About this project
Chernobyl : 30 years of abandonment
£6,801
239
In May 2016 I traveled to Chernobyl to photograph what has happened to the area in the past 30 years and how nature is reclaiming the land and the dilapidated buildings in the area . Even though the land is still contaminated, nature is thriving in this environment where very few humans choose to live now. I have visited many abandoned places throughout Europe in my younger years as an urban explorer but I have never seen anything quite like Chernobyl and Pripyat. Nature is reclaiming this area which once had a population of roughly 49,000 before being evacuated in the days following the nuclear disaster in April 1986.
This is the first stop for a larger long term project I am going to be undertaking. Any profit from this will be going into the travel expenses ( and trust me its going to be expensive) to get to the other areas that I have planned to document.
Photo Book Details
It will be 21cm x 21cm in size and will have around 60 pages. This may increase if there is a great amount of interest in this photo book. The inner pages will be 170gsm in thickness. The cover will be paper back, 350gsm uncoated with a matte laminate and will be PUR perfect bound. It will be from the same printing company where I have had my previous successful kickstarters produced so people who have got something from me already know of the standard of quality it will be.
This will be a small run print of however many people back the book and also a small amount for sale on my website afterwards.
Polaroids
Polaroid style prints as part of the rewards for people who love this style of photograph
*Digital Print
The Road To Chernobyl print is available as a reward. The size will be - A4 (11.7" x8.3") and will be printed on Fuji DP-II Lustre paper, using a high quality photographic printers that I have used for years.
* I have decided to bump the size up to A3 for all rewards that include this.
Film Print
I am skilled in the dying art of film photography, developing and printing from film and I will be hand printing the image below which I took on the LC-W Lomography Camera. I like to create a vintage style look to my film prints.
It will be printed on Fomabrom Matte paper and will be of archival quality as I will be using a selenium toner to do this. There will be a small amount of these available as they take a lot of time and effort to produce each print and I do not want to make any mistakes due to rushing the process to get them out in the time needed.
Art Screen Print
As well as photography I do like to dabble in other forms of art and will be doing a small number of screen print/photography/art pieces. They consist of foam board base, with authentic vintage Ukrainian newspaper/electrical/scientific magazines ( ranging from the late 80's to the mid 90's) with a screen print overlay.
Each piece will look slightly different due to the pages used and the screen printing technique (I am not a master of hand screen printing so each one will look slightly different) , so you will be getting a unique piece of art. Approximate size is 28cm x 38cm (11 x 15 inch).
Each piece will also be framed (without glass) with a minimalist thin black frame to compliment the screen print.
Below is a simple run down of the costs involved in the travel and creation of this photo book. My main aim is to try and make some money back, enough to cover the costs of travel, and to also have a few photo books left over to sell on my website. If it goes extremely well, any extra money will be used to help fund trips to other places which are classed in this genre of tourism to add to this evolving project.
Risks and challenges
There are very few risks involved in this. The only ones I can think of are stuff like :
if my computer explodes...
postal strikes...
end of the world....
stuff like that really which are unlikely to happen.
I have already been to Chernobyl and got the images I need as you can see from the above description and photographs.
I will be using the same printing company for this book as I have for my two previous successful kickstarter campaigns so I know the quality produced is high.
