Creating sustainable income for farmers on Kea from acorn caps and teaching the world that acorns are the new SUPERFOOD!
TO WATCH THE VIDEO WITH GREEK SUBTITLES:
This project is a success!!! With the money we've raised here we will give the island a large hammer mill to crush acorn caps to powder to increase the profit they make from the acorn cap harvest. This mill will also be used to produce animal feed from free & abundant acorns. We will build an enormous solar powered de-hydrator for processing acorns.
We've already begun making history on Kea and with your help there is so much more we can do...
Marcie speaking at TEDxThessaloniki May 2012 about sustainable income provided by acorns and acorn caps in the midst of the Greek crisis. If you are not familiar with the TED speakers platform I invite you to check out www.ted.com and www.tedxthessaloniki.com
Anyone who backs our project with a pledge of $15 (€11) or more will receive an Acorn Charm - a tiny token of our gratitude!
Can you help by purchasing a bag of Acorn Cookies? You'll be helping us make history on Kea and you'll also help us show the world what amazing things can be accomplished when people decide to make a difference, you'll be making SO many people smile!
Here is what we've accomplished so far:
12 tons (26,400 lbs) acorn caps shipped to a German tannery March 2012. Twenty farming families supplement their income from the ancient Oak forest for the first time since 1965 by collecting caps.
1500 kilos (3300 lbs) of acorns collected & processed into gluten-free Acorn Flour. Baking experiments continue with excellent results and the Acorn Cookies continue to sell out.
2013 orders for 24 tons (52,800 lbs) of acorn caps to European tanneries. We continue to collect new orders knowing our farmers can fill ANY demand.
Successful Kickstarter project in 2011 raised $10,777 (€8,200) and makes it possible for us to offer our island the giant Acorn Huller, custom made in Turkey. This machine makes it possible now for farmers to feed acorns to livestock without the harmful shells which have prohibited then from utilizing this free and nutritious feed source.
Hosted 12 volunteers (acorn interns) for the acorn harvest of 2011.
Made the cover of Kappa Magazine (Kathimerini) in November 2011 and this article was chosen as one of the top 100 Kappa articles in the year-end issue. Follow the link below to read the article.
Here is what we need to do now:
Build a solar Dehydrator that will make it possible to significantly increase acorn flour production AND make it possible for us to produce all organic dried fruit and veggie chips when the acorn season is finished - another way to help farmers use local produce.
Continue searching for & securing more large orders for Hamada, acorn caps. We already have orders for 24 tons next year!
Continue giving free seminars and speeches about Oak & acorn opportunities for creating new sustainable income. Syros speach from 22/6/2012 will be published here soon.
Host a large group of volunteers in October & November 2012 for the acorn and Hamada harvest.
You can help us make this happen! Really, you can! Just push the GREEN pledge button up over there on the right!

An idea turns into reality when people who take interest make pledges in exchange for rewards created by or for the project. A way to "kickstart" creative thinking into real jobs and innovative products. http://www.kickstarter.com/help/faq/kickstarter%20basics
