About

Hi, I'm Adam Tierney. And I've been writing stories as long as I can remember.

For the past 15 years, I've written, designed, and directed many video games (Aliens, Silent Hill, Til Morning's Light, River City Girls). I've also written for TV (Teen Titans Go!). But for all the work I did in those mediums, I never got around to realizing my childhood dream of writing an actual, physical, hold-it-in-your-hands book.

So in 2015, I launched a Kickstarter for my first book project, a collection of short horror stories for kids called, “Afraid of Everything.” Over 400 people believed in the project, and 3 years after the original campaign ran, we shipped all copies of the book out.

Since then, “Afraid of Everything” has been picked up for commercial publication in early 2020 by one of my favorite publishers, and I’ve started writing several follow-up projects. This campaign is for the first of those new books titled, “Those Kids U Know.”

"Those Kids U Know" is basically a catalog of the different kinds of teenagers we all went to high school with. There are the jocks, the geeks, rich kids, outcasts. Each of the 26 A-to-Z pages highlights a different character and high school trope. But as the book goes on, the kids get bored remaining on their own page and start wandering around, getting into trouble, interacting with each other, and breaking their own stereotypes.

It’s a weird concept, and easier experienced than explained, so check out the 7-page preview below, or watch the campaign video above, with narration by the amazing Brizzy (Anna Brisbin).

The book was inspired first and foremost by its illustrator, the very talented Kelly Ficarra. For anyone who bought my previous book, Kelly illustrated the bookmark story.

I came across Kelly's art on Twitter a while back and was blown away by her unique visual style, and the way she balances complex adult themes with cute, cartoony visuals. Once I saw Kelly's art, I immediately wanted to work with her, and the concept and title for "Those Kids U Know" popped into my head, fully-formed.

The board-book-style hardcover is $20 shipped within the US (more for overseas) and even cheaper if you're one of the first people to support the campaign. For a little more money, Kelly and I will sign the book, or she'll sketch a character inside, or even produce a full-color illustration, just like the ones inside the book.

Check out the chart below to see exactly where your money will be going if you decide to help support this project:

  • Artwork costs = 30%
  • Book printing costs = 40%
  • Book shipping costs = 20%
  • Kickstarter and payment processing fees = 10%

If you'd like to help spread the word about this project, you can click either of the buttons below to post about this project on Twitter or Facebook.

If we're able to pass our initial $10,000 goal, we'll add stretch goals here with extra content that will be a free addition for ALL backers, such as an audiobook download (read by Brizzy) of the full book.

But for now, let's focus on hitting that initial amount first. Thanks for reading through this, and I hope you enjoy the craziness that Kelly and I have in store for the full book next year.

Risks and challenges

This is my second book campaign on Kickstarter, and because of that, we're starting with much greater expertise than last time. We already have our book's printer selected, we've done a test copy (which you can see in the photos), we're leaving ourselves plenty of time to write, draw, and design the book, and we're limiting rewards to what we can comfortably produce.

We don't anticipate any risks or major challenges with this project, but if issues spring up, we will discuss them here openly with our backers. And if we need to change anything from the original plan, we'll let our backers help make decisions with us on how to change things, rather than just springing new plans on them.
