What do you get when you cross a fixed gear bike and some of the catchiest tunes this side of the Mississippi? Hipster! The Musical. That's what.
A Big Vision Industries production, in association with Perplexity Pictures, this collaborative film is being brought to life by a group of young and talented artists in Denver, Colorado.
A musical-comedy with heart, Hipster! The Musical is a satirical look at the culture of hipsters. The story follows Dave, a shy college kid who must embrace his inner irony (and grow a beard) to try one last time to captivate the girl he loves.
And only through song and dance will he muster the courage it takes for a happy ending.
Think of Hipster! The Musical being to hipsters what The Book of Mormon is to Mormonism, or The Producers is to Broadway culture.
Other inspirations for the film include Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Sweeney Todd, Next to Normal, Hello! Dolly, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and other musicals, both contemporary and classic, from the screen and from the stage.
This unparalleled idea struck Writer/Director/Producer Adam Blair while he was at the gym one cold September morning. He saw a hipster walking out of the place, dressed for warm weather, yoga mat under her arm. She mounted her vintage fixed gear bike with one hand and began smoking a rolled cigarette in the other. "How delightfully hypocritical," Adam thought to himself. But then the gears in his head started turning. "There's a film in there somewhere..."
And now here we are. Almost seven months later, and this seed of an idea has exploded into a feature-length musical comedy, intended to satirize the ironic nature of hipster sub-culture while also showing - in true musical form - that real emotion and heart can arise when you genuinely embrace yourself and the ones you love.
This movie will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will make you want to sing and dance along.
With songs by Sam Golden (one of the masterminds behind Denver-based band The Query), Producer Rob Shearer, Director of Photography George V.K., Gaffer Trevr Merchant, Art Director Olivia Pecukonis, and Dance Choreography by the one-and-only Sinjin Jones, this is a quality group of people coming together to create something genuinely unique.
And delightfully ironic.
But! We need your help to bring this project to life. It is incredibly ambitious, and, although we have the talent and motivation needed to make it happen, we don't have enough of the green stuff. The funds gained from this Kickstarter campaign will go directly into the budget for the film - renting camera and grip equipment, acquiring costumes and props, renting studio space, feeding the crew, hiring an orchestra, and all of that other good stuff that goes into a quality film.
Every penny counts in the film business!
But we aren't being stingy about it, either. Every single tax deductible contribution means a really great, exclusive (and ironic) incentive.
Not only does Hipster! The Musical represent a playful mocking of hipster culture through great songs and intricate dance, but it will function as an experiment in the future of independent film distribution. While it will go the traditional route and be shown at international film festivals, it will also pave the way for where the industry is inevitably headed: the Internet. We plan on pushing hard for distribution through iTunes, Netflix, and a personal site dedicated to the streaming of the film.
And you get to be an integral part of it all!
The entire cast and crew of Hipster! The Musical thank you for your support, and hope that you get as much joy from the film and its incentives as we have already!
