About this project
"There's no other world to describe SAYER but brilliant." - Michelle Starr, CNET
"If you enjoy the creepiness factor of Welcome to Night Vale, you’ll enjoy SAYER," - Heather Mason, Geek and Sundry
"Eerie and cold, SAYER radiates a(n)... immediate menace" - Cassandra Khaw, Ars Technica UK
Funded within an hour! You are all amazing. Thankfully I had big plans in mind for the stretch goals.
First on the list, a stretch goal that was funded within minutes of posting, is a refresh of Season 1. I've listened back to those first handful of episodes and, suffice it to say, I got a lot more consistent with the SAYER voice over time. I'm excited to go back and update the first season so the quality is on par with the rest of the series.
Our second stretch goal, achieved on 1/16, is an all new SAYER comic. I've been talking with an amazing artist (and SAYER fan) Jonas Goonface about a new comic to tantalize your visual receptors. You can check out his amazing webcomic Follow the Leader to get an idea of his style. I can't wait to see what his vision of the SAYER universe looks like! Reaching this stretch goal has put us to work on a new SAYER comic, with a digital version coming to every single backer. And every backer who's pledged $100 or more will get a printed signed copy of the limited print run!
Our next stretch goal will be achieved at $12,000, and it's something the community has been asking for: Individual Resident ID numbers! I'll go back and compare with previous lists to assign a totally unique resident identification number to every Kickstarter backer.
That leaves the next BIG goal... at $15,000 I'll begin working on a game I've had in mind for a while now - SAYER: Doki Doki Space Boyfriend. A tongue-in-cheek take on the visual novel/dating sim game genre, this game will feature anthropomorphized versions of the AI's from Typhon. Can you win the heart of SAYER, SPEAKER, or maybe that malfunctioning elevator? If funded, every backer pledging $25 or more will get a PC or Mac copy of SAYER: Doki Doki Space Boyfriend.
It's 2017, and our world is a literal dumpster fire. If you're like me, you wish you could just strap yourself to a rocket and blast yourself into space, only looking back one time to flip Earth the bird.
Well I don't have a rocket. I don't have any rocket fuel even if I had a rocket. I certainly don't have the proper knowledge of federal airspace regulations necessary to ensure my bespoke rocket wouldn't get shot down by some sort of missile defense system. But what I can offer you is the temporary experience of this escape. That, my friends, is SAYER.
SAYER is a narrative fiction podcast set on Earth's man-made second moon, Typhon. Ruthlessly dangerous, your only friend here is SAYER itself; the informational A.I. being beamed into your mind by your benevolent employer Ærolith Dynamics. In the name of scientific advancement and cold efficiency, you will boldly strike forth to stake humanity's claim among the stars!
It was mere months after Season 3 ended in December 2015 that I began to have ideas of where the story could go next. Ideas or not, I didn't see how I could possibly return to the show because SAYER requires a significant amount of work. By the end of Season 3, it was a one man show. It took a dozen hours to write, record, mix, edit, and produce a single episode of SAYER. Operating in this way, it's not something that fits into the meager time my busy life allows me.
I am, however, fortunate to have a career with summers off. Usually I get a summer job to help support my family and keep busy, but this year I realized I have a unique opportunity to make SAYER my summer job. If we hit the funding goal, I will make SAYER my 9-5 job during summer break, enabling me to produce a full season in just a few short months.
Season 4 will take the show in a unique direction, as every season before has. I will write every episode, giving me the opportunity to construct a cohesive story arc stretching over the full span of episodes. Seasons 2 and 3 gave us the ability to see into different parts of Typhon as we hopped from resident to resident. Season 4 sees a return to the "one special resident" philosophy of Season 1 and I can't wait for you to experience that.
Episodes will not begin immediately after the Kickstarter funds. I'll continue fleshing out scripts in the months leading up to summer. If all goes according to plan, I'll be streaming a backers-only listening party to Season 4 Episode 1 on June 2nd, 2017 - a full week before it's released on the feed! I've planned for a 15 episode season, with the possibility for more if certain stretch goals are funded. This would mean new SAYER episodes for at least the remainder of 2017.
What's the point of a Kickstarter without rewards, right? I think we have a varied enough selection that there should be something of interest to everyone. There are a lot of goodies over there on the right, but I feel like some need a little extra explanation:
Every backer will get two bonus episodes that will only ever be released through this Kickstarter. For an example of past Bonus Episodes, check out the fan favorite Rose Elf episode.
Backer-only Livestream Access
Every backer gets access to the secret backer-only stream where I will broadcast the Moon Cops sessions, Ærolith Approved Fiasco, the Season 4 Episode 1 early access listening party, and the special backers-only Q&A bonus episode.
SAYER will record your message of 150 words or less
This has been something people have been asking for for a while now. This would make a great outgoing message for your voicemail or could be a nice way to really unnerve that special someone in your life.
Please note: I retain veto rights to message content. I won't record anything I find to be in poor taste or that I feel would reflect negatively on myself as a performer.
