Come fly with Leonardo in a whole new way!
Building on the success of our first Kickstarter picture book Sleep, Acroterion Books presents our plan for Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine! To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the life and creative accomplishments of this great Renaissance master, artist Anne Horjus has created a series of wondrous oil paintings to tell the visual story of the libretto written by Charles Anthony Silvestri for the choral masterpiece of the same name by composer Eric Whitacre. Choirs and audiences all over the world have thrilled to the soaring and ethereal harmonies of Whitacre's setting, and now you can experience Leonardo's daring leap in a whole new way!
Here is one of the many fine performances of Whitacre's Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine, by the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and conducted by Eric Whitacre himself.
Anne's paintings for the book are based on many original works by Leonardo, adapted to fit the story of the text. His illustrations all fit together in an ingenious series of interlocking compositional layers, worthy of Leonardo's cleverness, with each painting flowing seamlessly into the next, sharing a compositional structure all based on the face of Leonardo as he dreams of flight.
We have added new text as well, introducing you to Leonardo himself, his life and work, his methods and techniques, and his musings on the future of flight. Your amazing stretch goal support for our Sleep project enabled Anne to create these remarkable paintings.
Now with your help we can raise the funds necessary to print Leonardo Dreams Of His Flying Machine with the same quality and care, and share it with the world!
With your support as a generous backer of this campaign you will enable us to print Leonardo at Worzalla Press in Wisconsin, just as we did Sleep, so the same deluxe quality, feel, and weight that folks have loved about Sleep will be duplicated with this book. Your support also enables us to create a full print run of 3000 books, so that Leonardo can take his place alongside his sister, Sleep, at bookstores and on Amazon for years to come.
Like Sleep, Leonardo Dreams Of His Flying Machine combines a well-known choral work with a picture book, enabling interdisciplinary learning in Music, Language Arts, and History classrooms. But we suspect that our most enthusiastic backers will be choir geeks like ourselves! If you have sung Leonardo, let us know!
We thank you for your consideration, and for your backing yet another exciting project! We look forward to rewarding you for your support, and we won't let you down!

Risks and challenges
Regarding risks and challenges, we take our inspiration from Leonardo himself! He had a powerful dream, and he worked tirelessly to make it come true. And while we fly routinely now, he only achieved flight in his imagination. The challenges in creating a beautiful picture book are many, but we have been through this process before with SLEEP, and we can better anticipate the hidden costs, and possible delays in production and shipping. So, we predict smooth sailing! Potential snags include printing delays, shipping supply issues, and trying to get all the rewards fulfilled before the academic semester gets too busy! We will not be relying on a quartermaster service to help us fulfill the rewards, so October is going to be super busy for both of us--but it was fun last time and we are looking forward to it again!
Another issue that vexes us is the astronomical cost of overseas shipping. We debated whether to even offer the book to backers outside the US, but decided that if someone wanted it badly enough, we would offer it! We had several dozen backers overseas for SLEEP, and so we anticipate that some will return for this book. So, non-US backers will see the cost of shipping estimated for each reward level. Hopefully we will not have to adjust those amounts later. We will update you if that is necessary.
Finally, we will be sending out regular updates to inform you all of our progress, and any snags along the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
