The Fragment! The Cambridge File is an all-new one-shot from Good For Nothing Comics! A 28-page retro spy thriller inspired by Film, TV and Comic Books of the 1960s. Written and drawn by Adam Falp with letters from Mike Stock, The purpose of the campaign is to raise funds for printing as well as hopefully getting the book into the hands of new readers.
The First Fragment! one-shot was launched in October last year and follows the adventures of Thomas Locke, a special agent for the British Secret Intelligence Service. Set in the 1950's Locke was sent to rescue Britons held captive during the Korean War. What his employers don't know, is that Thomas suffers from severe Dissociative identity disorder, often switching between personas during assignments. Now 5 years since his last assignment, Thomas Locke must escape one of Britains highest security mental institutions in order to retrieve some of Britains most classified documents, while exacting revenge on those that have crossed his path during before the war.
The Cambridge File builds on the Fragment! although both issues are designed to be read stand alone - so if you haven't read the first Fragment! book, don't worry! The Cambridge File is a complete story on its own. You can, of course, pledge to receive both 28-page books in this campaign - Just remember to back the "Double Agent" reward tier or add £2 (GBP) to your pledge if your backing a commission level reward.
I created The Fragment! after watching a lot of the spy genre material that was coming out of the U.K in the 1960s. After watching the earliest James Bond films, TV shows such as The Saint and The Prisoner and reading a lot of fiction novels from the same period, I created the story and its characters. While colouring the first one-shot, I found myself looking to the colour palettes of legendary comics artists such as Jack Kirby and Gil Kane for innovation. Between then and now my admiration for their work has grown and this latest book became a vehicle for me to express my love for comics from that time. I don't want to give anything away but i do want to share the style of the books so below are some of the finished pages of art for the Cambridge File, to really get you in the mood for what we're trying to do!
To show off Mike's fantastic talents you can also take a look at some lettered pages from the first issue below, and read a 9-page preview here.
And finally, here some kind words about the series so far;
"All the look and feel of Jack Kirby doing Bond. The Fragment is completely fun, stunning and insane. Blows 007 out of the water!"
- Tom (That Comic Smell Podcast)
"Falp is a legitimate ideas machine. He attacks comics with a respect for the old school but armed with a flaming sword of punk rock attitude!"
- Tony Esmond (Down The Tubes)
On Thursday the 20th June at 9pm GMT I'll be doing a live drawing session! I'll also be answering any questions you may be wondering about the book. At the end of a stream, i'll be picking a physical backer at random and they will receive what i've drawn as a reward!
The first 20 backers recieve an exclusive numbered postcard, with a Fragment! sketch on the back!
I'm eager to show how grateful i am for your fantastic support, so what better way to thank you than to give you more comics. I've been making some mini comics in-between bigger projects and figured one more wouldn't hurt. So, at £700 all physical backers will receive an exclusive 12 page mini comics featuring 2 new Fragment! stories.
So aside from the books what else can you pledge towards? Well, I've tried to keep the tiers very simple. I want the emphasis to be on the book and I hope that comes through. I have added a few things however that I'm very excited about. There is a tier to receive both books and 2 A4 heavyweight prints, one from myself and one from one of the UK's hottest independent comics properties, Mr. Nick Prolix! You can see the prints below. These are exclusive to this campaign, you won't see them anywhere else! You can find out more about Nicks work here.
For the first time, I'm also offering up various different commission tiers. The first, is an A5 black and white sketch of a character of your choice, in the style seen in some examples below.
The other 2 styles are A4 and A3 commissions of a character of your choice - these are spray painted and then inked over the top. You can find some example of these below!
Risks and challenges
I've tried to reduce risks to a minimal on this one! The art for the book is complete and it is currently with Mike being lettered. As soon as the kickstarter funds come through, the book will be sent straight to print and any art rewards will be started! i aim to get the book to you guys within a couple of months as most of the hard work has already been done!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
