Quest for Enlightenment I: The Beginning (Canceled)
Quest for Enlightenment is an epic saga telling the evolution of Koiné, inhabited by 5 sentient breeds. This is Chapter I.
About Quest for Enlightenment
Quest for Enlightenment I: The Beginning is an adventure / RPG hybrid. Like in many adventure games, you will have a main goal, and must use your wit, cunning and creativity, plus a generous inventory to puzzle your way through.
Like in many role-playing games, you can customize your character by selecting from any of five different breeds, which will have a common set of attributes, plus different skills according to breed, and must train yourself in combat or other skills to stand a chance against the fierce monsters and intricate conflicts in your way. The game is inspired in the Sierra Online classics and strives to have the same high quality of art, music, and plot. With multiple character breeds and several solutions to many puzzles, the game has excellent re-playability.
The Story So Far
Koiné is a big world, which has been evolving for the past 10,000 years, where five different sentient breeds (or races) live:
- The Strong Folk
- The Thinkers
- The Aware
- The Eternals
- The Luminescent
Each breed speaks their own language. The Thinkers’ language has been considered deprecated for a long time now, and it’s only used for recording things in written form, as they communicate exclusively with their minds. The Luminescent don’t have a language… just yet. Each race is facing very hard challenges, as they are not leveraging their strengths nor overcoming their weaknesses, and they form small groups all over the Inhabited Lands.
There is a young Eternal, Jantl, who has the vision of unifying all breeds, and stopping the current struggle Koiné is suffering, as two races (the Aware and the Eternal) have competed for centuries for territory and survival, which is extenuating certain resources. Furthermore, an uncontrolled growth has been drying out the once fertile soils, turning them into a Desert, which is “eating on” the fertile lands faster every passing year. And, to make things worse, other conflicts are about to start soon between the Strong Folk and the Thinkers, and between the Thinkers and the Eternals… The noble race of Thinkers won’t stand a chance.
Jantl thinks solving this is the most important quest for achieving the enlightenment of her beloved Koiné. Jantl has devised a new, simpler language, and she has a big dream:
1. She wants to spread this new, simpler language so all breeds can stop fighting each other because of miscommunication, and make it eventually become the common language for all Koiné inhabitants.
2. She wants to improve the trading activities by defining a common currency that will guarantee fairer commerce.
3. She wants to establish new, efficient and profitable trading routes so all breeds in the Inhabited Lands can share with each other their goods, resources, and cultural richness.
4. She wants to establish a Big City in the geographic center of Koiné, where all breeds can coexist peacefully and thrive, with an intelligent and well-planned use of the soil and the trading routes, so this beautiful world can exist many millennia more.
5. And, ultimately, she wants to unify all breeds to help reforest the dead lands and make the Desert recede.
She calls this vision: The Unification.
You are a member of one of the five breeds and you just happened to meet Jantl, and she shared her vision of Unification with you. Will you help Jantl achieve her dream? Since you belong to one of the five breeds, you will face unique challenges and extreme situations (that range from very dangerous to very hilarious) on this Quest for Enlightenment.
The Breeds (or Races)
The Strong Folk
A race of hard-working people, not very tall, stocky and with very hard bones, their skin color covers all hues of ochre, from very pale to very dark. Their average life expectation is around 90 years. Their main attribute is their brute force, which helps them solve problems in a direct manner. Their social groups are called tribes.
A race of telepaths, not very tall, with huge heads and no ears (just small orifices on each side of their heads), not used to communicating using spoken language, but with images, ideas and emotions, instead. Their skin color covers all hues of green, from very pale to very dark. Their average life expectation is around 300 years. They share a mental collective, called the Hive Mind, which allows them access to any knowledge other Thinkers have. Their main attribute is their telepathy, which helps them solve problems in a discrete manner. Their social groups are called colonies.
A race of reality-changing people, very tall and thin, with the ability to use their minds to manipulate the elements to change reality at their will. Their skin color covers all hues of gray, from very pale to very dark. Their average life expectation is around 2,000 years. Their main attribute is their magic, which helps them solve problems in a creative manner. Their social groups are called ghettos.
A race of long-living, smooth-talking people, tall and gallant, swift and acrobatic, with slightly pointed ears, and eidetic memory, which allows them to remember everything as if it had just happened. They never get old, need little rest, and they heal very quickly. They’re not invulnerable, though. Their skin color covers all hues of blue or violet, from very pale to very dark. The oldest eternal known is about 5,000 years old, and there are no documented deaths of Eternals due to natural causes, thus their name. Their main attribute is their persuasion, which helps them solve problems in an indirect manner. Their social groups are called congregations.
A race of pure-energy beings, with a shape resembling their former humanoid past, who can manipulate light and electricity, and bend time at their will. They can travel very fast and hide within sunlight. The sun and the electric charge of clouds are their source of energy and they can mirror the shape of other beings by creating a holographic body of light. They are the oldest of all beings who inhabit Koiné. They are very curious, and they communicate by contact, transmitting images, ideas and emotions. They can get easily “polluted” by the energy of the physical beings, becoming attached to them, so they prefer to stay apart from the physical-being affairs. Their main attribute is their relativity, which helps them solve problems in an iterative manner. Their social groups are called gatherings.
Risks and challenges
I'm not gonna lie to you: this is my first video game ever. I waited almost 30 years before having the possibility of being able to fulfill a lifetime dream of designing and developing a video game, and I am doing this with so much love and good energy, that the Universe is gathering the right people to do this a master piece of art you and your friends may play from beginning to end at least five times feeling it is a completely different game. For example, you'll discover all what was useful as a Strong Folk is useless as a Thinker, and every breed will have its own Game Start Sequence, so you'll need to learn to "be in the shoes" of every breed to be able to solve the quests. Plus, a lot of breed-oriented side quests will make the game a much richer experience and will add hundreds of hours of additional fun.
As a curious fact, I wrote a novel, never published, which was used completely to develop this game concept. This means the game story is sound and extremely detailed and well-thought, which will make playing the game a wonderful experience.
A lot of the game elements are still in a stage of concept, and are subject to definition. All the Gold and Platinum backers will have the opportunity to give valuable suggestions that may significantly improve the final gaming experience for everybody. Plus, for Silver, Gold and Platinum backers, there will be a chance to even record your own voice as one of the characters in the game, so you would be able to brag about it with your friends!
That being said, this is a very complex game and our focus is a very high quality result, not an exact estimated deadline. There may be small delays releasing the final version of the game to the Steam platform once the release date is announced. There may be minor changes made to the game's initial concept and its elements during the last stages of development.
We understand that your circumstances might change. We will offer a no-questions-asked refund of all funds, minus any charges to us, ending when we commit to a release date, approximately 3 months after the campaign closes.
We will inform backers of all progress and changes via KS Updates, as soon as we have reliable information. Plus, any backers of the Brass, Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers will be granted access to Behind the Scenes Info, which will give them enough knowledge about the game development advance, so it will be a transparent process all the time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
