Update

With the campaign nearly over, it seems we'll fall short of our funding goal.  Because we ♥ this little device so much, and we keep finding different use cases for it, we'll still be making them available to you regardless.   To do so, we'll be starting to distribute them through our online store, so keep a look out for pre-order information at:

As for the other aspects described in this campaign, we're a couple of months from having a polished iOS App.  We're developing detailed documentation for using it in our Instructables page (http://www.instructables.com/member/acrobotic/).  And, our first version of the hardware has been prototyped and will be demoed in our next update.

What it is. 

The Pulsar is a wearable electronic device that allows you to wirelessly control bright, colorful LEDs from any computer or mobile!

It includes a rechargeable, long-lasting, pocket-sized battery, a tiny microcontroller with Bluetooth LE, a real-time clock, and 24 smart, multi-colored (RGB) LEDs.

What we've used it for.

To be honest, we didn't design the Pulsar with a specific use in mind.  We simply wanted a way to include multi-colored lights in our projects without too much hassle, and be able to control them wirelessly.

To give you a taste for what we've built so far, here are a few examples:

  • Simple Costume Designs

From Comic-Con to Maker Faire, the Pulsar allows us to build costumes of varying degrees of complexity. An Iron Man t-shirt works great when you're in a pinch for a costume party!

The Pulsar also makes a great addition to our 3d-printed repulsor arm! Check out the CAD model files courtesy of our friends at Deezmaker 3D-Printers!

  • International Space Station (ISS) Monitor

In collaboration with the creator of ISS Above, we developed custom firmware so that the Pulsar would display a countdown until the next pass of the ISS using beautiful LED animations! The data are loaded wirelessly onto the Pulsar from a Raspberry Pi equipped with a USB Bluetooth LED adapter!

  •  3D-Printed Night Lamp

In collaboration with the awesome engineers at Deezmaker 3D-Printers we developed a 3d-printed night lamp that can be programmed as a soundless alarm clock from any bluetooth-capable device!

We're big advocates of the Open-Source movement. We stood on the shoulders of giants we've been able to achieve our goals without having to re-invent the wheel at each turn. Our LED libraries build on prior work by:

Who we are.

ACROBOTIC is an Open-Source electronics startup in Pasadena dedicated to designing fun and easy-to-use hardware and software for education, DIY, hobby, arts, science, and more! 

Our team members have been involved in a few successful crowdfunding campaigns both as developers and collaborators:

 We've been working Bluetooth-Controlled LEDs for a couple of years, and we've demoed them at several venues like Maker Faire and Silicon Beach Fest!

The Pulsar is our latest creation and we're excited to share with all of you.  We started working on a wearable version of our BLE-controlled LEDs for The ISS Above HD+ project.

As a small, bootstrapped company, it is very helpful to purchase the components in bulk. For this reason, we turn to crowdfunding in order to easily and efficiently organize our pre-order process.

Risks and challenges

ACROBOTIC is a professional Maker business dedicated to the design and manufacture of fun and easy-to-use electronics. As part of our daily operations, we have to deal with the intricacies of manufacturing electronic hardware.

We turn to Kickstarter because it represents an easy and efficient way to process the pre-orders for our products. Having been involved in a few crowdfunding campaigns, we understand the expectations of our backers and we're committed to provide unparalleled service. Based on our experience, we are proactively addressing:

Risk #1: lead time and delays of hardware components.

As part of our daily operations we maintain a global inventory (updated daily) of the parts needed for the production of our Pulsar boards and Kits. Our main concern is to be able to fulfill the orders we take during the campaign, thus we have limited the number of rewards we offer. We have also set realistic timelines for delivery based on an already completed pre-production run.

Risk #2: problems with the assembly of the hardware.

With a couple of lessons learned from prior campaigns, we now feel more than confident on meeting the expectations of a larger audience. We are confident that we can fulfill the campaign directly from our offices in Pasadena. However, in the off chance the campaign is a runaway success, we already have a fulfillment center on stand-by for outsourcing the most time-consuming step of the fulfillment process.

Risk #3: not reaching our financial goal.

This is a challenge inherent to the crowdfunding process. The products are already designed and we're using Kickstarter for handling pre-orders. Whether or not the campaign succeeds (fingers crossed so it does), we will add them to our online catalog when the campaign ends!
