Unsolicited Advice: 2017 Weekly Planner
47.846 $

Now in it's sixth edition, Unsolicited Advice is exactly what it sounds like – a year's worth of tiny reminders and advice that you didn't ask for but might appreciate anyway. It's a 2017 planner with a personality that's a little jaded but mostly just hoping for the best. This is for anyone who needs a little distraction and encouragement to get going but also just wants the freedom of a simple little planner to make their own. Plus it's yellow which is a nice color.
This pocket-sized weekly planner has all the basics, like dates and holidays and shit, but it also has a lot that those other agendas don't, like activities and my tiny illustrations and misattributed "inspirational" aphorisms. ("Today sucks but I notice you are still alive and that's great." – Winston Churchill). If you've used this planner before, you already have a good idea of what to expect and if you haven't, well you are in for a lot of little surprises.
It's straightforward, with plenty of writing space so that this becomes yours, not mine. Activities are always double-sided so if they get in your way, tear them out! The books are well constructed but like not too well, you know what I mean? This is a small, lightweight agenda that you can actually carry around every day, and fun enough to actually stick with all year.
All rewards will ship the week of November 21st for holiday gifting!
- 5" x 6" fits in your back pocket or bag
- Wire-bound book actually lies flat so you can use it
- 160 black and white pages
- Weekly spreads with just enough space for every day, plus an extra space at the end of each week
- Monthly calendar grids let you plan each month in advance and cross off dates as they pass
- Monthly planning pages for "goals" or whatever
- Simple yellow cover makes this look exactly like the yellow book emoji basically
- Even stronger covers because every year people are like "make the cover stronger" so then I make it stronger and this year is no exception
- Fun and cool but not like "cool" cool because literally who is cool do you know any cool people I don't even know what that means
- Sorry mom there are some cuss words in here I'm sorry!!!!
Take a look at (this printed proof of) the 2017 edition for yourself! Weekly spreads, monthly grids and goal setting, plus a healthy dose of tiny surprises and activities all year long.
Unsolicited Advice 2017 ships in pairs because it's made to be gifted, and every copy comes with extras because every backer is equally important in making this project come to life.
- Every copy will now include an extra little "Bottled-Up FEELINGS" sticker
- Each backer will now receive a bonus enamel pin
There are no crazy combos or t-shirts or other whatever because that stuff is such a nightmare. It's simple: a pair of planners, enough extras for everyone, and maybe a book for you. That's it!
Some reward packages include signed copies of Pick Me Up: A Pep Talk For Now & Later. This new book pairs perfectly with Unsolicited Advice for those that want more of the weird stuff (without the structure of dates, or you know, consecutive pages).
I'm Adam J. Kurtz, a Brooklyn-based designer and the artist/author of two creative journal books, 1 Page at a Time and Pick Me Up. I've been on Kickstarter for almost six years and you can see how this project has grown (and the other cool projects I've backed) in my user profile.
In addition to publishing projects, I have an online gift shop, have collaborated on products with brands like Urban Outfitters and Strand Bookstore, and done work for brands like Pepsi and Adobe. I actually won two design awards this year but let's be real, nobody cares!!!!!
Basically I'm a weird nice guy who is a little too honest and works on a lot of fun and creative projects. You can read a little more about me on the Kickstarter blog, check out this Urban Outfitters studio visit, or hear me on The Great Discontent's podcast.
Here are some things people have said about me and my work:
- "Blurring the line between artist and therapist" (VICE)
- "Adam J. Kurtz is master of the playful, lightweight mood booster." (BuzzFeed)
- "Kurtz’s raw illustrations complement his overtly honest journal prompts" (HOW Design)
- “Internet famous” (Refinery29)
- “Bring a trash bag of Zoloft” (Fast Company)
Here are some things said about Unsolicited Advice specifically:
- "The perfect gift for any unorganized 20-something in your life" (Urban Outfitters Blog)
- "Coy" (The New Yorker)
- "Fun, reflective, and uplifting" (BuzzFeed)
You can also find me on instagram, twitter, tumblr or facebook. Or visit my website. Or my online gift shop. Or catch me at the post office via PO BOX 550, Brooklyn, NY 11211.
Riesgos y desafíos
I'm not good at a lot of things but I am very good at doing this project every year. I have a very solid grip on the process. The books are printed locally, and everything is ordered as the campaign runs so there are no surprises. Timing matters because these are holiday gifts! Basically, within a week after this campaign ends, we will be ready to send out the rewards. I have been complimented on the speed of reward fulfillment and it is a point of pride for me.
Through years of trial and error I have learned best practices for packaging, postage and labeling, the additional rewards, even getting the post office to send a truck to pick up the mail (though I will inevitably still end up taking a few giant bags of mail to the post office in a taxi).
The main issue comes down to the postal service, which is inevitable. Occasionally international packages get delayed and rarely, misplaced, in which case I will always work with you to figure it out.