Signed "Welcome to Typhon" comic
Very few of these comics remain in the wild, and I've commandeered all of them for this reward tier. We currently have no plans to reprint this comic, so this may be your last chance to own a physical copy.
Season 3 Finale Arc script book
Judging by the response we heard from our listeners, the final span of episodes from Season 3 was the most successful arc of the entire series. To celebrate those epic moments in SAYER history, we are producing a Kickstarter exclusive hardcover book featuring the scripts from Episodes 39, 42, 43 and 44.
Admission to the SAYER LARP at GeeklyCon
Sadly, no…. this event will not have you charging through the woods hurling beanbags at your friends for 2 damage. This is a LARP in the Nordic tradition, focusing far more on bleeding the edges between reality and the role. Players will don the metaphorical jumpsuits of new recruits in one of Ærolith Dynamics Earth-based hiring centers. Think of it like a job interview with puzzles and pretend death. I will be personally running each session of this roughly 45-60 minute game and the only way to guarantee a slot is choosing a tier that grants this reward.
Play the Ærolith Approved Fiasco playset with Adam Bash
Back in 2014 we built a SAYER themed playset for Fiasco called Ærolith Approved. I have only played one game, and I played it as SAYER. Backers at this level will play in a 2 hour streamed game of Fiasco where I will be voicing SAYER live. Technology is a wonderful thing.
Play D&D or WoD with Adam Bash at Geeklycon
Talk with anyone who’s played a D&D one-shot with me and they’ll tell you it was a totally unique experience. I’ve built prison camp escapes with double agent guards, catacombs haunted by funhouse versions of the party, and scenarios where players realize they’re the avatars of literal gods. And with Brute Force, I think I can add World of Darkness to the list of systems with which I’m comfortable. I only plan to run one tabletop game at GeeklyCon. This is your shot to play in it.
Have lunch with Adam Bash at GeeklyCon
I suppose there’s always the possibility that you’re not into tabletop gaming but are still coming to GeeklyCon anyway to hang out with awesome people, meet your favorite podcasters, and go sight-seeing around St. Louis. Let’s have lunch! You can invite some friends, or I can invite my friends, or we can just hang and talk about life among the stars.
Note: Because I wouldn’t put it past someone to pick this reward and then try to order one of everything off the menu, this reward doesn’t pay for your food or drink at lunch. However, if you’re 21 I’ll definitely buy you a beer!
Play in a 3 Session Moon Cops campaign
As I said, Moon Cops is coming back for a limited run! Here's your chance to enter the service of Ærolith Dynamics' elite tower security forces for a 3 session live-streamed canonical story arc. I'll collaborate with you to help build your character in my homebrewed Moon Cops system. No matter how experienced you are (or aren't) with tabletop gaming, you'll have no trouble maneuvering this system that's light on technical details but heavy on roleplay potential.
Autographed original inked artwork or title page from "Welcome to Typhon"
Talk about limited edition, here's a reward I'd be jealous of. Each backer at this level will get a one-of-a-kind 11.5"x16" original print used to make the first SAYER comic "Welcome to Typhon." Each piece is illustrated by comics legend Jim Lawson and inked by the amazing Colin Panetta. Whoever snatches our highest reward tier will get the cream of the crop, the original single-pane title page showing the first official visual representation of Halcyon Tower's interior.
Adam's Season 4 handwritten script book
If you really want a piece of SAYER history, there has never been a prize like this before. This book is Adam's personal writing journal, used to develop every script from Season 4. Hand-bound and designed by Dave Rollins of Black Magic Bindery, this tome holds secrets to which no one else will have access unless you allow them. If I fill it over the course of the season, I'll buy another to continue with... and you'll get that one too. Just for good measure, I'll throw in my personal Fisher Space Pen, so you can write in zero gravity like me.
Your name in the credits for every episode of Season 4
We'll work together to come up with the coolest fake title for you, and it will be attached to every Season 4 episode both in the audio credits and the show notes. You've done more than anyone else to make SAYER Season 4 a reality, so you've earned recognition that never fades.
Risks and challenges
I can forsee a couple of scenarios that would leave me unable to fulfill the objective of this project.
1) I could die.
2) I could have my throat ripped up by a bear; living but unable to speak
3) I could develop some sort of allergy to microphones
I don't believe any of these to be likely. I've produced 3 seasons of this show, so I understand what the work will entail. Excepting some horrible illness striking me down in my prime, this project is as close to a sure thing as exists on this rotting husk of a planet.
Very few of the proposed rewards hold significant risk. If I am unable to attend GeeklyCon due to a grave illness any GeeklyCon event rewards (LARP, D&D, or Lunch) would be replaced with online variations. Physical rewards would still be distributed on-site.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
What is the difference between the Halcyon Resident tier and the Halcyon Resident (GeeklyCon Attendees) tier?
If you're not attending GeeklyCon, I won't be able to hand you the script book in person. Kickstarter's system will have you add on shipping costs to your pledge amount, and there was no easier option to not charge GeeklyCon goers for shipping they wouldn't need.
I'm not going to be a stickler for word counts. If something looks way too long, and if I check it and see it's like 200 words, then yeah I'm probably going to ask you to revise.
