in Blacksburg, Virginia. We have recently reached our full capacity and would like to use some of the funds to expand into the larger office space shown in the floor plan below:
In addition to expanding our office space, we'd like to scale our team of developers, which is where the bulk of our costs will come from.
We need to hire highly skilled developers that can work with our core team to get to ensure we get to the finish line in time for our planned 2016 Parallel Presidential Election demonstration. Here's our engineering hiring plan:
Good developers aren't cheap. And, in order to attract the right talent, we need to be able to offer competitive salaries. With this in mind, we've provided the data table below to indicate what average salaries look like for technology professionals in the United States:
We'll also be spending a significant portion of our budget on marketing and promotions in an effort to educate the people of this planet about our technology and the benefits it is capable of providing the world.
We will also need to hire several customer service specialists to ensure that the user experience goes as smoothly as possible during our demonstration and when the people use our voting software thereafter:

Risks and challenges
1) What if our system gets hacked?
We are so confident in the adversarial model behind our verifiable blockchain-based voting software's design, we will be inviting highly skilled hackers from all over the world to try and hack our system. Although the blockchain itself has never been hacked, the way in which developers integrate their software with the blockchain can be tricky. Should our system get hacked, that vulnerability will be exposed. If and when this does happen, we'll go back to the drawing board and figure out how to fix it.
We are prepared to go back and forth, building, testing, and learning, which is often referred to in the startup community as the "Lean Startup Approach," in order to reach a point we've identified and addressed all of the vulnerabilities hackers are capable of identifying. This is all part of the process of developing great software that people love to use.
2) What if the User Interface (UI) and/or the User Experience (UX) is horrible and people don't like it?
We are consulting with many of the world's renowned experts on UI/UX design to ensure this doesn't happen. Should people dislike our system's design, will take the learnings from our demo and refine the design, features, and functionality to better improve the UI/UX for all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
