About this project

Unsolicited Advice is a pocket-size dated agenda that gives you space to plan your life with encouragement, tiny handwritten advice, and jokes (that literally nobody asked for).

Another year? Didn't we just do this shit?

I swear it was 2016 like five minutes ago but here we are, getting ready to do it again. We'll be challenged, we'll celebrate, we'll set goals, screw up, and chase them again. Life is hard sometimes but I feel like it is, you know, worth it. If you're like me, the new year is a time of reflection and planning, when everything feels especially possible.

Give yourself the tools you need to "succeed" (whatever that means).

Sure, there are apps for this, but there's no substitute for a paper planner, which not only holds up to 365 days of data, but also doesn't require a secure wifi connection. There's something special about putting pen or pencil to paper, and that's also why there are about a million planners and agendas out there.

Why are planners boring, expensive or both?

Cheap planners are easy to find but have literally zero personality. Fancy planners might have like, revolutionary new layouts or colorful tabs or whatever but they also can be so nice that you're afraid to write in them. It's like, I'm trying to get my shit together and it's going to be a little messy and I just need to feel supported by someone who gets me, you know?

A simple, no-nonsense* planner you can actually use.

It's small, it's lightweight, it's cool but not too cool, and it's not too precious. This planner has evolved since 2011 and strikes the exact right balance between a functional planner and the weird little DIY "planner and life coach" it grew from. I'm 90% sure you'll actually use this thing all year.

Fun activity pages in the beginning help you set your goals, but like, only if you want to. Favorites like the "Instant Grams" emergency social posts are back again, and throughout the year I'll surprise you with activity pages every few weeks. Each new month starts with a full page calendar grid to cross off the days as they go, and a monthly goals writing page.

The actual weekly spreads put the focus on you, so there's enough open space that you can plan ahead, or use this as a dated diary to recap your life as it happens. I'll pop in to offer advice, doodles, moon cycles, mercury retrograde warnings, holidays (all the real ones plus some of the fake ones), and an end-of-week catch up section.

*does actually contain some nonsense lol

This is the seventh edition of Unsolicited Advice and it's become a really special tradition. Every year it gets a little bit better, and you can trust me to make something solid and get it to you with plenty of time before the holidays. I'm a pro now, and if you're coming back, you probably are too. Let's make 2018 the biggest edition yet!

The Rewards

Unsolicited Advice 2018 (shown with $40 level add-ons)
Unsolicited Advice 2018 (shown with $40 level add-ons)

Each copy of the Unsolicited Advice 2018 Weekly Planner comes with a mini pencil, a sticker sheet, a postcard, and other little surprise extras.

The main focus for this campaign is pre-orders of the 2018 weekly planners so that I can self publish them again this year. To reduce costs and speed up the process of shipping everyone's packages, the planner comes in pairs, everyone gets all the extras automatically, and the add-on options are limited. I hope that also encourages you to use Unsolicited Advice along with someone else in your life because okay, honestly, life is not the easiest and there's no reason to do 2018 alone.

Unsolicited Advice makes a really cool and inexpensive holiday gift because everyone is starting a new year no matter what.

Perfect for when your work makes you do a gift exchange or if you have a bunch of students or a big family. Guys... this is a cool thing that many people enjoy every year... but it's also a calendar. It's pretty easy to gift. Happy holidays!!!

All reward levels include Kickstarter & credit card fees (8-10% of the fundraising total). Shipping cost is based on USPS First Class & Priority Mail rates. Check the FAQs for more info.

Things Are What You Make of Them

This year you can add a signed copy of my new book Things Are What You Make of Them to your package!

This full-color, pocket-size book touches on topics like the fears that stop us before we even start, comparing ourselves to others, creative "secrets" that aren't really secrets at all, and even just how to be happier. It's optimistic and encouraging, but never too cheesy. Learn more here.

Each copy will be signed but not personalized, so you can keep it, gift it, or tell yourself it's a gift but then keep it anyway.

The EVERYTHING Keychain

You can also choose to add an exclusive keychain, not available anywhere else.

My EVERYTHING WILL BE SO GOOD SO SOON SO HANG IN THERE & DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT SO MUCH artwork might be the most popular thing I've ever made and you might have seen it floating around the internet before. Maybe you didn't even know a real person made it.

Surprise, I am the person and now it's a gold enamel keychain and you can carry it around forever. It's a very sturdy imperfect circle, about 1.75" in diameter and it actually weights 2 ounces which isn't like, heavy, but it is more substantial than a piece of plastic. I feel like it's almost an amulet to protect us from our own bullshit basically. Stay calm, it's okay, things take time.

About Me & Kickstarter

I'm a Brooklyn-based designer, artist and author of 1 Page at a Time and Pick Me Up, worked with clients like the New York Times and Urban Outfitters, been featured in NYLON, PRINT, VICE, BuzzFeed and other publications, and am one of PRINT's 15 Under 30 Artists and a 2017 Webby Awards Honoree. Basically I am a nice guy who makes nice things.

This is my sixth Kickstarter campaign for Unsolicited Advice, and I'm very proud to have backed 62 (and counting!) other Kickstarter projects. I love Kickstarter a lot and I take my responsibility to every backer very seriously. I hope to keep earning your trust each year.

Here's some more about me:

I also have a line of gifts & stationery and you can follow me on Instagram

Risks and challenges

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR KICKSTARTER ACCOUNT EMAIL IS THE ONE YOU CHECK EVERY DAY THIS IS SO IMPORTANT.

This is my sixth time running this project on Kickstarter and I can very confidently say that I am good at this. Design, printing, packaging and shipping all happen here in New York and I get better at it every year.

The only real challenge, as always, is with the United States Postal Service. You'll get a custom shipment notification email with a tracking link, and I will stay on top of your individual order to make sure everything goes smoothly but there are always a few hiccups around the holidays. Hopefully the quick fulfillment will help us beat the holiday rush.

When the campaign ends, the "Backer Survey" is how you'll give me your shipping address. The quicker you do that step, the easier it'll be to get your packages to you. These are dated calendars, so if I can't get your copy to you, you'll literally be losing pages that you've paid for! Don't just give me free money unless you really want to?????
