About

The OK Tarot deck features simple illustrations of the major and minor arcana, leaving individual interpretation up to you.

The OK Tarot deck

This unique deck features all 78 major and minor arcana as understood and interpreted by artist Adam J. Kurtz (that's me). While many decks, such as the classic Rider-Waite, incorporate a ton of rich and detailed illustration, this one… does not. It's not the best, but it's pretty OK.

Produced in the standard 2.75 x 4.75 inch size, these cards are professionally-printed with rounded corners and a nice pink throughout, resulting in a beautiful deck that you'll want to keep near. It's the perfect addition to your personal meditative space and (I hope!) a welcome addition to your self-care practice.

The story behind this deck

My own journey with tarot is just beginning. My husband Mitchell has been interested in tarot for years, since purchasing his first deck and book as a teen. As the world gets seemingly worse (or maybe we're just more aware than ever), his interest was renewed and he doubled down with an extra deck and more books. In that way, this project really began as a gift for him and evolved from there. His books became the foundation of my research and I quickly learned that a lot of what I thought I knew was wrong.

One thing that really surprised me was the amount of religious iconography throughout many common decks. Growing up in a religious community it was immediately the only thing I could see in the cards and really threw me off. This new interpretation is rooted in some of the classic imagery, but does away with nearly all of the religion. I also avoided all depictions of people, making this deck completely gender agnostic. Because it's fucking 2018 people!!!!

The campaign rewards

My primary focus here is to create a beautiful, professionally produced deck. Rather than load up on too many bonus rewards (aka distractions) I'm focusing on the deck itself. When you back this campaign you are essentially pre-ordering, and if I can pre-sell enough, then I will be able to order the quantity that most printers require.

  • 78 cards for a full, complete deck
  • Standard "tall" size (2.75 x 4.75 inches)
  • Pretty, simple pink backs
  • Rounded corners
  • Minimum 320gsm paper stock
  • Paper coated for protection
  • Clean packaging (tuck box or 2-piece lidded box)

As an extra bonus, orders of two or more decks will include a bonus enamel pin featuring art from the deck. Backers will have the opportunity to vote for the final pin design from three options.

Stretch goals

My hope is to make this deck as special as possible. Of course, the real meaning is found in your own readings, but as a professional graphic designer, I know there's magic in the details.

As we cross through the minimum fundraising needed, I'll keep making the production more and more special. My baseline already covers sturdy, well-printed cards, but the more we raise, the more I can add. Personal goals include an upgraded, two-piece, lidded box, increased cardstock thickness, and other small finishing adjustments.

About the artist

Adam J. Kurtz (aka @adamjk) is an artist and author whose illustrative work is rooted in honesty, humor and a little darkness. His books have been translated into over a dozen languages and his “very personal” work for clients like Strand Bookstore and Urban Outfitters has been featured in the New Yorker, VICE, Adweek and more.

I've completed six successful Kickstarter campaigns since 2013, and have backed 70 other campaigns from creators worldwide. Basically, I'm an active member of the Kickstarter community with a proven track record of being accountable, producing quality work, and shipping rewards quickly.

Risks and challenges

The art is 100% completed (except for the box) and samples have been made, which greatly reduces the turnaround time.

In my experience, the greatest risk with Kickstarter campaigns is shipping. This can be a time-consuming process, though I'm proud to have shipped over 10,000 packages in my years as a project creator and artist with an online shop. Because the US Postal Service is never perfect, I always budget for replacement decks and extra postage costs to make sure misplaced packages don't mean individual backers are left hanging.

As with any printing job, there's always a slight risk of production issues. I'll work to be as transparent as possible, keeping in contact via project updates if there are any delays in the process. My hope is that with my printer-ready files and previous sampling, we'll be good to go!
