What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. What is Otto up to?

Who is Otto?

Otto is an Open-Source, Arduino-compatible, 3D-printable two-legged robot.  It can be programmed from any computer to walk, dance, sing, and avoid obstacles.

All the parts for building Otto are included in the kit, assembling them is easy and typically takes around two hours!

What makes Otto special? 

Otto provides a perfect opportunity to build your very first robot, and it makes the process of learning about robotics easy, interactive, and FUN!

Otto is more than a simple machine, it establishes an emotional connection with users and audiences, allowing everyone to interact socially!

Otto is a great tool for the classroom that can be used to teach children and adults alike about the wonders of robotics with ease!

Otto follows a line of microcontroller-powered, do-it-yourself, bipedal robots. Thanks to the Open-Source nature of these projects, each generation is able to build upon its predecessors! The Otto project is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC-BY-SA):

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial purposes, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms.

What can Otto do?

Once assembled, Otto can be easily programmed over USB to perform several different behaviors.

Depending on the prescribed movement of its servos, Otto can move around in very distinct ways.

Otto's internal buzzer allows him to communicate with the external world.

Otto can interact with its surroundings autonomously by programming it to use its built-in sensor.

Ottos's body can be 3d-printed in almost any 3d printer.  You can create your own Otto using your favorite color filaments!

Using the project's Arduino software libraries, you can easily program Otto to perform a wide variety of motions.

You can expand Otto's movements and other behaviors by creating your own unique ones!

Otto's design files are readily available, so adding functionality is extremely easy.  The project is released under Open-Source licenses allowing it to be modified to your heart's content!

Otto's default behaviors can be combined to produce unique and fun interactions with its user(s) and surroundings.  Its design can be remixed and customize to make it your own!

How do I use Otto?

Getting started with Otto is super easy using detailed instructions in a variety of formats, from printed media to online videos.

 

Whereas the Otto team provides help for resolving technical issues, the biggest source of support for this project is a strong community on several different online platforms such as Hackaday, Hackster, Thingiverse, Instructables, and Arduino's Project Hub!

 

In addition, as an Open-Source project, all the design files are available on Github for you to use (just don't forget to respect the project's CC-BY-SA license)!

Who is Otto for?

The creators of Otto have made a concerted effort to make the project as fun and easy-to-use as possible. The intended audience for Otto is anyone with a desire to explore the wonderful world of electronics, regardless of background or skill level.

Following the recognition of STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) as being of paramount importance for future generations, Otto is also intended to blur the lines between playing and learning, making programming an enjoyable experience for the younger members of the audience!

The Otto team wants to make programmable electronics accessible to anyone.  Through various collaboration efforts with non-profits and local academic institutions, the Otto kits are finding their way into the classrooms!

What are the campaign rewards?

We are running this Kickstarter campaign to order components in bulk and reduce manufacturing costs! We have packaged different Otto kits to meet customers' needs.

When will Otto be ready?

Given that the project has been demoed at several events in the past year, we have a great handle on the manufacturing, shipping, and handling process. 

The different components for Otto have been carefully selected to avoid any delays due to shortages or part revisions!

How does Otto work?

  • Next, Otto can be connected to a computer's USB port to load it's program code onto the microcontroller using the Arduino IDE:

  • Lastly, Otto can be disconnected from USB and switched over to battery power to let him dance around without restrictions!

Who created Otto?

Otto is the brainchild of Camilo Parra Palacio's team working out of Shenzen, China.  ACROBOTIC has teamed up with the Otto developers in order to take the project from its development stage into production!

ACROBOTIC is an Open-Source electronics startup in Pasadena dedicated to designing fun and easy-to-use hardware and software for education, DIY, hobby, arts, science, and more!

Risks and challenges

ACROBOTIC is a professional Maker business dedicated to the design and manufacture of fun and easy-to-use electronics. As part of our daily operations, we have to deal with the intricacies of manufacturing electronic hardware.

We turn to Kickstarter because it represents an easy and efficient way to process the pre-orders for our products. Having been involved in a few crowdfunding campaigns, we understand the expectations of our backers and we're committed to provide unparalleled service. Based on our experience, we are proactively addressing:

Risk #1: lead time and delays of hardware components.

As part of our daily operations we maintain a global inventory (updated daily) of the parts needed for the production of Otto. Our main concern is to be able to fulfill the orders we take during the campaign, thus we have limited the number of rewards we offer. We have also set realistic timelines for delivery based on an already completed pre-production run.

Risk #2: problems with the assembly of the hardware.

With a couple of lessons learned from prior campaigns, we now feel more than confident on meeting the expectations of a larger audience. We are confident that we can fulfill the campaign directly from our offices in Pasadena. However, in the off chance the campaign is a runaway success, we already have a fulfillment center on stand-by for outsourcing the most time-consuming step of the fulfillment process.

Risk #3: not reaching our financial goal.

This is a challenge inherent to the crowdfunding process. The products are already designed and we're using Kickstarter for handling pre-orders. Whether or not the campaign succeeds (fingers crossed so it does), we will add them to our online catalog when the campaign ends!
