Thanks for helping us cruise past our original goal of $4,000. We are now aiming for $6,000 with only hours left on the clock for you to pledge a donation. TO ENCOURAGE NEW BACKERS WE WILL BE UPGRADING DONATION REWARDS TO THE NEXT LEVEL FROM HERE ON OUT (select the amount you are actually pledging, then we will upgrade your pledge). $10 will get the $25 reward, $25 the $50 and so on and so on. The extra money will be the difference between us barely having enough money to shoot and us having enough money to make our dream version of the film. Thanks again. We're working hard to reward your faith.
Nursing Holmes is a short film by Adam Best starring Gary Chason and Alex Dobrenko. The film is the story of B.C. Holmes, a sixty-something con man who lives fast and refuses to grow up. B.C.'s socially awkward brainiac partner, Stilts Fitzsimmons, breaks him out of the nursing home where he's been serving a suspended sentence. B.C. owes money to an eclectic East Side pimp named Marlin, so the not-so-dynamic duo goes right back to work. B.C.’s completely past his prime as a grifter, and that, paired with his addiction to the night life, is going to get him in trouble before the night is over.
What is Kickstarter?
People can support our film by pledging donations and receive corresponding rewards. After our Kickstarter campaign ends, if the total amount pledged equals our goal of $4,000, the credit cards used to pledge to our project are charged and backers receive rewards. If we don't meet our goal, credit cards aren't charged, no rewards are given and we don't get money. Kickstarter is all or nothing. Projects either make goals and get funded, or don't make it and get nothing. Kickstarter charges a 5% fee and Amazon charges a 3-5% credit card processing fee, but the rest of the funds raised will be used strictly for our production budget. If you have problems with Kickstarter or Amazon -- several of you have reported issues pledging -- please contact us directly so we can help.
Nursing Holmes is a stand-alone short, but I’ve also completed the script for the upcoming feature. Our plan:
- Get this short into film festivals in Texas and across the country
- Launch a website showcasing the film
- Use the film as an extended trailer to drum up interest for the feature version and get that version produced
We’ve already raised some money of our own, but quality films are insanely expensive to produce. The money raised here on Kickstarter is what will put this production over the top and allow it to be special. This film has everything: comedy, drama, action, suspense -- a short animation sequence is even in our plans. Obviously, the more resources we are able to put together, the better the film will turn out.
About the Filmmaker
I’ve been a storyteller my entire life. Doodling cartoons. Scribbling short stories. Directing my fellow grade school thespians in the backyard. Narrating tales during campfires, sleepovers and bus trips. I studied English, Theatre and Film in college. Went to film school, where I was the 35 mm film director for my graduating class. After stint as a spec screenwriter in L.A., I decided to do my own thing. That's when I became a Co-Founder (and eventually CEO) of a sports content start-up called FanSided. In that role, I'm in charge of hundreds of writers/freelance employees and oversee the creative direction of the company. All of this has prepared me well to finally achieve my lifelong dream and become a filmmaker.
P.S. - Feel free to message me if you have any questions about the project.

More About the Film
This project had many inspirations and influences. First off, I believe it's never too late to change. That's why I decided to write a story about the world's oldest juvenile delinquent. Additionally, flicks like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Do the Right Thing, Something Wild and The Royal Tenenbaums had such a profound effect on me. Movie simulacra with exaggerated environments and caricature-like characters that somehow provided comedy and revealed truth. Grounded enough to feel real, yet quirky enough to seem surreal. I wanted to make that kind of movie. Other primary influences include the vivid graffiti-inspired artwork of Keith Haring and Basquiat; along with jazzy, old-school hip-hop acts like A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde and De La Soul. Obviously, Austin's eccentric and kaleidoscopic backdrop played a significant role, too. This film is also infused with the growing pains I experienced during my topsy-turvy journey from boyhood to manhood -- a journey that’s really never truly complete.
